Himalayan Black Tartary Buckwheat Roasted Tea * Fagopyrum tataricum

It’s delicious and warming! A fantastic tisane for the colder seasons. Re-steeps as well as many teas with no more volume needed. Also nice that one can eat it after it’s steeped out.

I love this strange roasty toasty buckwheat tisane. It makes me feel as if all is well with the world.

I used up the whole sample of this tea that Ubacat sent me – about 2 tablespoons.

And boy, was it a great idea! I love the way this tea smells. It’s got a deeper scent than other buckwheat I’ve tried. This one smells like cocoa and honey, actually – like a Crunch chocolate bar, the kind of chocolate that has rice crisps inside it.

This extends to the brewed tea. A lovely golden liquor with notes of honey, puffed rice, and roasted seame seeds. This is pretty awesome! I’ll see if I can get a second steep out of it.

This tastes just like roasted sunflower seeds!
I feel like it might be nice to have some of this around to enjoy in the evening, when I still want something to drink but need a break from caffeine so I won’t stay up all night.

1st steep 20s: tasted sweet, toasty and nutty

2nd steep 40s: really sweet, toasty and nutty.

3rd (best/final) steep 1min: the best of the best of all three steeps strong flavors too.

I tried eating the wheat after but bleh too bland

I figured since I tried one buckwheat tea, I might as well try the other samples I have as well! This one also came from Dexter. Visually, it looks quite different. While the H&S version was coarsely crushed, this one is whole pieces of buckwheat, and they look like smaller versions of shelled sunflower seeds to me. I could detect a touch of roasty scent from the dry grain, but not much.

The steeped tea smells exactly like roasted peanuts, or perhaps peanut butter, with salt included. The aroma is a bit more buttery than the other tea. The flavor here is a touch milder, which makes sense to me since because the buckwheat is whole, there’s less surface area and less of the inside exposed to the water. Perhaps this one should be steeped a little longer than the crushed version. Anyhow, the flavor is very roasted peanut, and there’s a bit of that toasted wheat cereal taste as well. Overall, very similar! I couldn’t tell you which I prefer…

mmmmmm dexter sent this one my way and maaaaan i am enjoying this. It’s different from the other buckwheat teas that i’ve had….there’s something here that reminds me of something that i can’t quite place lol. But it’s tasty…and delicious and i am loving it tonight! Thanks dex!

Ha ha. I have reviewed this tea so many times. It is my go to non-caffeinated tea for a cold winter evening. It’s getting awfully close to the end of the bag (YS Sourcing order is calling me…) Finally got my Steepster cupboard up to date this evening. The last few evenings I have gone through my excel tea file and rechecked all my teas. I thought I would remove some I hadn’t taken off. I didn’t find too many of those but found a few I hadn’t logged. Wouldn’t you know it? Okay so I can’t find my Golden Snail Tea from Whispering Pines. I logged it on my excel sheet when I got the order. I remember seeing it and I put it with my black teas. I’ve been through ALL my teas and I can’t find it. Little gremlins must have hocked my Golden Snail! Where oh where can it be?
