drank Maple Almond Cream by 52teas

(52teas (Anne) 2022: 205)

Oof, couldn’t smell the rancid sunflower seeds and missed picking them out, but they definitely are affecting the flavour. It seems like it would have been tasty when it was fresh (my rating suggests that, too), and even now, the maple is present and tasty. The sunflower seeds are just causing an unpleasant staleness, and I can’t really taste much of the base tea (or cream) either. Fairly mediocre cup as a result, but attributable to age.

2022 Sipdown 97/365!

Pulled out some (more) undocumented teas, and found a couple gems, including this one! And, it’s worth the find. The banana is light, but the spicing is so good. It tastes like more than just cinnamon; I don’t know exactly what it is but it’s quite lovely. Too bad there was only the one cup!

2022 Sipdown 96/365!

Y is for… Yunnan Eggnog!

Again, the name on my packet is different from Steepster. shrug Anyhow, this is the end of my 52teas alphabet challenge, as I have no X or Z teas! Hurrah, I made it, and only 3 days late. It’s nice that the last tea in my countdown was also a sipdown, one of very few this month that weren’t matcha. Probably will do a DavidsTea or other company alphabet challenge later in the year.

Although I enjoyed the base of this tea, I got very little in the way of flavouring. No eggnog at all. I wouldn’t mind seeing this reblended, though!

W is for… Watermelon Houjicha!

Tasty toasty melon. I like this tea, but in moderation, probably because of the melon flavouring.

W is for… When Doves Cry!

Didn’t really get to taste this one properly… oops. Can just say that it was okay. I have a single cup of it left to finish for another day.

W is for… Walking on Sunshine!

This tea is delicious. Very reminiscent of Sun and Cloud mist, but without the beany green base. Light and fluffy vanilla lemon clouds.

W is for… White Rabbit’s Tea!

(My packet does not include the “The”, so this tea falls under W.) I found it interesting that most of the W 52teas I had left to drink were white teas! 3 of ‘em. Anyhow, this tea was ok and I caught just a hint of carrot cakey spicing… but that’s about it.

drank Voodoo Cashew Mate by 52teas

(52teas (Anne) 2022: 198) [Final tea drank in March]

V is for… Voodoo Cashew Mate!

Not always a fan of mate, but the flavours here really worked for me! It was deliciously nutty and creamy and roasty, with most of the mate earthiness masked by the flavourings. I think I’d prefer these flavours on a different base, but this is not one I should have any trouble finishing. Bonus, looks like I have 2 packets, probably because I got a second in a grab bag at some point. Yum!

It looks like I managed to drink 71 unique blends from 52teas this month, so I’m well on my way to drinking through all of them by mid-year! I admittedly intentionally have not yet had a cup from about a half dozen favourite 52teas that only have that one cup left in them… I’ll save those for my final few, I think. And then probably start a campaign to get them reblended ASAP!

drank Vanilla Matcha by DAVIDsTEA

2022 Sipdown 95/365! (Final March sipdown)

V is for… Vanilla Matcha!

Back to the alphabet! I skipped “U” (as well as Q, a few days back) as I didn’t have any 52teas or matchas starting with that letter, so V it is.

This packet of matcha was only 9g (from the advent) so the resulting latte was pretty light in flavour, but it served its purpose. I think I prefer more than 9g of matcha in a nordic mug, though.

AJRimmer

I bought the advent on sale and have been enjoying opening a door each day, though I haven’t had a chance to try any of them yet. It’s fun to start each day with a little surprise!

Kittenna

Haha, I wanted to do that initially but curiousity got the better of me (and besides, I’d already spoiled myself on what was in it).

drank Monkey Business by DAVIDsTEA

(DavidsTea 2022: already recorded)

Had a cup of this as I was craving a banana flavour; it was okay, but I think a 52teas banana tea might have been more satisfying at the time as this cup was a bit sweet and lacked body.

Profile

Bio

I have always been a tea fan (primarily herbals and Japanese greens/oolongs) but in the last year or so, tea has become increasingly more appealing as not only a delicious, calming drink, but as a relatively cheap, healthy reward or treat to give myself when I deserve something. I should clarify that, however; the reward is expanding my tea cupboard, not drinking tea – I place no restrictions on myself in terms of drinking anything from my cupboard as that would defeat my many goals!

My DavidsTea addiction was born in late 2011, despite having spent nearly a year intentionally avoiding their local mall location (but apparently it was just avoiding the inevitable!). I seem to have some desire to try every tea they’ve ever had, so much of my stash is from there, although I’ve recently branched out and ordered from numerous other companies.

I like to try and drink all my teas unaltered, as one of the main reasons I’m drinking tea other than for the flavour is to be healthy and increase my water intake without adding too many calories! I’ve found that the trick in this regard is to be very careful about steeping time, as most teas are quite pleasant to drink straight as long as they haven’t been oversteeped. However, I tend to be forgetful (particularly at work) when I don’t set a timer, resulting in a few horrors (The Earl’s Garden is not so pleasant after, say, 7+ minutes of steeping).

I’m currently trying to figure out which types of teas are my favourites. Herbals are no longer at the top; oolongs have thoroughly taken over that spot, with greens a reasonably close second. My preference is for straight versions of both, but I do love a good flavoured oolong (flavoured greens are really hit or miss for me). Herbals I do love iced/cold-brewed, but I drink few routinely (Mulberry Magic from DavidsTea being a notable exception). I’m learning to like straight black teas thanks to the chocolatey, malty, delicious Laoshan Black from Verdant Tea, and malty, caramelly flavoured blacks work for me, but I’m pretty picky about anything with astringency. Lately I’ve found red rooibos to be rather medicinal, which I dislike, but green rooibos and honeybush blends are tolerable. I haven’t explored pu’erh, mate, or guayasa a great deal (although I have a few options in my cupboard).

I’ve decided to institute a rating system so my ratings will be more consistent. Following the smiley/frowny faces Steepster gives us:

100: This tea is amazing and I will go out of my way to keep it in stock.

85-99: My core collection (or a tea that would be, if I was allowing myself to restock everything!) Teas I get cravings for, and drink often.

75-84: Good but not amazing; I might keep these in stock sparingly depending on current preferences.

67-74: Not bad, I’ll happily finish what I have but probably won’t ever buy it again as there’s likely something rated more highly that I prefer.

51-66: Drinkable and maybe has some aspect that I like, but not really worth picking up again.

34-50: Not for me, but I can see why others might like it. I’ll make it through the cup and maybe experiment with the rest to get rid of it.

0-33: It’s a struggle to get through the cup, if I do at all. I will not willingly consume this one again, and will attempt to get rid of the rest of the tea if I have any left.
