Tea of the Week for April 13, 2020!

Our Second Tea from our “Celebration of Spring” Collection!

For our Celebration of Spring collection, I wanted to bring some of my favorite spring fruit flavors into focus. With so many delicious fruit flavors to choose from, it was difficult to narrow down the flavors into just a handful for our April selections, so I decided to bring a few favorites together in the same tea. At first, I was just going to do a Mango Sherbet tisane, since I have a special place in my heart for Mango frozen treats – but at the last minute, I decided that I also wanted a lemon sorbet kind of flavor – so I decided to bring those two flavors together into one amazing teatime treat.

What came of of that decision is a little something that’s sweet, creamy, bright & a wee bit tart for your teacup! This tea enlivens the palate with a flavor that says “springtime” in a lovely, cheerful way & because it’s naturally caffeine-free, you can enjoy it any time of day or night!

It starts with a blend of organic green rooibos & lemon-y herbs. Then I added some lemon peel & lemon wedges, freeze-dried mangoes & vanilla bean. The result is a taste that is sweet & tart & oh-so-delightfully creamy.

Why yes, it is VEGAN, organic, gluten-free, allergen-free & caffeine-free!

organic ingredients: green rooibos, lemon verbena, lemon grass, mangoes, lemon peel, lemon wedges, vanilla bean & natural flavors

So nice! This tisane is just delightful. The mango – the lemon – the vanilla … they all work together so well here. I didn’t want any one of the flavors to dominate the cup – I wanted this to be a lovely medley of the three flavors together. The lemon offers a gentle brightness. The mango is juicy & sweet. The vanilla is creamy & brings a bit of softness to the overall flavor – something that manages to scream springtime while delivering it in a beautifully calm whispering song that sings to the taste buds.

to brew: give this blend a really good shake before you measure it – there are a lot of different lemony herbs in this blend & its important to give it a shake to make sure all the ingredients are blended well – so that you get a little bit of everything in every measurement. use 4g of leaf to 12 ounces of very hot water (heated to 190°F) & steep for 10 minutes (or more!), strain & allow to cool for at least 5 minutes before you start sipping to allow those flavors to develop.

I made this as a cold brew. The tea is strongly mango… I’m surprised I’m hardly tasting any lemon, given how many lemony ingredients are in the blend and how strongly the dry leaf aroma smelled of lemon, but that mango is just really taking front and center in the cold brew steep. It’s a very juicy and refreshing mango note, veering toward the greener side. I get some lemony citrus notes in the aftertaste, particularly a more herbaceous and grassy citrus flavor from the green rooibos and lemongrass. It’s an easy thirst-quencher iced tea.

(52teas (Anne) 2022: 90)

Quite a pleasant cup of this today, and I am reminded that the mango Anne uses is more of the green/overripe type, whereas I prefer the juicy yellow ripe mango (like Lupicia uses). However, I’m drinking it cooled and it’s refreshing and a tad floral. Really not bad; I should use up the rest for iced tea in the summer.

Cold Brew!

You ever drink something and acknowledge the flavours and then, like, immediately forget them!? I remember really being delighted at how present the taste of the green rooibos was, and finding the super delicate fruit additions refreshing. However, I don’t really remember much about the actual distinct qualities of the fruit. Couldn’t tell you if the lemon or mango was more prominent or really much else. Not overly sweet or acidic. That’s kinda it though…

Sipdown 12-2021
Cold brewed this, as it seemed like the flavor profile was calling to be cold. I found it pretty average. Lemon was definitely the dominant flavor, with some creaminess in the finish of the sip. But, I didn’t taste any mango.

Very light, fruity, and tasty. I love the green rooibos! The lemon isn’t fake or weird at all. It was just the softest, loveliest combination. The cold brewed resteep was nice as well. A wonderful mystery bag find! More green rooibos!

Never tried green rooibos yet…

It’s my favorite base for fruity teas!

Martin Bednář

I guess I need give it a try. If only I get it somewhere, seems rare here.

I agree with AJ, green rooibos is way nicer blended with fruity or citrus flavors, IMO. I tend to get off-putting medicinal notes when red rooibos is mixed with those flavors. But the green rooibos is far more uncommon and finding blends with it can be troublesome.

Martin Bednář

So far I found only two Czech vendors having green rooibos blends. Some are offering the pure rooibos though.

Simpson & Vail has some really yummy green rooibos teas. ❤

I am afraid they will be too high shipping fees as I have checked out their website.

The Blueberry Lemon blend from Cuppageek contains green rooibos.

I guess I know what I will brew today :D

L is for… Lemon Mango Sherbet

How does the day go by so quickly? And why do I procrastinate so much? I intended to finish my research memo today. It’s past 3:30 pm and I haven’t started working on it. I am close to being done – 2 pages away from completing my 20-page paper – but I just can’t bring myself to focus. Instead I purchased 2 skirts and made lots of tea and it’s all sitting next to me.

This has cold brewed for hours/overnight. It’s refreshing enough but its mostly green rooibos with some lemon. The aftertaste is green rooibos and very subtle mango. I just find a want more of the flavor and less of the base. It’s alright to drink but unremarkable in the grand scheme of things.

Courtney

I understand where you’re coming from with the time. I feel like my procrastination isn’t so bad, then I notice the time. XD

April 2020 Blend

Ok, I finished this one off last week and I think I need more time with it to form an opinion or give it a rating (ie – I still need to drink more). Rooibos and I have a mercurial relationship.

I always love the idea of green rooibos more than the actual thing but this one is not bad. I do get more unripe (Green) mango salad than sherbet half the time but that’s not a terrible thing either!
