I was happy to reblend this tea – not only because it is a fairly simple tea to reconstruct but also because it’s quite delicious! This tea was released shortly before we took over 52Teas and I think the timing of its release didn’t allow me the time to review it for the SororiTea Sisters blog before taking over. So this is – I believe – my first time reviewing the tea!

I thought it would be fun to pair a rich bold assam tea with marshmallow root and organic marshmallow flavors. This is sweet, soothing, and delicious.
What I remember liking so much about the original blend – and about this re-blended version as well – is that the natural malty flavors of the Assam paired so nicely with the sweet, fluffy notes of marshmallow. I didn’t stray from the recipe a great deal – because why? The only real difference here is that the Assam I use is from a different supplier – as is the marshmallow root.
This tea makes for a delightful breakfast tea – it’s sweet and comforting yet rich and robust with the gusto to get you up and at ’em!

Cold brew 1.5 tsp leaf, 500 mL water, 1 hour steep
Smooth malty base with sweet and cocoa notes. Some marshmallow (not as much as I would have liked, but it’s present), so much vanilla. Very flavourful and assam comes through nicely. I’m not very familiar with different varietals, but I think this is a good example of the malty mouth feel you get from assams. It makes it feel rich, smooth, thick, and satisfying (rather than just flavoured water). No astringency or bitterness, despite the long steep and dark brew colour. The sweetness really brings it all together nicely, and it doesn’t taste artificial at all.
Flavors: Creamy, Malt, Marshmallow, Sweet, Tannin, Thick, Vanilla
So most vanilla teas that I try are kinda lastlustre. I guess I didn’t realize that what I was looking for in a nilla cup would be matched by a marshmallow version! I find that marshmallow has more depth and maltiness to it. Perfect pairing for Assam.
I guess that means I’ve found my ideal version of a “vanilla” tea!
The malt factor really does it for me. So happy to have this in my cupboard :D

I really like this one: a nice feisty Assam with a pillow of marshmallow softness and sweetness. Some days, it is just perfection just as is. Other days, I’d like more of this plus something else added to it, chocolate maybe, more vanilla maybe, perhaps torrone, perhaps roasted almonds, or maybe the slightest bit of lemon.
Either way, I would be delighted if 52teas kept this one as is around AND perhaps played with possible additions from time to time to riff on perfection.

I just got more of this in the mail. It is awesome! And in light of the storm it would be so lovely if I could stay home and sip tea but I think I will have to trek out in the storm to go to work :(
I hVe an all day meeting, should be fun. I haven’t had time to drink any of the samples you sent and part of me is glad because I can’t get most of them for myself if I love them lol
Oh I had to get out the front door too. I was just wondering whether there would be so much snow that the door would be blockaded with it. As it turned out, the snow, so far, hasn’t been a big deal, but it sure is cold.

I don’t say that often about black tea blends from 52teas because they’re usually quite exceptional. I think the black tea in this blend is just too bold for the marshmallow root. It was really quite strong and assertive, and, while I don’t mind that from a black tea blend, it really overpowered the marshmallow note. I’ll give it another go as a latte; maybe a bit of dairy will make it a bit less robust.

Happy December 20th! Yesterday was my brother in law’s birthday, so we saw the new Star Wars movie. It’s kind of a tradition of sorts, last year we saw episode VII on his birthday as well. Except this time, we didn’t have to wait an hour and a half in line to get in. I snuck in a thermos of the last of the Coconut Flan Genmaicha from Day 3 of the Countdown just in case. But I did learn that genmaicha tastes great with movie popcorn :P
As I scratched off today’s label, I pondered on how this tea will play out, I vaguely remember some old tea friends discussing the original blend when Frank was still part of the company; yet I never tried it for myself. Marshmallow and Assam are on such different flavor levels for me, so I am curious to see if the Assam will play nice with the marshmallow. I went by the package instructions because I know how touchy Assam can be when it’s over-leafed or over-brewed. A level teaspoon for 2 1/2 minutes – another short steep time – and I was good to go. I could smell a light creamy sweetness, just as if someone had cracked open a jar of marshmallow fluff in the next room. I hate to say this, but I may have found the one blend in this countdown that I do not like. I love marshmallows, and I think that the flavor is sublime in tea, and Assam is a comforting, almost nostalgic tea that brings back a lot of happy memories. However, the two together just don’t vibe. The Assam that Anne used is a very drinkable black tea on it’s own, but the robustness and the astringency of the tea itself almost completely drowns out the fluffity puffity marshmallow. There is just the slightest hint of a sweet creaminess at the end. I feel like the blend is a bit simple for what I know Anne can cook up. On the 7th Day of Christmas – This tea was in very big demand to be reblended! The recipe is incredibly simple (especially for a 52Teas blend) so I stuck to it although there may be those that detect differences here from the original, if for no other reason than I utilize a different supplier. I like the Assam I use better than what was used in the original blend – I hope you guys do too!
A beautifully rich, malty Assam blended with Marshmallow root – fluffy and sweet and deliciously marshmallow-y. This would be a great morning blend and as I type this – it’s technically morning (12:16 am) but I’m a night owl anyway so if tea caffeine doesn’t affect you and keep you awake all night, then it’s perfectly fine to be sipping at 12:16 am. If you try to avoid caffeine (tea or otherwise) later at night, you should probably stick to the earlier hours for this because it has some gusto to it!
going through reading about some of your teas- and you really are a night owl, Anne! eh so am i….and that IS a trait I passed down to my daughter lol
Yes, I’m very much a night owl. I usually don’t go to bed until around 5am – sometimes a bit earlier, sometimes a bit later so that’s an average. The one exception is Sunday night because I am needed somewhat early on Monday.
My youngest daughter seems to have inherited this trait from me too – in the summertime, she keeps similar hours to me. She can’t really do that during the school months but she would if she could!
Sample from Evol Ving Ness so the last time i had this one, i wasn’t all that impressed…something about it just didn’t rock my socks. I’m not sure if Evol’s sample was fresher or had a different sort of balance to the sample but this was a great cup of tea today! just the right balance of marshmallow and black tea to create just what i wanted in the afternoon :) thanks evol!
I’m finally getting around to drinking all those little 1 oz pouches I bought when Frank was clearing out his stock before turning the company over to LiberTeas. This one was a nice surprise, the malty flavour of a decent-quality Assam blended with smooth, slightly sweet vanilla and marshmallow flavours. I wonder if LiberTeas would consider bringing this one back?

Ok, so I admittedly had low expectations when I tried this one. I wagered it’d either be cloying levels of sweet think ‘Marshmallow Fluff’ or just really not deliver much flavour all together. Actually, though, I think this struck the perfect balance! It was very rich, smooth and creamy and the sweetness of the creamy ‘marshmallow’ really complimented the indulgent, confectionery notes of the assam base: malt, cocoa, caramel, molasses, a little bit of a fruity note…
Honestly, once I had my first few sips I had definitely planned to savour this a lot more, but that’s just didn’t happen. It was fantastic! Refreshing and sweet but ultimately just mellow enough. Best 52Tea’s blend/flavour I’ve had in a LONG time!
