Sipdown (197/201)!

Yeah, I took the easy sipdown. I’ve been in lots of mouth pain all afternoon and just wanted something toasty, roasty, and creamy to washdown the pain medication with. I know that I’ll meet this tea again, whether that’s sooner or later, so why not make it this one?

I brewed it up like Stacy had suggested ad used boiling water for a minute. Honestly? It doesn’t really change the delicious taste a whole lot for me. I’ll have to try her steeping suggestion some other time for a more proper/traditional Genmaicha and see if there’s a noticeable change.

I also went and pulled out all the teas that are currently my favourite black blends, and either tomorrow or the day after will be a day for just my favourite black teas, since I’ve been drinking a whole lot of everything lately. That sounds like a good way to spend a day!

Black teas are my favourite. Yum. I had a black breakfast tea day once – it was delightful.

Oh. I needed the pineapple fix from this one today. Perfect kind of “release your tension and relax” tea…

I don’t really feel like writing much. Meh. Next cup is a sipdown. This one was rather flavourless, though maybe a little buttery.

I also burnt my finger and typing hurts. Boo.

Sami Kelsh

:( burns blow. I hope you got some ice on it!

Sipdown (198/202)!

Thanks Kittenna for the sample. Sadly, I’m using it all up for this mug – I would have liked to play around a little with the whole ‘sugar and salt bringing out different flavours’ thing. It seems weird to me to add salt to tea; I mean, I don’t add salt to anything, and I never sweeten my tea either so I just made this cup plain.

This is one of those teas that you just have to try because of the concept. It’s pretty weird, at least in my opinion (though nothing like Bacon tea). It definitely solicited an interesting response from my friend who was over the other day when I said “Potato Pancake” tea.

So steeped up (with nothing added) I think this tastes pretty amazing! I’ve actually had apple sauce and potato pancakes before, though only once, made by my Grandma. We don’t celebrate Hanukkah or anything, but she made them for us anyway. It was a while ago – when I was in elementary school, but I remember shredding apples for her with a cheese grater, and loving them because they were sweet enough I didn’t have to add syrup or anything to them. I feel the same way about this blend; it perfectly captures what it claims to, and I think it’s really well balanced and doesn’t really need to be swayed more to one side.

Although it’d still be interesting to try it with salt added because that’s still a weird concept to me.

I’m also happy because, to me, it doesn’t taste green. Yay!

I’m going to add this to my shopping list as well, for when I finally finish off some of the Butiki teas I have that I don’t plan on keeping around (also for when I have money). Maybe I wouldn’t want a full pouch of it, but as a sample or something to drink very occasionally or as a treat – because this was good!

Adding salt?! Bizarre. I also never add things to my tea. :)

Courtney

Well, never sweeten, or add milk/cream.

Roswell Strange

I add milk, but not often – and typically never as a first cup (unless it’s matcha). I also sometimes add club soda – but again, not for a first cup.

Courtney

Club soda is an interesting addition. What teas do you add that to?

VariaTEA

Roswell Strange, have you ever had a Monk’s Blend tea soda?!? I think that would be tasty. Also, apparently I have Monk’s Blend on the brain :P

Roswell Strange

Lately, I add it to matcha for matcha soda – but also fruit blends. I haven’t tried a Monk’s Blend soda yet, though.

Kittenna

Nuts! i’m sorry; I should have given you more, because I’m not a big fan, and I had more. I usually give enough for two normal-sized cups.

Courtney

Neat! I’ll have to remember that. I’m always looking for ways to mix it up with matcha.

OMGsrsly

It is so neat if you add a tiny pinch of salt, or a somewhat larger pinch of sugar. It changes the tea so much. :)

Roswell Strange

@Kittenna No worries! 1 cup was more than enough (I got a good resteep too) – especially if I hadn’t liked it. I’m super skeptical of greens.

boychik

Adding salt is a good idea. When I added some maple syrup it didn’t do it for me. Maybe I’ll like it savory. Maybe I can send it your way. Let me know

boychik

i send you pm

Sami Kelsh

I’ll add a pinch of salt to a hot chocolate, so this isn’t a totally crazy concept to me. (Though the idea of a latkes and applesauce tea is a bit; I’m very intrigued, and also I really wish I had some potatoes in the house to make actual latkes now!)

I have enough for one more cup of this, which makes me happy because I think it’s a delicious kiwi tea! Now the hard part is deciding whether to enjoy it tomorrow and finish it right away or hoard that last bit for the ‘perfect occasion’.

I picked it today to pair with another green blend, in case I didn’t like the new one.

Also, I’m so glad VariaTEA sent me the sample, because I never would have bought it for myself. A) It’s a green blend and B) In store is always just smells like grass to me. Thankfully it brews up to taste nothing like grass!

I’m giving my rating a teeny little nudge closer to 100, and adding it to my shopping list.

VariaTEA

I am glad you liked it :)

Just Organic Tea was very kind and sent me some sugar along with my tea samples – however, I unfortunately do not add sugar or typically any sweeteners to my tea so I tried to be creative in finding a way to use this.

What I settled on, was adding about half the amount sent to me to some canned halved pears. Usually sugar added to pears or other canned fruits kinda dissolves into a sort of “glaze”, and this sugar didn’t really dissolve too well – but it did taste delicious, and I have confidence it would be a good sweetener for those who choose to add sugar into their tea.

I’m going to leave it unrated though, because that’s not really what I used it for at all.

Starfevre

was it gritty?

Roswell Strange

Not really, it just just dissolve properly. With the heat from tea, it might though.

Oh, ohhhh! God bless you Keychange for giving me so much of this because it’s beautiful and perfect and just so smooth and amazing and tasty and just great.

The cranberry is so strong and fruity and rich, but not tart – smooth and creamy because of the vanilla and almond. Mmmm! So far, this is the one Harney tea that I feel like I just wouldn’t be able to do without. I think it could be a daily black tea if I didn’t have so many options. Right along with my Monk’s blend, Cranberry Pear and maybe even Taiwanese Wild Mountain Black.

Fantastic black blends.

VariaTEA

I was having issues yesterday because I was craving Monk’s Blend and kept trying to find a company to order it from.

Roswell Strange

I set out a whole bunch of things for today that I wanted to try/sipdown and now I’m just craving all my favourite blacks… I don’t want to drink all my Monk’s Blend though D:

keychange

I want to try Monk’s blend also! and I’m so glad you enjoy this so much :D

Starfevre

I have never tried a Monk’s blend and now I want to.

Roswell Strange

I love my Monk’s blend, and after I’m employed and stocked up I’ll be more than willing to share it! :)

keychange

Haha…we’re all just sitting here waiting to pounce on Roswell’s stash once it’s replenished!

Roswell Strange

I’ll likely get more for my Birthday in March (I have three teas on my birthday list that I can only get in Regina, and thankfully my mom doesn’t really venture outside of the list I give her) it’s just a matter of being able to ship it :( But I think it’s something everyone should try.

Packed up some of this for Courtney, and now I’m having some myself. Regrettably, I oversteeped a little bit because I was struggling to get into my email. Every time I try to log in I get redirected to an error page for an entirely different section of Yahoo. Very frustrating considering there are a few places I’d like to apply today.

This is still really good though despite the oversteep. Like burnt caramel and marshmallow goo! I like this so much better than I liked S’mores. So thank you very much VariaTEA – this uses up the last of your sample. And thank you very much Keychange for the rest of yours, because now I can enjoy many more cups!

VariaTEA

I had this today too!!

keychange

I think this is pretty much the most disgusting tea ever, so anyone is always welcome to mine if I’m ever in the unfortunate position of owning it again LOL

Slowly working towards a sipdown. I think I only have one, maybe two cups worth of this one, and I wont be sad when it’s gone because this is yet another cup with no licorice/anise and I’m just finding that increasingly disappointing.

This cup is also a touch bitter and the cinnamon is really strong/unpleasant. Bumping my rating down a touch. Bleck.

Thank you VariaTEA for the sample. Yet another DT Mate to check off the list of ones to try, which is always a good thing.

Dry this smells very tart and fruity – not sure if I’d call it “berry” per say, but definitely fruity. Steeped it smells familiar, but not totally sure where from. I have to say, I’m a little disappointed though because I was bracing myself for horrifying mouth puckering tart and instead I taste… Like, a semi tart but also kid of muted hibiscus/berry jumble? Maybe it’s the earthy mate kind of holding this back? But it doesn’t taste anything really like what I was expecting. Also, the aftertaste strongly reminds me of beets. Ew.

Maybe it’s an unfair comparison, but I think McQuarrie’s Rum Cream would be much more fitting of the title “Queen of Tarts”. This is just… No thanks.

I guess I’ll try cold brewing it, but right now I’m a little less than impressed and I’m struggling a lot to get over the beets thing because it’s just so unappealing. I do not want to be drinking a hibiscus/berry/beet juice cocktail.

Also – it took me forever to right this note because I’m incredibly distracted by Season 9 of Bones (just finished the wedding episode), and Teens/Elders/YouTubers React episodes. That is distracting shit right there.

And… THE MAIL IS HERE! My/Tre’s Classic Who books from Carol Who arrived today (I’m especially loving all the tea/Doctor who quotes on the page you printed out), and the tea from Keychange showed up today too. Definitely going to have to make some Boston later today! I’m also happy to report that I’m still under 200 for the time being.

EDIT: More than half of this got dumped.

CLASSIC WHO BOOKS, YAY!!! high fives

carol who

I’m glad they are finally there. Apparently Media Mail is slooow. It was cheap but I know people have been looking for them and I’m sorry about the delay. Enjoy!

Roswell Strange

Not worried about the delay at all! In fact, I didn’t even notice how long it took – it was a pretty average wait time for things from the States :)

VariaTEA

Hooray for still being under 200 though I am sorry you didn’t enjoy this tea.

Profile

Bio

Hello! My name is Kelly, though many people in the tea community call me Ros or Roswell.

I am a mid-twenties tea addict, blogger, and all around nerd. I grew up in the Prairies, but a few years ago I relocated to Quebec to pursue a career with DAVIDsTEA in the tea industry! I’m still working on getting my French language skills down…

My first introduction to tea, in any form outside of instant and bottled iced tea, was about seven years ago when I happened to stumble upon DAVIDsTEA while looking for a birthday present for a friend! I tried their Birthday Cake rooibos blend, and I’ve been hooked on tea ever since! In those seven years; I was introduced to the online tea community, expanded my interest in flavoured teas to include a deep love and appreciation for straight teas and traditional brewing methods, got a tea themed tattoo, started reviewing teas, amassed a sizable tea and teaware collection, became a TAC certified Tea Sommelier, & even came full circle by beginning a career in the tea industry with DAVIDsTEA!

I consider myself a Jack of all Teas, and strive to have a knowledge and appreciation of all tea types, formats, and styles of drinking. I don’t like to feel boxed in to just being a “flavoured tea” or “straight tea” drinker – my expectations may vary depending on the type of tea or how it’s been processed/prepared but if it’s good tea, it’s good tea no matter how it’s been made!

You name it, I probably drink it- and I’ll absolutely try anything at least once.

My default method of preparation is hot, Western style, and straight – but I’m not opposed to additions if I’m in the right mood. If I ever add something to a tea or use a different method of preparation I will ALWAYS call it out in the tasting note though.

I like to listen to music when drinking tea, especially when I’m brewing a large pot at a time or steeping Gongfu. Often I curate very intentional tea and music pairings, and sometimes I share them here in my tasting reviews. Music is something that I find can deeply affect the experience of having tea.

I’m also one half of the “tea and fandom” podcast GeekSteep where, weekly, we discuss newly explored fandoms over tea as well as try to figure out the perfect tea to pair with each fandom. You can find us on Spotify and Apple & Google podcasts.

Favourite flavour notes/ingredients: Pear, lychee, cranberry, cream, melon, pineapple, malt, roasty, petrichor, sweet potato, heady florals like rose, hazelnut or walnut, sesame, honey (in moderation), and very woody shou.

Least favourite flavour notes/ingredients:
Lemongrass, ginger, strongly spiced profiles (and most Chai in general), mushrooms, seaweed, chamomile, stevia, saltiness or anything that reminds me too much of meat that isn’t supposed to taste like meat…

Currently exploring/obsessed with: Sheng from Yiwu, Yancha (Qilan in particular), anything with a strong sweet potato note. Also, I need to try ALL the root beer teas! Searching for a really good caramel flavoured blend, ideally with a black tea base.

Please contact me at the instagram account listed below if you would like me to review your teas.

Currently I’m employed in the tea department of the DAVIDsTEA head office. While I’m still sharing my own personal thoughts on new & existing DAVIDsTEA blends, I am no longer numerically rating them due to the obvious conflict of interest. Any comments expressed are a reflection of my own thoughts and opinions, and do not reflect the thoughts and opinions of the company. Any DAVIDsTEA blends you currently see with a numeric score were reviewed prior to my being hired there and have not been adjusted since becoming a DAVIDsTEA employee.
