Geek Steep S1E8 – Tomb Raider (2018)
Another week and another geek! This time, based on my suggestion/interest in this fandom, Marika and I explored one of the Tomb Raider movies for the first time. Both of us had really minimal knowledge of Tomb Raider, so it was nice watching a movie and breaking it down together on an equal playing field – just like we did with Pom Poko. So far, these “new fandom” weeks are shaping up to be my favourites!
I can’t tell you why, but when I was trying to pick a tea for the movie my gut just inexplicably was telling me that not only was a straight tea the right route to go but, specially, a straight black tea was the right direction! I did briefly consider both roasted oolong and shou pu’erh and a few different Chai blends, though…
I picked this, aside from that gut feeling, because of the name. It felt like it could easily be the treasure/artifact deep within a tomb that Lara Croft needed to recover – like a ‘Lara Croft and the quest for the Golden Monkey’ type of moment. You also have the tie in to monkeys and jungles, which felt like it could potentially be applicable to the environment we might find ourselves in during the movie. So, I was operating on assumptions/expectations of the goal of our protagonist and the setting.
I was sort of wrong about both, but it still ended up being a pretty good tea. I wont spoil my overall impression of the movie, but sipping on this!? Definitely a highlight. I wish I had done a different prep method though; I mug felt a bit wrong for this sort of adventuring type of movie – maybe a travel mug would have felt more fitting!?
