From Oregon Chai

Two words: instant gratification. These portable mixes are pure (and simple) pleasure when you’re on the go. Slip a packet in your pocket or purse. Or stash a canister in a desk drawer.
It’s so easy.

To brew, just pour the contents of a single packet into your mug and add hot water. Another option? Customize. Mix a couple (more or less) tablespoons from the canister with hot water. Feel free to add a little milk or soy if you’re in the mood for a creamier experience, or add ice if you like your chai cold.

Ingredients: Sugar, dried whole milk, dried nonfat milk, dried honey, tapioca maltodextrin, natural flavors, dried black tea, salt.

Made a chai latte with this chai concentrate for the first time last night.
Meh.
It was good. Better than I presumed it would be. But… I’ve had better.
I’ve had much better.
Quite sweet. Rather mellow for my taste in Chai. And, I knew something was wrong right away when I saw how watery it was, as it poured out of the box.

Cofftea

Concentrate… ick.

Fred

Yeah, I agree with Cofftea, ick. I have had both this and the green tea latte from this company and they are really lacking in depth and flavor. I guess that is just what you get for trying something that is meant to be convenient.

Cofftea

Why use a concentrate when you can use the real things? Baristas always look at me strange when I order my dirty chai lattes and dirty chai mochas and caramel mochas w/ bags.

Fred

I find that although i do love a good chai tea, I admire the simplicity and complexity of a good pan fired chinese green tea over something such as chai with all of those ingredients anyday. It just seems to me sometimes that a lot of the ingredients in a chai are just used to mask or make up for inferior black tea often used in the formula.

Fred

my comment should say chinese black tea not green tea. sorry.

Cofftea

@Fred that’s why I buy chai spice mix (sans tea) and add it to my favorite tea- black, green, oolong, yellow, white. It’s REALLY good w/ Adagio’s chocolate chip or Botanical Indulgence’s Caramel Creme Oolong.

Oh Cha!

@Cofftea – I like your last post! That sounds like a great thing to try!

And… concentrates do not HAVE to be bad. Many of them just… are. :(

I’M ON THE HUNT FOR A GOOD ONE! I will never prioritise chai over my other teas, but, a good chai latte has it’s place in the world! And chai concentrate can be important to certain recipes… (mmmmm… chai ice cream.)

Cofftea

For chai ice cream why not steep real chai in milk then cool?

Oh Cha!

I’m already flavouring my own ice cream! ;)
Yes, you’re right. :)

Shanti

If you’re still looking for a good concentrate, have you tried Tazo yet? I haven’t had it in years, but I remember it being infinitely better than this sugar cane mess.

Cofftea

Wait… is this a mix or a concentrate?

Shanti

Sorry, I meant concentrate. :)

Cofftea

But the name says mix…

Shanti

I know, but it’s a liquid concentrate.

Cofftea

Sigh Misrepresentation again.

Since I’m in a hotel, I can’t prepare chai the traditional way (no stovetop). A friend suggested that I try this as an alternative.

It was okay, not spectacular (didn’t compare at all with making chai with actual tea leaves and spices!).

I had a migraine, so I “got” to taste it again an hour later. Now I can’t stand to look at it. I don’t want to rate it because of that. I’ll try again in a few days.

Cofftea

Have you tried Trader Joe’s version? YUM! I’ll take a mix over a concentrate any day although this is good. My favorite cafe/ice cream shop uses it.

denisend

No. The only reason I was trying a concentrate is that I don’t have a stovetop in the hotel room. The town I"m in right now is pretty much the middle of no where – there’s no Trader Joes. I’m pretty much limited to what’s at Walmart.

I bought another chai mix – a powder…Pacific Chai. We’ll see how that goes.

Cofftea

Yeah a powder is what I mean when I say mix. I’m 2 hrs from a Trader Joe’s on a daily basis myself so I drink Pacific’s version when I’m too lazy to make my own. The texture is different from the stove top version but I find the flavor just as good.

LENA

poor denisend…your quest for a good chai while traveling is not going well. i’ve had this one before (in the powder form) and it was SUPER sweet…not great by any means but not god awful.

Shanti

Hope you’re feeling better…
I thought this concentrate was pretty good mixed with the Tazo chai concentrate…the Tazo is more “chai” like and balances out the cane sugar taste of the Oregon chai.

denisend

Shanti – interesting idea, but I didn’t find the Tazo chai at the store. Oh well.
Lena – yeah, the last one (I’m about to log) is a little better.

I ♥ NewYorkCiTEA

Hope you feel better today, denisend.

Cofftea

denisend, are you near a walmart? My walmart has tazo. A Starbucks store might also have it.

At our conference last week, one of the vendors was giving away samples of this at her booth. She gave me a handful to try.

Oh. My. God. It’s sweet. Jaw-locking sweet. Painfully sweet. The taste itself is actually not too bad once you get past the sweet (okay, the aftertaste isn’t too bad), but it’s way, way too sweet for me.

I’ve got two more samples of this…who wants them?

Cofftea

You have been so generous to me… if no one else claims them I will save them from the trash.

Jaime

I’m going to try to get your package out Monday or Tuesday. If nobody else wants them by then, I’ll tuck these into it!

Meghann M

I used to love these, but have stayed away for sugar for so long, I’m sure I would have a very similar reaction to you. This is what a coffee shop I worked at served as their chai, the liquid concentrate though.

Cofftea

Meghann, I agree I kinda get burned on things I used to like if I don’t have them enough- it’s really sad. Although I normally have very good luck w/ powdered chais (I can’t stand liquid concentrate though)- they’re a different beverage than loose or bagged chais, but good none the less.

Meh, on the borderline of yucky. This is almost too sweet (and I like my sugar with tea and cream). Hardly any spices. Actually, this tastes like sugar cane flavored milk with a hint of tea and honey. Yuck. While I was pouring the mix into my cup, it smelled like Arizona sweetened Iced Tea….:O
I haven’t had it in a few years, but I remember the Tazo chai mix being much, much better than this.

Cofftea

Tazo has a mix? I thought it was just the concentrate or bags? Last time I was on vacation I went to this ice cream/coffee shop and got a 12oz double shot dirty ice cream chai latte… basically a dirty chai poured over a scoop of ice cream in the bottom of the cup. Absofreakinlutely amazing!!!

Shanti

That sounds soooo good. And yes, I meant concentrate, again. :)

Cofftea

IT WAS!!!

Received a free sample of this in the mail. My husband chortles and shakes his head each time he sees a catalog or free sample in the mail. I’ll admit the combos of Rishi Tea, Women’s Health, and the latest in concealment holsters and Kevlar isn’t your everyday mix.

Anyway, I didn’t hate this as much as I thought I was going to. It is pretty sickenly sweet and I had to constantly stir my cup due the mix settling between each sip. I smell the spices more than I taste them. I’d much rather make my own chai (but it is time consuming to do it properly). Right now Adagio’s Thai Chai reigns supreme in my book. This isn’t bad if you are seriously craving some chai.

Cofftea

How did you get a free sample? I LOVE chai mix! I make my own, but this would be good to have when I’m out and too lazy to make more cuz I want some NOW.

LENA

I just checked their website and they have ended their promotion with the free sample. Sorry!

Tall double dirty chai latte on Monday morning for breakfast at a cafe in Seattle who’s proceeds go to support New Horizons Ministry. Not the slightest sickeningly sweet. Delicious actually.

made as directed with 8oz water and a (generous) splash of milk. Added chocolate flavored marshmallows because I’m trying to get rid of them.

It’s ok, for a powder, I guess… it’s not my ideal chai because a) powdered mix = flat taste b) too much cinnamon and not enough vanilla. It was a free sample, and worth every penny. Will drink but won’t buy.

Boiling 0 min, 30 sec

I’ve had had good luck w/ mixes if they’re made entirely w/ milk or black coffee. Cutting the liquid volume down to 6oz also helps. My favorite coffee/ice cream shop uses this one and I always get it w/ 2 espresso shots (for a 12oz) and a scoop of ice cream in the bottom. YUM! Don’t get me wrong, I love my loose leaf chai, but sometimes I want something w/ a bit thicker/richer texture.

I had this without any milk and I had to make it strong because the water ran out of the kettle and I only got half a cup. Wow, this tea packs more of a sweet, sweet punch than I remember. I actually don’t really like it that much any more. I’ve had better by just making my own chai strong and adding milk and honey. It isn’t terrible. I’ve just had better now.

Since it’s the original I will let it slide but since Chai (even powder chai) has come a long way now in the states they need to improve or evolve. Other that it’s “OK”. Had HOT. It was a FREE Sample – eventho – I have had it before – it serves a purpose, I suppose. I just don’t like the aftertaste.

Jillian

They dump too much sugar in it too.

Hyrulehippie

What kind of aftertaste does it have? It it chemically, fakeness or is it something else?
