From Upton Tea Imports

Starting with a premium Earl Grey, we’ve added the essence of lavender, which blends harmoniously with the traditional Bergamot scenting. Lavender blossoms lend a visual appeal to this pleasing selection. Depending on availability, the base of this tea is either an OP or FBOP Ceylon.

Origin: Germany

Today was rough and hectic, and you know how it is when you need 15 minutes of calm in the eye of the storm—you reach for a tea you know well, that doesn’t ask a lot of your attention but delivers pleasure and nostalgia. Thank you, Lavender Earl Grey. You were just what I needed. That first inhalation of the fragrance I know so well instantly soothed. The way you can stand up to some milk doesn’t hurt either.

Ka-blammo!!!!!!!!!!

If you’ve always wondered what a Lavender-flavoured punch in the face smells like, then smell this tea. But buckle yourself in first.

This was pretty insanely overpowering and while I can’t say I’m a hater for lavender, this was really really intense. Once you make the tea it was much more subdued, thankfully. I think I messed this up a bit though, I used lukewarm water instead of boiling. So I need to try this again. But on first taste, this is not my favourite of the Upton Earl Grey sampler pack. I like the other ones (eg Earl Grey Creme Vanilla) much better.

I actually don’t like lavender too much as a scent, though I do like it as a flavor. I was worried about that this time, since opening the packet unleashed a massive slap in the face of scent. Once brewed, though, it mellowed out to a lovely floral earl grey with a bit more natural sweetness than most.

While this tea was steeping, it certainly smelled like perfume. No surprises, then, when it turned out to taste like perfume. None of the bergmont flavor from the earl grey was present. As far as I could taste, I was drinking lavender tea and not lavender earl grey. Not really what I expected…

This tea reminds me of my experience with rosewater-flavored Turkish Delight. Despite knowing that it’s meant to be ingested, I keep getting twinges of “Why am I drinking perfume? Is this safe?” in the back of my mind. It’s not unpleasant enough that I won’t finish off the sample tin that I purchased, but I’m unlikely to buy any more of this. I guess I am too conditioned to think of lavender as a cosmetic rather than a foodstuff.
