It’s a slice
There’s not much you can count on in this topsy-turvy world, but one thing we’re sure of is chocolate cake. No matter who you are, a big slice of cake is pretty much guaranteed to make you happy. We call it the Sweet Life Theory: life just isn’t as sweet without chocolate. And this cocoa and cake-scented tea is just as rich and chocolaty as the real thing. With this in your cupboard, a smile is always within arm’s reach. No baking or shopping required.
Ingredients: Black tea, candy sprinkles, roasted carob, white chocolate, cocoa nibs, cocoa powder, stevia
DavidsTea is a Canadian specialty tea and tea accessory retailer based in Montreal, Quebec. It is the largest Canadian-based specialty tea boutique in the country, with its first store having opened in 2008.
When I first had this tea, I think I steeped it too long and got too much carob in the scoop, because it was SUPER strong and slightly bitter. The second time around I steeped it for less time and added half a scoop of orange pekoe to even out the carob-ness.
Much better. :)
The first time I tried this tea I didn’t like it (totally killed my mood for the rest of the day since I had been looking forward to it for so long).
Finally (ok, more like 10 days later) I gave it another try….and still didn’t like it, I don’t like adding cream to my teas because that blocks some of its health benefits, and i couldn’t find a sweetener thats taste really complimented it, well some did but it didn’t taste like cake and I wanted cake darn it!
Then I got an idea from my Teaopia fireside s’mores tea and (I bet you can get where I’m going with this) threw two mini (and very stale) marshmallows in with my tea leaves and voila! I had cake.
Now I love it, not enough to stock up with it before the end of spring like I will with the birthday cake tea, but enough that I look forward to drinking it.
On a separate note that has nothing to do with the taste the brown ‘chocolate like’ slime that’s left on the mug is icky looking, the slime left in my tea strainer is icky, and annoying (insert words not appropriate for this venue. lots and lots of those words) to clean, I basically had to put it in a pot of boiling water, now I just put the leaves straight in the cup (I didn’t drink the liquid at the very bottom anyway because as mentioned previously it reminded me way too much of sludge. I have never had that much of a problem with my strainer and other chocolate teas.
This certainly smelled very chocolatey, I was nervous because there’s sweetener in the ingredients, and while I like my milk tea mildly sweet, I generally prefer my dessert teas to smell sweet but not actually taste sweet? The taste was not really anything groundbreaking, like a mild china black tea, the smell did not transfer at all. A little astringent, I think I steeped for around 3 mins, 195F, so if one were to go hotter or longer, it would be more astringent. As for as chocolate teas go, I’ve had better, I’ll drink this up, but also try to regift some.
It reminds me a lot of Chocolate Macaroon, only minus the coconut. It’s very rich and fudgey but a bit boring. It would be good if you’re looking for a solely chocolate tea. I tried the Chocolate Cake infused bunny as well and it was sooo delicious. The tea really does come through and the chocolate was super creamy. The only bummer was the tiny HARD chunks (I’m guessing it was carob) that kind of interrupted the smoothness of the chocolate. I have tea rewards to redeem in July and if there’s still bunnies left I would definitely get more.
I very much enjoyed Chocolate Cake in, none other than, a latte! (go figure). But I find it extremely similar to Hot Chocolate. I find it only needs a touch of sugar, but it has a wonderful taste of chocolate! Great for indulging without completely going crazy. I found it to have a little bit of a bitter after taste, but I believe that is just black tea in general. All in all, very good tea, would buy again!

This is one of the two teas that DT brought back this year for our Easter Collection; I’m a little surprised because I’ve never really thought of this tea as all that popular overall. I suppose it is pretty thematically appropriate, though. And actually, I thought I had tried it before as well but looking here on Steepster I’ve never logged it, so I think I’m probably confusing it with another tea all together so I guess that means this counts as a “Project Tea Wall” tea!
I drank this one as an iced latte because that’s what I was craving, and one of our other tea guides said that this one works really well made that way. I have to say that on the whole I wasn’t really all that impressed with it; though I didn’t have any real negatives either. The biggest would just be that there was a lot of melted chocolate residue in the cup; you know, the goopy stuff no one likes. You couldn’t really feel that in the mouthfeel because of milk but I imagine it’d be quite strong if you were just drinking this one straight.
Apart from that, it was a pretty clear and plain chocolate flavour with some creaminess. Really simple, and straight to the point which can definitely be both a pro or a con depending on what you want from the tea. It didn’t taste artificial/chemical at all though, and that was my biggest fear. It was nice to see it not realized.
Just pretty average, all in all.

I am having a tea latte of this because I heard it’s coming back (yet again) so I decided this is my way to celebrate. I do really like this tea- although its not a favourite. I’d gladly get another 100g though. It is quite tasty. Its definitely chocolatey, and also really creamy. I like it best as a latte, second as a hot tea. It’s a nice treat.

This is another tea that I have wanted to try for a long time. I saw it in store when the DavidsTea Easter Collection (2016) was released but did not try it or purchase it at the time. When it sold out of my local store before I could go back, I began to regret this decision. A few weeks ago, I decided to redeem my Frequent Steeper points and noticed they had some of this tea as an online exclusive. Needless to say, I jumped at the chance and got a 50 g bag. When it arrived, I opened the bag and loved the way it smelled so much that I couldn’t stop smelling it. The tea also tastes amazing. It is very creamy and chocolatey but not sickeningly sweet like some other chocolate teas. It also does not oversteep in my experience. It is one of my go-to teas now when I am making a travel mug to go out for the day with because you do not need to remove the tea infuser. If this came back to stores, I would definitely consider repurchasing. I will miss this tea now that I have run out completely.
