Paper & Tea 2022 Advent Day 18: Golden Earl

A wonderful EG! I enjoyed P&T’s Red Earl as well as their bergamot is insanely smooth and seemingly complementary to all things. The floral notes are more mellow than others, yet the overall taste is very clean and almost crisp. We’ve been drinking these completely out of order, so although Emerald Earl was day 16 (and this is day 18), I haven’t yet tried the green base. I am quite excited to get to it. This one I would happily keep in my cupboard.

Paper & Tea 2022 Advent Day 17: Green Rooibos

I’ve never had a straight green rooibos and it was about what you’d expect. Fine, but nothing special.

Paper & Tea 2022 Advent Day 16: Emerald Earl

I really enjoy the bergamot/EG flavour from P&T and was quite excited to see it again here. While this is a lovely tea, and most likely a real winner for green tea lovers, the green tea base came through just behind the bergamot and wasn’t my favourite. There was a definite grassiness that sadly I’m not a fan of. Nonetheless, I finished the entire cuppa and did enjoy it.

Paper & Tea 2022 Advent Day 15: Vintage Lotus

Well, I am not generally a fan of pu’erh, unless the tea itself is perfectly hidden. Alas, it is not here and thus, this was dumped.

Paper & Tea 2022 Advent Day 14: Top of the Day

This one was so pretty I had to take a photo of the dry leaf! I was really surprised in the most positive way with this tea. Peppermint, hibiscus, and lemongrass? I wasn’t expecting much considering I generally avoid peppermint and lemongrass in teas. I was happily proven wrong here – somehow these ingredients come together to create a wonderful cup. This one I would order for the cupboard!

Paper & Tea 2022 Advent Day 13: Orange Kiss

Lovely, comforting cup. Mostly chamomile with whispers of orange.

Paper & Tea 2022 Advent Day 12: Tiger Rock Wu Lu

Lexa really enjoyed this one. I would say the notes they mention are bang-on: sweet pea, nutty, and a bit umami-like.

2023 sipdown no. 72

Freshly steeped, this smells summer sweet, like fresh nectar from a flower. However, as the tea cools, it just doesn’t sit quite right with me — that sweetness borders on cloying (as much as a completely unflavoured tea can) — I’m being quite picky here, but this one steeps up either perfectly, or in this weird way that doesn’t agree with me. I do think there’s something to be said for drinking this as soon as it’s at a drinkable temperature (as hot/warm as possible).

Paper & Tea 2022 Advent Day 8: Yerba Maté

I’ve never had a straight yerba maté, and actually I think only DF’s Maté Cacao Amande has been my only experience with this tea. This is quite lovely. It reminds me of summer and warm weather. It’s not like warmed grass but warmed some sort of greenery. I find this to be a very calming drink and I would order this one for my cupboard.

Now I’m intrigued to try other mate teas!

Paper & Tea 2022 Advent Day 4: Red Earl

This was amazing. Incredibly smooth and perfectly flavoured. I couldn’t taste any of that very rooibos flavour that I’m not really a fan of. The best non-caffeinated EG I’ve ever had and I would add it to my cupboard.

Paper & Tea 2022 Advent Day 3: 1876

This was a tasty tea. Light bodied with hints of sweetness. I honestly didn’t really take any notes. I’ve been quite bad for this calendar with that (since I did this one in November, though somehow December is possibly busier?). The downsides of being too busy/overwhelmed.

Paper & Tea 2022 Advent Day 2: Mighty Green

Definitely oversteeped this one (though not by much, but still), blech. Dumped.

Shame, but looking back to my tasting note — it wasn’t tea I was impressed about.

Phew, not just me.

Paper & Tea 2022 Advent Day 1: Muse

This tea is very smooth with a nice sweetness in the sip. The overall flavour falls somewhere into a light to medium bodied with no astringency.

I noticed I hadn´t checked in this tea yet, although it was most likely the first of the Paper & Tea teas I tried.
This is really a very enjoyable blend, of both green and black tea with added joy for the nose, as the rose and jasmine join in wonderfully! What I even like better is that this fragrance keeps you company during the entire process of dry leaves→steep→sip. Furthermore, the floral character makes this a perfect afternoon tea.
Once again, I only use a little more than half of the by P&T recommended amount of tea leaves, but I respect the brewing instructions : 2 brews with steeping time of 1:30 each will do nicely!

Flavors: Floral, Jasmine, Rose, Tea

Preparation
175 °F / 79 °C 1 min, 30 sec 1 tsp 8 OZ / 250 ML

The last few years I have learned to appreciate pu erh teas. As my stomach sometimes reacts quite strongly to fermented goods, and pu erh fermented teas are no exception, I cannot enjoy them as often as I would…so, finally, I´ve tried Wild & Raw.
P&T recommenda to use 4g of loose tea leaves and steep them 4 times. As usual, I start with a smaller quantity (maybe 2g), and if that quantity gives me a good cup, I stick to it further on…and yes, it did! A wonderful smooth pu erh this is, with the 4 brewings giving an almost equally great colour and taste (maybe a bit lighter the first time, when “washing” the leaves). And my stomach liked it as well!
Of this tea I bought the tea caddy, and I must say P&T´s tea caddies are great : the artwork is brilliant, and the caddies can be securely piled on top of each other…worth paying the extra price!

Flavors: Green, Honey, Tea

Boiling 1 min, 0 sec 2 tsp 8 OZ / 250 ML

When I placed an order at Paper & Tea last year , this was a caprice buy (17€ for a 20g pouch). This first flush Darjeeling was harvested in April 2020 and one “batch” of tea (5g is advised on the pouch, but I use less) can be brewed 3 times, according to P&T. And it can indeed : the short steeps of 60s / 20s / 45s are very good indications to have this tea at its best, but as mentioned before, I use less tea, maybe 2g instead of the 5g recommendation.
Spicy nose of the dry tea leaves, and typical first flush Darjeeling bouquet (muscatel, floral) once brewed. Light yellow brew, with very good body for the steeping time (and for the amount of tea I use, I definitely do not recommend to use 5g!!!), what´s there not to like? The price, for sure…both first flush Darjeelings from Kent&Sussex I bought more or less at the same time come in at less than 7 GBP for 30g, and although I only steep them twice (it might be possible to steep them 3 times as well, I never tried, to be honest), I enjoy them just as much. Maybe fancy marketing adds quite a bit to the price, or maybe the tea trade gives better conditions to UK tea companies?

Flavors: Floral, Muscatel, Spicy, Tea

2022 sipdown no. 47

I found this tea to have a full mouthfeel and a fair amount of complexity. The mix of black teas in the base is really lovely and ‘soft’, while completely lacking astringency. The flavours are subtle, but add to the tea with almond creating hints of sweetness and pastry-like flavour. I would order this one in the future.

Preparation
190 °F / 87 °C 2 min, 0 sec

Freshly steeped, the jasmine is quite apparent here with more subtle scents of bergamot and juniper. I’ve perhaps let this cool too much (lukewarm) because most of the flavour is also jasmine. Jasmine seems to be a bit pesky in that it takes over other flavours. Though, I appreciate the black base against the jasmine (as opposed to a green or herbal base which are the only other teas I’ve tried with jasmine).

I have one more bag left, so I’ll try to actually drink it while it’s hot.

I can suggest crushing the berries in the bag with teaspoon to release more from juniper.
