From thepuriTea

Don’t be fooled by the name – White Monkey is actually a green tea. Its flavorful young buds are hand-plucked and processed on the famous Taimu Mountains of Fujian, China. The abundance of white “buds” (very young, tender leaves) gives it its unusual name. Although White Monkey is a rare and nuanced tea that’s sure to appeal to serious green tea drinkers, it has a clean, sweet taste that makes it a fantastic introduction to premium green tea for newer tea drinkers. Notes of fresh fruit, sweet spices and cocoa are balanced with a classic green tea astringency and grassiness. A complex, lingering and remarkably refreshing aftertaste makes this tea incredibly easy to drink while providing the layers and depth that tea connoisseurs demand in a great green tea.

I picked up this tea sample tin from the puriTea, I don’t have a lot of Chinese greens at the moment and I’ve been craving them somewhat.

The aroma of this tea is floral and nutty, and reminds me of a green oolong. The tea liquor brews up to be a nice golden yellow.

I’m enjoying this as an after lunch tea and it’s yummy! Nuttiness is my initial impression going in but as the tea lingers on your palate a bit it becomes very vegetal, assertive and a bit bitter. Steeping suggestions call for 1 -3 minutes and mine was closer to 3. I think I will try 1 minute next time, it’s a bit too strong for me right now and I’m finding the after taste a bit harsh. Rating may be subject to change. :)

Alright… I’m in love with this tea. This tea is amazing. I love LOVE love it.

One of the best green teas I’ve tasted in a while. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need some alone time with it.

Thanks for this one LiberTEAs!

I’m listening to Janis Joplin at the moment and it’s kind of fitting with this tea…this tea has talent, it’s bluesy but mellow but strong at the same time. It’s sweet but a little rough around the edges but in a good way. I think this tea is great!

Subtle, boiled potato flavor. Hints of spice and cataloupe.

Quite tannic.

Delicate, but with a “kick”!

I love the color of this tea. Love it. From the side it just looks like a light yellow, but from the top it’s pale green. Think of the lightest shade of seafoam ever. I hardly even want to drink it because it just looks so pretty in my glass teacup.

The taste is mellow and honey-sweet. There’s just a bit of the vegetal taste I associate with green tea. This is the tea I normally offer to friends who flinch at even the smell of strong green tea (which is still shocking to me — who doesn’t like good, strong sencha?).

Experience buying from The Puritea: < More later, but overall positive >

Age of leaf: I was not able to find this information on their website. : (

Packaging: This was a sample that came in three separate tiny, thin silver bags, that had the name of the tea on them (and nothing else).

Appearance and aroma of dry leaf: Similar to Adagios’s White Monkey I had tried the day before: spicy and vegetal, but not as strong smelling as Adagio’s; looks similar to Pi Lo Chun: light and dark green curly leaves.

Brewing guidelines: Glass Bodum pot with tea leaves moving freely about. Stevia added.
……….1st: 172; 1’
……….2nd: 178; 1.5
……….3rd: 187; 2’
……….4th: 187; 3’

Color and aroma of tea liquor: smells slightly sweet; yellow-green color.

Flavor of tea liquor: good: standard green tea taste, with a spicy note; had some flavor on the forth steeping.

Appearance and aroma of wet leaf: Not as many fragments in the water as Adagio’s when steeping. All of the leaves were floating on top for each steeping. Overall good quality leaf: few broken pieces and lots of full leaves and plump buds.

Value: very reasonable. $20 / 8oz.

Overall: Although the leaf looks to be of better quality than Adagio’s, this one is not as tasty. I do like the ‘spicy’ flavor in it, though (as I do with Adagio’s). This is a good tea for the price. Not much else to say about it.

I also tried this tea today. It reminded me of pi lo chun. It is a delicate tea with a sweet note. I enjoyed it a lot, and would recommend it to anyone who loves mellow Chinese teas.

I don’t get fruit or spices at all—what I did get this round is way more earthy nuttiness and wildflower honey. The toastiness brought on a lot of childhood nostalgia of guo ba (the rice that gets stuck and toasted on the sides of the pan), and smells of it too. It took awhile for me to remember exactly what it reminded me of, I’m so happy now.

It sets itself apart from other roasted teas or genmaicha I’ve tried (lots of them make me nauseous after awhile with their HEY I’M ROASTED taste in my face). Love the undertones of filbert hazelnuts too. Delicious :D
