Tea of the Week for February 3, 2020!

Since it’s February, I usually feel inspired to create at least one tea that’s a little bit – well, you know – romantic? This year, this is that tea.

This blend starts with a base of Rose Congou & a wonderful Yunnan Imperial – to which I add strawberries. I also add a few rose buds because the Rose Congou has a lot of rose petals but not quite enough rose buds for my liking. (I love rose bud tea!) I wasn’t sure how the blend would turn out – but I kept my fingers crossed.

This is LOVELY! The rose and strawberry play very well together – with a beautiful sweetness from both the strawberry & the rose. The black tea base is flavorful enough to hold up to the strong flavors of the fruit & the flower, but not so bold that it overpowers them. It’s a really nice, harmonious blend that I think you guys are gonna love.

It’s also VEGAN, organic, gluten-free & allergen-free!

organic ingredients: black teas, strawberries, rose buds/petals & natural flavors

I have been seriously craving rose-flavored black tea, but that is yet another casualty of my high-sipdowns-low-orders over the last several years, so I don’t have one in my cupboard anymore. Then I found this packet, and was over the moon.

It is perfect. The base is malty and slightly coppery with hints of smoke, and an almost syrupy floral rose sweetness. The strawberry is sweet and somewhat candylike and blends seamlessly into the rose; it really pops in flavor at the back of the throat toward the end of the sip. It is lovely and satisfies my craving perfectly.

(52teas (Anne) 2022: 263)

It may be clear that I’ve left favourites/least favourites until last in my 52teas drinkalltheteas challenge… ha. This one is also not a favourite, as I don’t really enjoy rose in tea. I don’t clearly remember it now (had it a couple days ago), but it wasn’t ridiculously rose-y, though it was the dominant flavour. I don’t recall tasting any strawberry, nor what I thought of the base.

I would probably love this one.

Geek Steep S2E3 – Steven Universe

This is what I drank while watching the episodes I’d selected for our review. Now, I’ve definitely watched Steven Universe with a cup of tea before but I can’t say I’ve ever really put a lot of thought into what tea to choose – it’s usually just something bright and fruity that I have on hand in the moment.

When I stopped and tried to consciously pick a tea, especially for the episodes I’d selected (which are some pretty heavy hitters in terms of significance/importance to the series) it started to feel really overwhelming. How could I possibly choose a tea to encapsulate all that this fandom is to me!? Teas for characters or specific episodes? Sure, maybe! But not for the show as a whole…

And so I just didn’t. Instead I decide to lean into a character name pun and choose a rose tea in honor of the character Rose Quartz, and that worked well for me! I think it helped that it’s a bit more of a strawberry tea overall; fruity and bright but balanced by that light floral sweet undertone. There would have been many good teas for the show, but in my heart something vibrant and fruity and playful, like the strawberry in this tea, kind of just felt right.

Hmm, strawberry and rose—sounds like an excellent combination.

I just listened to the Geek Steep episode – I enjoyed listening to it and want to watch Steven Universe now.

#tiffanys2021sipdown Tea #142 overall / Tea #13 for April / #drinkwhatyouown February 3/25

Saturday 04/10/21 — @52teas strawberry rose black tea (Feb 2020 subscription box). Not a rose person and cold-brew for a few days only strengthened rose+black base, no strawberry. ):

I got this one from a mystery bag. I don’t love rose, so I tried not to scoop up any petals when I was making this cup. Hmm this cup is rather weak with not much flavor. The black tea doesn’t bring much to the table, and the strawberry is super mild, even though I made sure to scoop up a few pieces. Somehow, a little somewhat sour rose crept into the flavor, which wasn’t terrible, but I’m glad there weren’t more petals in there or it would have been too much. Milk made the mug a bit more exciting, I guess, and a bit more rose came out as it cooled. It was all much too mild for my tastes.

I just received my 52Teas subscription box, along with 2 mystery bags, and some more Sweet Potato. This one was particularly speaking to me, so I brewed some up this afternoon. It’s a very nice balance of strawberry and rose, and both flavors are balanced nicely with black base. I added honey, which I don’t think it needed. Overall, a very nice cup.

Sounds like a perfect haul from 52teas :D
