Tea of the Week for November 11, 2019!

One of my suppliers had some gorgeous Yunnan province grown tea leaves that when steeped, had a remarkable sweet potato-y flavor. I just loved this tea so I needed to get some of it. I wasn’t sure what I would use it for when I received it a few weeks ago, but then I decided that the best way to utilize this tea is to allow it to showcase the delicious flavor of sweet potato!

This blend starts with a base of those beautiful black tea leaves blended with big chunks of sweet potato & just a hint of warm cinnamon essence (no cinnamon pieces here, just a hint of essence to accent the sweet potato). That’s it. Just sweet potato, a subtle undertone of cinnamon & some of the most delicious black tea leaves you’ll ever taste.

Put simply, this tea is remarkably good. Very, very good. It’s also VEGAN, gluten-free & allergen-free. Oh & it’s very limited in quantity & because of the special quality of this tea, I won’t be reblending it any time soon – so I recommend grabbing a pouch while they’re still available!

ingredients: black tea, organic freeze-dried sweet potato & organic natural flavors

With sugar and milk, this is quite starchy and interesting! The second time I had this, it tasted mostly like slightly malty black tea. It was plain – not bad, but not amazing. The starchiness returned in the final cup. I guess I wouldn’t mind if it were even more potato-y!

Thank you Sil for the sample of this one. At first I thought I maybe didn’t like it as much as DAVIDsTEA’s Sweet Potato Pie. Then I realized that was an unfair comparison because despite both being sweet potato teas, they are very different and both very good in their own ways. This captures the flavor of an actual sweet potato so well. It is starchy and sweet (almost caramelized) and smooth. Simple, but great! The DAVIDsTEA has a lot more “pie” elements going on which makes it like dessert in a cup. This is nicer for almost everyday drinking because its got a nice flavor that isn’t overwhelming on a rather smooth black tea base.

Review for the 2023… reblend? Is this a reblend? I missed seeing that in the notes, but here we are.

Anyhow, I don’t know exactly what flavours I’d be looking for to stand out in a sweet potato tea, and I didn’t really pick anything out, however, this tea was pretty tasty regardless, with a great base. As per usual, would benefit from drinking this a bit more mindfully to see what flavours are actually present.

Yes, it’s a reblend. :)

I’ve had this a couple times and all I can say at the moment is yes to sweet potato! It captures that flavour for sure.

Very nice sweet potato Yunnan tea. You can see the little bits of sweet potato floating in it and the cinnamon is just right to add more warmth and flavor. Without the sweet potato, I’m positive it would still be a delicious cup but the added bits of dehydrated sweet potato, as well as the added organic flavors, kicks it up a notch for me.

Highly recommended. It’s really yummy.

I had a quiet Christmas. I am watching a Russian drama series called Life of a Mistress. It’s pretty interesting :) and a couple of weeks ago, I got to visit my family and saw my nephew again. I was happy to see he was still interested in tea! I brought him another package of a tea he really liked. My brother is doing better, my mom is taking care of him. He’s put on some weight but still dreadfully underweight. It still doesn’t feel like Christmas since I lost my dad awhile ago. I still say “Gotta go visit mom and dad”. Having said that, I still had a pleasant visit… And after coming home, having a beautiful peace and quiet Christmas at home, good movies, and nice tea was great. :D

I hope you all had a great Christmas.

Happy everything! It’s great you were able to get your nephew to start drinking tea. I’m sorry you lost your dad, even if it was a while ago.

derk

Glad to hear your brother’s situation is improving. Sounds like he has loving family to help him through this. Merry Christmas to you :)

My father passed away in 1988. I had been married for less than two years and had a little baby just a few months old. Life was so full of new things and mostly what I felt was anger – not at him, but anger that I couldn’t go show him the baby’s first tooth, first steps, etc. mad he was gone.

Years later we bought the house next door to where I grew up and I missed him so badly that it felt like I had been punched in the chest every day. I constantly thought of what we would be doing together if he lived next door – we would grow tomatoes together, and I knew he would have come over in the mornings to build the fire (we largely heat the house with wood.) it seemed nearly unbearable – years and years after he died! I still miss him, but it did get easier. I look forward to seeing him again one day. I need to share a big hug with him.

Hugs to you, and what an awesome memorial to him it is that you miss him and have such a place in your heart for him, so we all know what a great man he must have been.

The last couple days have been rough. I had a headache that lasted nearly 48 hours. My cat is sick and I’ve had to bring her back and forth to the vet multiple times over the last couple days (and spend $500 on tests/meds). Things seem to be looking up, though. My team at work was very supportive of me going home or an extended lunch to monitor my cats.
Anyway! To the tea! I’ve been anticipating this tea’s arrival since I saw the blog post go up. I love sweet potato, and brewed this up as a nice comforting treat, hoping it would cheer me up. It certainly has! It’s definitely not anything like Sweet Potato Pie by DavidsTea. This is a true starchy sweet potato, with just a hint of cinnamon. It is so wonderful and comforting.

I’m so sorry you’ve had a rough couple of days! I hope your kitty is feeling better. I know that can be so stressful, not to mention expensive. Glad to hear you had a bit of comfort this evening. Hopefully the rest of the week gets better and better.

Kawaii433

Feel better soon <3. The tea sounds really yummy.
