I grabbed lunch at a cafe before rushing to work and decided I needed tea. I tried this, since I like the rooibos chai. Won’t be ordering it again. It was pretty bland except at the end of the cup for some reason, and the anise totally put me off. Disclaimer: I hate anise in the best of cases.

I rarely purchase grocery store teas, but I was craving chai, had heard Numi was a good brand, and the box does say “full leaf tea”. After getting it home I just cut open a bag and put it in the teapot. That’s when I discovered that it doesn’t look like full leaf at all; it appears to be ground and twiggy. Well, I decided to try it anyway, just in case it was better than it looks. Cinnamon overwhelmed all the other spices and the tea was just weak. Not much more to say; I just really didn’t like it and was upset over what I feel was the false claim that it’s a loose leaf tea.

Nicely balanced blend of masala. Robust anise/cinnamon aroma with a nice cardamon taste. Hue was an orange red.
A little aside:
I decided to drink this for lunch, not having eaten anything since 6 a.m., after the second sip I got the jitters.

Another dip into the sample box, and we have a winner! I am a Chai nut, especially when the spices walk up to you and kick you square in the face! Very cinnamonny (if that’s even a word). I gave it my standard Chai preparation (milk and sweetener), and found it to be in very close competition with with my favorite Ultimate Spice Chai from Twinings.

Side note: I love reading the directions on the sac these Numi tea bags are wrapped in. This one said “While you dance with a loved one, steep this tea for 3-5 minutes.” Also, being very silly people, my sister and I literally danced for the 5 minutes I steeped this tea for. Heck! I should buy a box just for the calories we’ll burn while the tea is brewing!

I keep steeping this too long to get more spiciness and end up instead with bitter Assam and a few bits of cardamom. The anise ruins it for me — I strongly dislike anise. Otherwise a bland chai. Expensive. Not sure this one is worth the retail price, though other Numi Teas definitely are.

I liked this, but it wasn’t as strong as I’d like. I usually drink chai when I want the strongest flavor I can get out of a tea. (And I usually leave a tea bag in until I’ve completely finished drinking.) And I also think there is something going on with me and ginger. I do not dislike ginger but I have a suspicion I’m not exactly allergic but it isn’t good for me to be eating it.

Sad day, I love ginger!

I agree with all the other posters. This tea definitely has a subtle blend of spices (I feel that the cardamom is most prevalent) that is smooth on the palette. I prefer my chai much stronger, and if milk and sugar are added to this (I drank it without) i fear that the subtlety of the flavors will disappear. Nice blend, good for those who don’t usually drink chai.

So, since early spring 2020, I have been the only person consistently in the office. Which means I can spend days, sometimes even weeks, pretty much alone. As an introvert, this isn’t much of a problem other than I start to develop some very bad habits, such as cooking steaks in the breakroom’s toaster oven.

As I was dealing with the most recent crisis of the missing master key, I did a lot of searching in nooks and crannies of the office that I had never bothered to look through before.

(I actually spent a week on this futile task before someone finally approved a locksmith to come out and open the door. At which point I discovered that the missing key was not only inside that room, but it was also inside a locked fire proof safe. And I did not have a key to said safe and the locksmith couldn’t open it. Thus started the new quest to find the key to the safe. Wait a minute, has my life turned into an Adventure game?)

Among the interesting things I found was the cabinent where we keep our overflow of coffee beans and bagged teas that I usually ignore. But I was bored and frustrated and annoyed, so I just started looking through the offerings and there wasn’t much of a surprise in what I found. Primarily mint or green jasmine, a few other tisanes that I have no interest in. Mostly the usual office crap purchased from an offcie supply store by people who don’t actually drink tea but think they need to try to be inclusive to the tiny portion of weirdos who don’t worship at the shrine of the coffee bean.

And then I ran across a box of this in the back corner. I almost ignored it. While I love almost all of the usual masala chai ingredients, I really do not like clove. And most masala chai style teas contain massive amounts of clove. Blech. But, I was bored and frustrated and decided I would rather look at bagged teas over searching for a key that I suspected was inside the locked room.

And, much to my surprise, NO CLOVE!!!!!!!!
So today I decided to give it a try. (Man, what is it with me and long stories lately.)

And I can taste and smell cinnamon and cardomon and ginger. Not sure on the anise. I expected it to be stronger, but I don’t necessarily find that a bad thing. And there’s no clove! (Queue hysterical laughter)

The down side is that the spices really over power the base tea. I wish it stood out a little more, but its not a major deal breaker. And hey, it looks like you can buy this in loose leaf in units of, holy moly, one pound! I could drink nothing but this for a year and still not be able to go through an entire pound of it.

I can stick with bags. I don’t see this as a staple so much as something I will be drawn to when the rains come and the winds are wet and cold. Oh man I am so ready for the rains to come back. Seattle shouldn’t be as dry as a tender box.

Oh, and I stole the box of tea and put it into my desk drawer with all of my other teas. :D

I have one tea bag of this from many years ago. I’m good at finishing loose leaf in a reasonable amount of time, but sadly, my tea bags suffer some neglect. The main flavor here seems to be the anise, which, of course, I’m into. However, this is yet another blend that I would not call chai. It’s a pleasant licorice tea, but I’m missing the spice almost entirely. I don’t buy chai anymore because they all seem to be too heavy on one flavor, whether that’s clove, cinnamon, or licorice. It’s hard to find one that’s balanced.
