9 Tasting Notes
I purchased 2 cans based on the reviews this got. I dont have a strainer so I used a technique I saw on the internet to dry whisk the match in the bowl prior to adding water. This worked famously to remove any clumps! After adding the water and whisking the matcha foamed up perfectly, the color was a dark green. The taste was amazingly smooth with no bitterness. The caffeine kick was amazing. this is a very good everyday usucha for a great price.
I too received this as part of their $3 sampler. I don’t generally use tea bags so I tossed this in a bottle of water to try it cold brewed. Small amount of dust in the bag so I tossed it in too. Let it sit about 2 hours and gave it a taste test. Perfect timing! It was very refreshing.
I drank about half a bottle and refilled it to see if it would keep going. Much to my surprise it held on for the second brew. This is a very good standard sencha in my opinion. I will order more to have for this summers cold brews!
This tea is wonderful!!!! It has a very different smell, unlike anything I have ever smelled before. Its almost fruity smelling. Drinking it hot is the way to go, I tried it both hot and over ice and I prefer it hot as the flavors remain bold. Over ice the flavors tend to get muted by the cold.
This was a very unremarkable Shu. I have been on a ripe Pu kick lately and have experienced some great ones but this one didn’t measure up. It is very one dimensional and bland. Theres nothing exciting, no creaminess, no boldness. Its just deep red liquor with a blah flavor. I will use the rest of my sample to mix with young Sheng’s that I don’t want to alter the taste of.
You may want to let this one ‘breathe’ for about a week with some humidity and use a little more leaf when brewing. I usually go at least one week in the ‘pumidor’ before i would even think about tasting it. wait before you mix it and retry if before you proceed. I have one I got from Mandala and it has aged pretty good.
Don’t give up hope on it yet!
I have had this one for about 3 years and it hasnt changed. I usually use about 3.5 grams but used 4.5 on this most recent session and its still blah. It will mix nice since it won’t impart much flavor, I also used it to season my yixing pot so all is not lost.
Oh my after 3 years it should have changed some, but like you said season the yixing !
I just bought a cake of this and gonna give it another shot because it got great reviews elsewhere. Besides I just had a sample and who knows how it was handled.
I just got into my 2009 one yesterday. It has changed some since I put it up. It is still developing I think and the color has gotten a whole lot darker in the infusion since I got it. Hope the cake is better than the sample.
I received this as a sample in my most recent Den’s order. This is meant to be thin match (Usacha). I was pleasently sursprised by the lack of bitterness. It was smooth and creammy, sweet and delicious! I immediately wanted more! The caffeine kick was amazing, move over coffee I just found your morning replacement. I will have to include this on my next order as I loved it so much.
This is hands down my favorite Shu! Its smooth and full of flavor. I detect notes of raisin and smooth creaminess. I judge all other Shu’s against this. The liquor is bold and full of creamy flavor. Deep red in color. I will always have this as long as its offered.
First off let me say I love this Pu-erh!!!! It started off smoky and creamy on the first infusion. Subsequent infusions lost the smoke and got really smooth and creamy. Highly drinkable! I am on the 5th infusion and its still going strong, going to finish it off today. I am really impressed, the only downside is its only 100grams. I want more!!!!! This is definately a keeper and must have in the cupboard at all times.

JUst wait until the release of Phatty Cake 2: The Sequel!! Just pressed last week!!! 500 cakes pressed. Will likely do a pre-release on these. It is the same 2007 material with the addition of grade 3 leaf for added complexity. Can’t wait!!

I purchased this Matcha to make Matcha Au laut’s for my family. I am tired of paying a lot for Starbucks green tea fraps so this was an ideal alternative. I mixed it with Splenda packets and vanilla flavored almond milk and ice cubes in a blender and its a huge hit at home! My family thinks it tastes exactly like Starbucks offering.
I received this as a sample in my latest Den’s order and it was fabulous! I was hesitant that it would be strong and bitter but that couldnt be any further from the truth. It was smooth and refreshing. I let my wife taste it and she is not a green tea drinker and she enjoyed it also. I will definately be buying some on my next order.
