This is a rather nice evening honeybush blend. I don’t know if I taste molasses, but there’s a thickness and sweetness, and definitely some light spicing. Not one I’d go out and purchase more of, but it’s enjoyable. Upping rating from 67 to 73 to reflect that.

drank Coconut Isle by 52teas

I missed recording this one when I drank it a few days ago; it’s a nice enough coconut green; knowing it’s there, I could taste a bit of green mango as well but probably wouldn’t have noticed without the suggestion.

drank Boy! Oh Boy! Black Tea by 52teas

Wasn’t feeling a melon tea tonight but I’m getting low on my remaining 52teas options (and keep forgetting to brew up those mate blends in the morning!), so here we are. It’s pleasant enough, today, reminding me as I believe it has in the past of Butiki’s Dark Side of the Melon, where melon was accompanied by a flavourful black(?), as is the case here as well. Unusual, as most melon teas seem to be on lighter bases. It is a touch astringent though, could be brewing error, so I’m probably going to leave the rest of the cup for tomorrow.

getanzt

Hi! I was wondering if you would be interested in doing a tea swap?

Kittenna

Hi getanzt! Perhaps at some point, but at this time I’m a bit swamped with life things, and couldn’t commit to making it a good experience. If you haven’t already, try posting your interest on the discussion board? There are definitely some members on here that enjoy swapping teas and are more active than I am :)

A rather pleasant cup of this one today, and I’m really tasting the named flavours – date and light orange, mayyyybe a hint of ginger, too. Particularly enjoying the aftertaste, which tastes like black tea and cakey flavouring… and since I drink 52teas’ flavoured teas for this combo (tea AND flavouring), I am pleased. Also, perfectly smooth, which is nice for my currently unhappy stomach.

drank Mai Tai Green Tea by 52teas

Another less-than-favourite tea. Although not a citrus fruit mentioned on the label, I find this to taste rather grapefruity, which has an unfortunate association with heartburn for me. I wish it tasted more to me like lime and orange.

drank Mango Cantaloupe by 52teas

Ehh, I could taste the (underripe) mango, and probably the cantaloupe too, but wasn’t really enamoured with this blend. I find I just really want that ripe mango flavour (which may not actually work with cantaloupe).

Ah, one of my faves. And it happened to have 2 cups left so I didn’t postpone drinking it! Unfortunately, though, I brewed it up and then couldn’t get to it for a while, and it wasn’t as good as usual. I think age is a factor here as well. Sad, but not unexpected. (Note: coconut is totally fine, it’s moreso just a dulling of the flavours.) Definitely hope this gets reblended eventually! Such a nice combo of creamy, delicious flavours and just the perfect base.

My tastebuds cannot be entirely trusted recently, but this tea fell quite flat for me. No coconut/creamy flavours, just a pleasant honeybush. So totally drinkable, just boring.

drank Guava Getaway by DAVIDsTEA

I think this is my favourite of the new bunch of teas (and the last one I tried). I often describe guava as a strawberry-banana flavour, and this tea is absolutely bang on, plus a bit of extra tang. Interestingly (and I only just realized this now while reading the ingredients), this blend is one of the only ones without an artificial sweetener in the mix. It’s naturally a bit sweet just from the fruit included, and I’m really glad that sweetener wasn’t added, as it wasn’t needed.

Regretting my last-year purchase of multiple pouches of Guava Cadabra, because I like this one WAY more.

drank Wild Raspberry by DAVIDsTEA

(DavidsTea 2022: 103)

I appreciated that the fruit was basically minced in this blend – much easier to get consistent brews. It was actually a reasonably tasty blend, although it didn’t taste much like raspberry to me – more like some other fruit, but I couldn’t put my finger on exactly what. Sweetened with stevia, so not great, but probably ok as iced tea. I couldn’t really taste the green tea, however – it was likely masked by the potent fruitiness.

Profile

Bio

I have always been a tea fan (primarily herbals and Japanese greens/oolongs) but in the last year or so, tea has become increasingly more appealing as not only a delicious, calming drink, but as a relatively cheap, healthy reward or treat to give myself when I deserve something. I should clarify that, however; the reward is expanding my tea cupboard, not drinking tea – I place no restrictions on myself in terms of drinking anything from my cupboard as that would defeat my many goals!

My DavidsTea addiction was born in late 2011, despite having spent nearly a year intentionally avoiding their local mall location (but apparently it was just avoiding the inevitable!). I seem to have some desire to try every tea they’ve ever had, so much of my stash is from there, although I’ve recently branched out and ordered from numerous other companies.

I like to try and drink all my teas unaltered, as one of the main reasons I’m drinking tea other than for the flavour is to be healthy and increase my water intake without adding too many calories! I’ve found that the trick in this regard is to be very careful about steeping time, as most teas are quite pleasant to drink straight as long as they haven’t been oversteeped. However, I tend to be forgetful (particularly at work) when I don’t set a timer, resulting in a few horrors (The Earl’s Garden is not so pleasant after, say, 7+ minutes of steeping).

I’m currently trying to figure out which types of teas are my favourites. Herbals are no longer at the top; oolongs have thoroughly taken over that spot, with greens a reasonably close second. My preference is for straight versions of both, but I do love a good flavoured oolong (flavoured greens are really hit or miss for me). Herbals I do love iced/cold-brewed, but I drink few routinely (Mulberry Magic from DavidsTea being a notable exception). I’m learning to like straight black teas thanks to the chocolatey, malty, delicious Laoshan Black from Verdant Tea, and malty, caramelly flavoured blacks work for me, but I’m pretty picky about anything with astringency. Lately I’ve found red rooibos to be rather medicinal, which I dislike, but green rooibos and honeybush blends are tolerable. I haven’t explored pu’erh, mate, or guayasa a great deal (although I have a few options in my cupboard).

I’ve decided to institute a rating system so my ratings will be more consistent. Following the smiley/frowny faces Steepster gives us:

100: This tea is amazing and I will go out of my way to keep it in stock.

85-99: My core collection (or a tea that would be, if I was allowing myself to restock everything!) Teas I get cravings for, and drink often.

75-84: Good but not amazing; I might keep these in stock sparingly depending on current preferences.

67-74: Not bad, I’ll happily finish what I have but probably won’t ever buy it again as there’s likely something rated more highly that I prefer.

51-66: Drinkable and maybe has some aspect that I like, but not really worth picking up again.

34-50: Not for me, but I can see why others might like it. I’ll make it through the cup and maybe experiment with the rest to get rid of it.

0-33: It’s a struggle to get through the cup, if I do at all. I will not willingly consume this one again, and will attempt to get rid of the rest of the tea if I have any left.
