This tea smells so revolting, I can’t even be in the same room as it. I gave it to my sister to try, and she says it tastes like nothing. I can’t bring myself to try it, so I guess that’s all I have to say! I’ll withhold a rating in case the badness is due to old coconut, but I bought the tin a few months ago, so it’d be pretty annoying if the coconut went bad this quickly.

Yikes. I have a weak stomach, I’ll have to remember that. lol
I suspect in the case of coconut going bad “so soon”, it’s because the tea is already quite old before it even leaves the shop. Dried coconut has a shelf-life of around 4-6 months, so if the teashop has their tea sitting around that long (or longer) before they even sell it, well… because I’ve had so many teas that weren’t very old at all (I record on a spreadsheet my purchase date) that within months of purchase, while the package was STILL SEALED, I opened it and the coconut was rancid!
The cases where I didn’t have this happen? Small-batch blender companies where, after I bought the tea, it was pretty much a new, fresh batch of tea, and in those instances, if I kept the package sealed, I’ve had the dry coconut last up to a year in many cases. After the package is opened, I don’t have issues getting the full 4-6 months. So I’ve gotten really picky about buying teas with dried coconut in them, now.
Yeah, I did open the tin to smell it soon after buying it, and it had the unpleasant smell even then. I’ve had plenty of coconut go bad on me, and this one didn’t smell the same as that, and my family didn’t mind the smell, so those are the reasons I wasn’t sure. But yeah, now I rarely buy teas with coconut, and if I do, I drink them immediately just to be safe.
Mastress Alita, yeah, all joking aside, that’s got to be what it is. I have ordered some “unflavored” milk oolong that had bad coconut like this. It wasn’t so bad to call it revolting but I had to throw it out.

Now I’m curious what it could be…

I have no idea, and it could for sure still be the coconut since other reviews of this tea were generally positive – I’m just throwing it out to be safe!
