I’m enjoying this. The chocolate has a deep, dark chocolate-y flavor, but, I do notice a slight artificial note to it that seems to be expressed most when I really focus on the flavors. This note doesn’t really detract from the other flavors, though, and the rest of the flavors are very enjoyable, so this is still worth a try, especially for those who enjoy the contrast of a spicy chocolate tea.

What really won me over with this tea is the chili and how it plays out. It starts out very subtle, with just a hint of spiciness … I wouldn’t even call it “spicy” but rather a gentle warmth. But by mid-cup, the heat has developed and there is a warm twinge throughout my mouth, starting from my lips, all the way to the back of my throat. It is that tempting heat that says “take another sip for even more fire” and being someone who loves spicy, I comply!

But it doesn’t ever become such an inferno that I need to rush to the kitchen in search of something to help clear my palate. I like the way the heat lingers. It’s a very enjoyable sensation … at least for those who enjoy spicy!

gmathis

Makes me wonder if I’m intrepid enough to toss in my own dried chilis into some of my scraps of chocolate tea.

LiberTEAS

Hey, try it! If you don’t want to infuse the chili … maybe just put the dried chili in the tea for a couple of weeks, and then retrieve the chili and see how it turns out.

gmathis

There you go … I hadn’t thought about tossing it in dried!

Azzrian

This sounds delicious!

I love the randomizer; this is the tea it spit out on the first try today, and I gladly went to search for it. Definitely chocolate truffle -like, however again, I’m missing anything spicy or chili with this brew. In fact, it tastes remarkably like DAVIDs Chocolate Chili Chai (which happens to be sitting on the other side of my workspace), however I get more cream than anything out of this one, with faint chocolate and vanilla notes.

Thank you Della Terra for offering the 10 dollar Try Me packages! Very nice to get such generous samples and have the variety in trying a company I have never tried before!
This tea could be spicier FOR ME but for frame of reference people I use Insanity Sauce and eat hot peppers like candy! With that said – there IS a light spiciness to this tea and I say that even for those who do not like hot things. My hubby is very sensitive to hot spicy things so I know this is one that anyone could easily enjoy.
The chocolate is pretty good, I am VERY pick with chocolate and its not too fakey tasting but there is a slight after taste of that artificial LIKE flavor you get with some chocolate but trust me it is not NEARLY as bad as it sounds I have had some “chocolate” teas that just make you want to rinse your mouth out! This is NOT one of those!
So with all that said for me to order more of this I would need a bit more KICK from it BUT I am going to enjoy every last drop of what I do have!
Its good – the little bit of heat does sort of sneak up in the end of the sip but it dissipates really quickly too so you don’t have to worry about a spicy after taste lingering around!
Its nice. :)

Sil

Ooh I’m excited for the one now since I don’t like ÜBER spicy.

LiberTEAS

is this the insanity sauce you speak of? http://store.davesgourmet.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=DAIN

I haven’t tried this one, but, my personal favorite hot sauce is Secret Aardvark sauce which is a local fave: http://secretaardvark.com/products.html

I also really have enjoyed this Sultry Sauce: http://hungryinportland.com/2012/07/06/7-sultry-sauce-from-torchbearer-sauces/

Azzrian

Yes yes that is it! I have not tried the other two! I used to so enjoy trying different hot sauces but being the only one in the home who will use them they just go to waste I mean I can only consume so much. Now I keep one bottle around at a time. SIGH

Della Terra Teas

Thanks for the review! After reading and hearing reviews from others that have had our Chili Chocolate Truffle, We have decided to keep the current blend the way it is BUT offer a 3X Hot Chili Chocolate Truffle. It will have a boost of the chili pepper that will not only enhance the pepper flavor, but an added heat that a lot of people are looking for!

Azzrian

Nice!!! :) Thank you!

Scott B

I really like Dave’s Hurtin’ Habanero and it looks like they have some new products I haven’t tried yet.

I have a full shelf in my kitchen of hot sauces. I used to order from Cosmic Chile and others quite a bit. Alas, with reflux issues, I cut way back on the hot sauce when I started getting into tea.

A couple of brands of sauces that are really good (and really cheap) are Bufalo and El Yucateco. Not gourmet stuff, but good quality. Bufalo Red Jalapeno is one of my all-time favorites. They can be found in almost any Mexican grocery store and lots of regular grocery stores (depending on where you live). Sometimes Mexican restaurants offer them as a condiment.

Azzrian

Okay now I want some spicy food :)
Thanks for all the good recommendations!

Still not loving this tea to death…the chocolate is very muted to me, as is the spice. I know they rolled outa spicier blend so I’ll need to give that a try next. That being said, this is a nice tea, but it just doesn’t knock my socks off the way id hoped it would.

Course part of that might just be the no good, very bad day I’m having today. Getting my matcha ready for the morning so I can have a caramel, peach smoothie and tucking myself in to bed for an early night. Things always look better in the morning, and if they don’t it’s always good to have more sleep! :)

Azzrian

Now Now Alexander … :)

Azzrian

I do however hope it gets better!

Azzrian

Oops another post … I need to learn to read the WHOLE thing then reply to ALL of it as opposed to letting each singular thought I have come into type!
SO ANYWAY … caramel peach huh … now that is intriguing!
I need to get some peach matcha!

Sil

That made me smile Azz…thanks :)

As for the caramel peach…it’s brought to you by a. Can. Of. Peaches. I’m not so fancy as the rest of you to be mixing all of them thar matcha flavours together! Lol sorry..getting a little loopy…but yeah I love peaches…and cherries…and well fruit. Fruit is good…caramel and fruit is better….chocolate and coffee and fruit and caramel is wonderful….

This was yummy. At first I really wasn’t sure about this tea, especially from the smell of the dry leaves. It was delicious though. Chocolate is definitely the dominant flavor, and it’s kind of a nice dark chocolate. The chili adds a slightly spicy heat to the background. I really liked it, and the second steep wasn’t bad either! I don’t think I’ll have a problem finishing the bag :)

This was the last new tea I had to try. Hmmmm, what should I do now? ;)

Terri HarpLady

Order more!! :D

Kittenna

Nuts, I should have compared this to DavidsTea’s Chocolate Chili Chai. Will have to fish out my bag of it and give it a shot before winter’s gone!

Tealizzy

Terri – I think I WILL! Not sure what yet. I think I need to try more caffeine-free teas, so I have more options later in the day, but I really love black teas! It’s so hard!

Kittena – I’d love to get your opinion on that! Every time I’ve tried the DavidsTea one, its been in store, and they just don’t steep their teas long enough for my taste.

Another from AZZ’s generosity. Though I saw mixed reviews on this one I still went into it optimisticly, yet this optimism was soon tempered once opening the bag to smell the dry leaf- a strong artificial cinnamon smell that you often find with scented candles. The color of the liqour was a deeper brown and the wet leaf smelled slightly more appealing than it did dry.

First drink I was surprised, intrigued actually. There was a certain degree of complexity right away. The nutty tones mingled nicely with the dark chocolate ones. It’s so nice when flavors can play well together and no ‘time outs’ need to be administered. The slight astringency was easy to overlook when considering all that my mouth had to process. The chili was so faint it was barely detectable, which I was glad since I’ve not had chili in tea yet and didn’t want to be overwhelmed by the spice. The bold black flavor played well in this drink for me too.

My wife loved the tea and stated “this may be my favorite so far”…which she ended up saying three times today in all. To be fair she is even newer than me and so I try to bring her along as much as possible. I must also note that, in general, when I list low to moderate astringency in a tea she tells me she doesn’t find any at all. Again I’m an astringency weenie.

We liked it, my soon to be sixteen year old as well, though the wife liked it most. This tea made it on her "one to buy’ list until, that is, she tried another tea. That is another note altogether isn’t it.

This is a sneaky one!

I eat spicy food like it’s nothing at all. There’s a popcorn place in a shopping center nearby and they have THE BEST hot white cheddar popcorn. It has that heat that will lead to tears if it catches you off guard. I love it so much.

This seems to have the same sort of spice but far, far tamer. Take a sip and you just might get that tingle of spice in your throat instead. It’s not too spicy at all unless you’re trying to get that result.

The only problem is I can’t detect any chocolate notes at all. The black tea has some cocoa notes but it’s not in any way chocolatey at all. But that’s easy to fix so I will give this another try soon.

This one had been sitting in my box of Della Terra teas for quite a while… figured I should get around to trying it.

Wow… does it ever have some bite! The initial flavour is smooth and a bit chocolatey, which morphs into raisiny tones (love!) but then the chili gets ya! Unfortunately, I’m tasting a bit of “red pepper” flavour with the chill, and I hatehatehate red pepper. Gotta admit though, that this does taste like a chill chocolate truffle. Just not one that I necessarily would enjoy.

I’ll have to give this a shot sweetened and with milk, as that should tone down the heat and perhaps improve the flavour for picky me :)

Keep in mind that the rating here is biased, and that I think this is a pretty good tea. Just not a tea for me, perhaps.

This was the other free ounce I requested with my Della Terra order. This and the S’mores was really what made the decision for me to order from them. I really wanted a chocolate peppery tea, and I even started a thread in the forums a while ago asking if anyone knew about some good ones. This isn’t bad! It doesn’t have too much flavor either in the chocolate or chili department. But maybe I’m just being picky. Maybe I just except ridiculous amounts of flavor from every tea. That was my main problem with the S’mores tea also, that the flavors were GOOD, there just wasn’t a ton of flavor. But for some reason this seems like a mild coffee taste to me. The chocolate reminds me of a low key hot chocolate, and not many chocolatey teas do remind me of hot chocolate. You can taste the peppercorns, which seem sweeter than they are spicey. And I really don’t find too much of the actual pepper. I like this, but I wish there was more flavor! I once went to a Mexican restaurant and ordered a hot chocolate, thinking it would be a nice spicey hot chocolate I’ve heard the country has, but of course they just gave me a packet of hot chocolate. This tea is much much better.

Azzrian

Ah man yeah authentic mexican hot chocolate is good!

I really enjoy the flavor on this one, but it’s not the best Della Terra Tea I’ve ever had. I love the mix of chocolate and chili, and it’s a dark chocolate flavor (my fave) to boot. But there is a slightly artificial flavor taste to it.

(I used to make my own bath salts and soaps for fun and I used an artificial chocolate scent. That’s what it reminds me of.)

Still this is decent and decadent. I’d buy it again.
