From 52teas

Our Tea of the Week for the Week of
November 18, 2013

One of the things I find cool about blending flavored teas is that I can combine flavors that might not otherwise get combined. I’ve never seen butterscotch and banana combined in anything else, but guess what? It’s an awesome combination. Hope you like it as much as I do!

Roswell strange wasn’t kidding when she said this mason jar is massive. Like it’s huge. and she also suggested it could be use to hasten sip downage, and so I decided to have this tea this afternoon. I already know i’m not going to be reordering it, because the banana pudding black tea is way, way better (in my opinion), and although this isn’t bad, it just pales in comparison. Add to that that I drank like double the amount just so I could use up more tea and you have me disliking it even more. I can’t even pinpoint what it was about this tea that I didn’t like-I reduced the steeping time a bit which actually went a long way in toning down the rather loud base, and I do love me some butterscotch and some banana, but perhaps not mixed together? There was something a bit cloying about this tea that I don’t find to be the case with the banana pudding tea.

So yeah, getting closer to a sip down, although I’m not quite there yet.

Hastening sip-downage is always a good idea.

Roswell Strange

Awe, that’s sad. I really like this one, probably as much as Banana Pudding.

keychange

Hey, want the rest of it then?

Roswell Strange

How much do you have left? I still have half a pouch or so – so I definitely don’t need to be adding lots more to my cupboard…

keychange

Like almost a whole pouch. But you won’t be “adding it to your cupboard” because it’s just..enhancing what’s already there. It isn’t a new tea ;)

Roswell Strange

Technicalities ;) But sure, if you really don’t want it. I’ll definitely use it – and it’ll make me feel less guilty about being so close to sipping down my other 52Teas banana teas. I’ve been hoarding them for fear I’ll run out of yummy banana teas…

Sipdown (142/149)!

Ugh, damn you Tre for distracting me with conversation! I mean, good conversation but still! I wanted to actually cook myself supper tonight and not just microwave shit, and I wanted to enjoy several cups of tea, and now it’s 2AM and I feel like having caffeinated things at this time of night would not be wise even though I start work late again tomorrow…

I had this one during the day though! I made the last little bit in my timolino and added some milk to it. It was a nice send of: the tea was really smooth and creamy with silky butterscotch notes and lighter but still present banana notes. The 52Teas black base, which has its own really distinct flavour, was present but in a way that just fit everything really well and wasn’t too distracting. No bitterness or astringency.

So all in all this was a really nice way to finish this one off. I’m not too heart broken to see it go though; I burned through a lot of it, and I kind of feel like it was reaching the point where the taste was starting to diminish. It was from my very first 52Teas order though which, fair enough, was less than a year ago – but still, not super fresh (and I kept it in Frank’s packaging too, which has the clear window – so I feel like that “aged” it quicker too).

Also, since this might be my last tasting note for the night I want to thank everyone who PMed me following my remarks on my most recent Kiwi’s Big Adventure tasting note – everyone’s opinions/thoughts and personal experiences were quite varied, and all good things to keep in mind and take into consideration.

I still don’t know how I feel about things or how Tyrell does completely, and it’s something that I really feel like we’re going to have to talk about in person and not just through text – but now I have a lot more of an idea on how to go about that.

I’ll say it again, as I have many times before: The Steepster community is an amazing one! It’s incredible and breathtaking how great you all are in regard to not only tea knowledge but life knowledge, and allowing people to open up about their personal lives to people who really, honestly give a damn. Personally I wouldn’t have had anyone in my “Real Life” to talk to about that, so it means a lot to have people here that I can confide in.

Sipdown!!

Thank you Roswell Strange for sending some of this my way. I recall really enjoying my first cup but this second cup, though tasting very much like banana and butterscotch, is really astringent.

Preparation

I don’t like atsringent either.

Plunkybug

astringent

VariaTEA

It really ruins a whole cup.

Plunkybug

It sure does. I’m not a huge fan of smoky either.

Thanks to Roswell Strange for letting me sample some of this blend! I drank my first cup of it waaay back in January, when I first got it – and was pretty impressed. Butterscotchy, and that banana flavour that just treads the line between artificial and natural-tasting. The aroma reminds me of my beloved Banana Oolong, that DT tragically discontinued.

Preparation
Boiling 2 min, 0 sec 1 tsp 8 OZ / 236 ML
Hello.Kiki

I’ve always been hesitant to try teas with banana or banana flavor to them…

Kittenna

Some are absolutely fabulous; others taste like banana runts and it’s a bit sickly. This one is definitely more realistic banana, which is wonderful (though as I said, not quiiiite real). Have to be careful though!

Hello.Kiki

Every time I go into Teavana (I know, I know) I’m tempted to try their chocolate bananas foster. I just love dessert teas!

WHAT…… WHAT……. WHAT….. DID STEEPSTER JUST EVOLVE!?!?!?
So after looking at Steepster this morning and afternoon and now seeing this….. I have mixed feelings. I like the over all look update, being able to add brewing specifics easier in our notes, the tea ware rating, and even getting notified about tea becoming back in stock…. but….. I just don’t like the page for each tea that much. I mean it has some good aspects about it and the additions are great, but I am not digging the page layout.

It kinda looks like it is a single div or something were all the info runs strait down the center. I have to scroll really far down to get to the all reviews. I just…..hmm. I feel like there are some blank spaces that could be better utilized, but that is just me. Maybe I will draw and post how I would adjust it one day.

BUT OVER ALL! I like it. A lot of the added features are great! I always use to have to hand type out all of the specifics on how I brewed my tea, but now I can do that on the module. I loving being able to see the number when rating, the revamped look is sharp, clean, and neat, but not sterile. I also think they added a couple of sorting options to our tea logs, ratings, and cupboard; ME GUSTA! If anything this only makes me want to quickly learn PHP and Java so I can make an app that can let you post reviews, but also has tools like a tea randomizer, timer, and cupboard analyzer. Maybe even a tea suggester based on the preference that you put in.

Now I just need my semester to end so I can actually spend my time learning and enjoying it. >__>

Tea: Ok on to that. I bought some of franks tea last friday when they were on sale; and I finally have money back in my account. YAY FOR NOT HAVING SCHOOL EVERYDAY SO I CAN GET HOURS AT WORK!

I made it enough for me and my mom; Concentrated brew, combined the two steeps, and added hot water to the mugs to equalize it. OMG IT WAS GOOD! I can’t think of one banana tea Frank has made that has sucked; and this one is no different. I even did some more steeps later on for myself and found there was still a tone of flavor left. Even around the 4th steep! Glad I picked this up.

Now I just have to wait a couple weeks to buy some of the awesome re-blends frank has done; or pounce on them when the numbers get too low: I will get more Banana Fosters tea.

P.S. sugar is recommended, but not always needed. Oh also this taste good warm or cold.

Another one from the SSTTB! Made this one last night. As with a lot of 52Teas blends, I found the flavour on the mild side, and the base on the strong side. The flavour may be reduced since I’m sick though. But I was barely able to pick up the flavour of the banana and a sweet butterscotch note.I did add milk to this to reduce the sharpness of the base.

It’s a decent blend, and I’d like to try it again when I have my full senses, and maybe reduce the leaf a little and see if it helps the beast be less bitter.

Pretty sure that this is only bitter because I over-steeped it by two minutes. It’s hard to taste any butterscotch in this cup but I definitely taste the banana. I’ll have to try this again.
Thanks to Albertocanfly for sending me this sample along with a sample of every tea she owns. She is awesome! ^^

I’ve had this one sitting in my fridge for a few days now. I keep taking a few sips, and then putting it back. It’s not that its bad, it’s just that I’m not a fan of banana flavors. The Butterscotch is sweet and yummy, but it doesn’t fully mask the banana like I was sort of hoping it would. So the rest of this will go in my swap pile, and hopefully it will find a more loving home. I’m pretty sure it will, since lots of people seem to love Frank’s banana teas.

albertocanfly

I got this tea in my grab bag as well! I mixed mine with a bit of lemonade to make an Arnold Palmer. The two flavors surprisingly mixed well together.. and I don’t remember too much banana when drinking it this way, too:]

I HAD to participate in the 52Teas mystery bags, even if that meant splitting three bags with other Steepsterers: thank you Mandy and Marzipan! Marzipan did an awesome job splitting the winnings and Mandy did the math for what I owed. haha. I’m terrible with numbers. Also, thank you 52Teas for such an awesome sale! SOMEHOW I previously tried only one of the teas that we received and I have been able to sample many 52Teas! I got one I wanted: Rumchata Genmaicha but I was really hoping for Fruit Hoops. I’m willing to buy/swap some of Fruit Hoops if someone is willing!

The dry leaf here actually has a butterscotch scent. Surprisingly butterscotch. I didn’t see any banana pieces in the pouch, but the fruit is always hiding in these pouches. I will probably only ever drink the banana teas from 52Teas, since I love them! (Butiki’s banana walnut is good too though.) This is the black tea base I don’t love though. I don’t mind the black tea with these flavors though, some of the flavors make the black tea better. Oh, I just remembered I said this with Bananas Foster. The butterscotch flavor isn’t as strong as the scent and lends a sweetness. It isn’t a cloying, distinct banana either. Both steeps were good, but there are better banana teas from 52Teas (Banana Pudding, the Hojicha blend I miss and Bananas Foster).

SSTTB #1.

I am so overwhelmed, tea friends. There are SO MANY teas in here and I want to try almost all of them. I have all the 8 oz mason jars out, and all my strainers are clean. :)

So this one. You know, except for the base, this is pretty good! Definitely butterscotch, although the banana is hard for me to find.

Not a tea I ever would have asked to try, but it was at the bottom of the box (which of course I opened) and I saw it first, so… yeah. It’s interesting. I think I’m done with these blends though, as the base tea just isn’t a favourite.

Thank you, whomever put it in there! And thanks, Roswell Strange, for sending the box on to me.
