From 52teas

Lunar New Year is on the way and this year, I hoped to get a jump on it & release a tea prior to the actual Lunar New Year (which is February 10). While Toffee Banana is not necessarily a traditional Lunar New Year dessert, it is a classic Chinese Dessert, so please know that I’m crafting this blend out of love for Asian culture.

I love the way this one turned out! The honeybush & sesame seeds provide a pleasant nutty flavor to the cup that plays well to the flavors of banana & the caramelized sugar toffee notes. It’s also naturally caffeine-free, as well as organic, vegan, gluten-free & allergen-friendly!

organic ingredients: honeybush, bananas, toasted sesame seeds & natural flavors

to brew: shake the pouch before you measure. Use 3 ½ – 4 grams of tea to 12oz of very hot water (190°F) & brew for 10 minutes. Strain & allow to cool for at least 5 minutes. Enjoy!

serving suggestion: I love this one hot or cold! It makes a stellar cold-brewed tea! Through several taste testings, I’ve found that this is one that I actually prefer with a little bit of sugar (I use less than ½ a teaspoon per 12oz cup) because it highlights the caramelized sugar toffee notes. The flavors really pop with that addition of sugar. (It’s also REALLY good with a drizzle of honey instead of the sugar).

This tea has become my fast favorite to use in my boba drinks as well. It goes perfectly with the boba! I don’t sweeten it if I use it with boba because the brown sugar in the boba makes the drink sweet. I’ve also gone latte (or milk tea!) with it and it’s AMAZING as a latte drink. Just be sure to brew it extra strong if you wanna go latte!

No matter how you steep this, it’s a winner!

I taste a cooked banana flavor that’s complemented well by the honeybush. Though I’m not sure I taste toffee specifically, there’s something pleasantly desserty in there! Good with milk and sugar. My recent cups of this haven’t been as tasty. I mostly notice the slightly peppery honeybush, which isn’t bad at all, but I miss the other flavors.

Sipdown

I thawed a zucchini bread that was in the freezer tonight and made a huge pot of this for Ashman and myself to share. He liked it very much and thought it was a great pairing.

gmathis

Z-bread with pineapple, or z-bread with chocolate chips? (I have had neither for a very long time!)

ashmanra

Z bread with pecans!

ashmanra

More like a spice cake than anything else, really!

When I first saw this tea I incorrectly assumed it was referencing the more British “Banoffee Pie” which is also toffee and banana flavoured. Because of that I was very confused about the inclusion of sesame seeds, which smell pretty distinct in the dry leaf alongside the sweet banana notes. I understand now that the inspiration was different from that. I still thought the subtle undertones of nutty sesame were a little bit strange with the otherwise very rich notes of banana and caramel/toffee, but I’m trying to keep a more open mind since I’ve not tried the Chinese toffee bananas this is actually meant to replicate.

Also worth pointing out that strange doesn’t mean bad. All the flavour notes were really pleasant and well executed and, based on the reading I’ve now done, I feel like this must be very close to hitting all the hallmarks of what Anne was going for. It was just a combo I’d never had before, and I think it’ll probably take a cup or two for it to sort of “settle” into something less novel to my palate.
