From Tempest in a Teapot

Our Traditional Indian Chai tea uses black teas (Assam and Ceylon) as a base with cinnamon, ginger root, cardamom, variety of peppercorns, and cloves to give it a nice spicy kick.

A very popular blend, the whole leaf black tea leaves are blended with warm spices to make this tea the perfect winter drink, even though lots of our customers drink Masala Chai iced all year long.

The black tea base is a combination of Assam and Ceylon (named from the regions they are grown). The tea leaves are grown and dried to remain whole. As you steep the tea in hot water, you will be able to view the leaves opening back up to release the tea flavors.

The tea leaves come from plantations in Sri Lanka and India.

Fun fact, per the Tea Association of the USA, in 2021, Americans consumed almost 85 billion servings of tea, or more than 3.9 billion gallons. About 84% of all tea consumed was black tea.

Masala Chai is a caffeine tea that is excellent hot or iced. You can steep in water or milk. The milk gives the drink a smooth latte feel.

ICED: The Masala Chai blend is lovely iced on a hot summer day or served with brunch. Use 1/4 cup of the tea blend steeped in 1 gallon of boiling water or hot milk (you can use any milk – your choice) for 4 minutes. Add sweetener (we love to add Maine maple syrup) to taste and cool in refrigerator. (If steeped over 4 minutes the tea will burn and have a bitter taste – if this happens, add a ¼ teaspoon baking soda. Adding the baking soda will also clear up the tea if it becomes cloudy.

Hot: The warm spicy flavors make this an excellent hot tea. Use 1 teaspoon of Masala Chai Tea in 1 cup of boiling water or milk (any milk) for 4 minutes. Add sweetener (brown sugar or maple syrup) and milk, if you did not steep in milk. (If steeped over 4 minutes the tea will burn and have a bitter taste. You can steep the same tea bag several times during one sitting.

Great News! Per the Tea Association of the USA, Tea is the most widely consumed beverage in the world next to water, and can be found in almost 80% of all U.S. households. It is the only beverage commonly served hot or iced, anytime, anywhere, for any occasion. On any given day, over 159 million Americans are drinking tea.

Ashmanra’s sipdown challenge – December 2024 Tea #7 – A tea that was a gift

I received this as a gift this year, and I also previously had my eye on it — I think the vendor was at the fair this year.  So, a great gift!  It’s a great tea too.  An decent chai, definitely.  Most importantly, the base is robust enough.  The base is Assam and Ceylon, so not just Ceylon here, which I can always appreciate.  I think I notice at least four types of peppercorns in the blend, which is unique.  The spices are spot on.  It reminds me a little bit of pumpkin pie, but also it seems to have a hint of vanilla flavor, though there is NOT actually vanilla here. Just my tastebuds thinking so.  The second steep really does lean into a squash note — so it seems even more like a pumpkin pie with these spices.  I would say it’s an excellent balance of base black teas and spices.  Really good stuff.

On another note, I did check out the sale table at the grocery store and they had TWO boxes of two different Celestial Seasonings teas.  Though I’m wondering where they were in the store previously, if they made it to the sale shelf.  I intentionally was looking for them a week or two ago!  However neither box was Nutcracker Sweet, so I did not buy them.
Steep #1 // 1 1/2 teaspoons for a full mug // 16 minutes after boiling  // almost 3 minute steep
Steep #2 // just boiled // 4 minute steep

Flavors: Pumpkin, Pumpkin Spice, Spices, Squash, Vanilla

I’ve been looking at the end caps, but no CS gingerbread for me either!
