From Simpson & Vail

When we were children our favorite summer dessert was rootbeer floats. The earthy delicious taste of root beer combined with sweet, creamy vanilla ice cream was a sheer delight. When we thought of making teas that children might enjoy, root beer quickly came to mind. This extremely aromatic tea will assail your senses with its intoxicatingly sweet aroma. The brewed cup is well balanced and refreshing on the palate.

Ingredients: black teas, sarsaparilla root , and rootbeer flavor.

If you’re looking for a great root beer tea blend, this is the only one you’ll ever need. Unless you’d also like a no caffeine option, then S&V has a delicious rooibos root beer blend too! This is so strongly of delicious root beer! With only black tea, sarsaparilla root, and rootbeer flavor, I’m not sure how this blend has such strong flavor. I could swear it even has a hint of creaminess of a root beer float. This might satisfy root beer cravings if you don’t want all that sugar or don’t have any root beer around. But I added some rock sugar to the second steep anyway and it resulted in an even more delicious brew. S&V are just flavor champions every. single. time.
Steep #1 // 1 1/2 teaspoons for a full mug// 10 minutes after boiling // 3 minute steep
Steep #2 // just boiled // 4 minute steep

The scent of this tea is INSANE. So powerful, root beer to the extreme!

tea-sipper

Yep, I know… I have no idea how S&V does it!

Dr Jim

This is a strong, old-style root beer. It was too much for my grand-kids, even with sweetener.

Sipdown! (85/393)

I changed up my steeping parameters for my last cup of this in the hopes that I would like it better, but to be honest it didn’t change all that much. This time around with half a sugar added the root beer flavour was maybe a little stronger in small sips, but again the astringency was too much and I had to add milk, killing anything root beer about it. Maybe it was because I used an extra 1/2 a tsp of leaf this time, but I lowered the steep time and water temp. enough that I thought if anything the root beer flavour would be boosted and the astringency dampened, but no such luck. Oh well, time to move on and accept that this wasn’t for me.

Ha, I’m drinking this one today too and finding it very delicious. :D

Lol it goes to show how different tastes can be!

Tea + root beer = Not For Me. :-)

Root beer tea is probably better than you think it seems. haha.

I’m not quite sure why I wanted to try this one so badly, seeing as how I don’t actually like root beer all that much. But, I was fortunate enough to receive a couple different versions of root beer-flavored teas from NayLynn and I was excited to try them all.

This one was so not for me. Now, let me be clear—it tastes very much like root beer. Too much like root beer. It turns out I like root beer even less when you warm it up and take the fizz out. Good to know. Not rating this one.

“Holy crap, root beer tea!”

No, seriously, if you’re looking for a non root beer drink that tastes and smells (and boy does it smell strong) as much like root beer as something that’s not root beer could ever possibly taste or smell, you found it!

I had wanted to try this for awhile, so thank you Courtney for sending some!
I had to separate it from all my other teas because the smell is that potent! Nuts!

I drank this on a walk with my baby, hot, in my travel mug.
It was very tasty.

Though in hindsight, I’m not entirely sure I ever need to drink hot root beer. So the rest will be cold brewed.

I kind of regret not ordering this with my one and only S&V order but I probably wouldn’t drink it too often anyway.

Super delish though! Yum!

Courtney

I hope I packaged this one well enough to not contaminate the other teas. I seriously considered sending it in it’s own envelope haha. I’m glad you enjoyed it though!

It’s been a while since I made a tasting note and I blame it on piling up coursework. Thank you to Courtney for pulling me away from the hum-drum by sending me a sample of this! This smells and tastes a lot like root beer. Although, it has a dark (slightly smokey) black tea base flavor that reminds me it’s tea. I think I’d like this better chilled but it could be because I feel odd drinking hot root beer… I’m going to add a little sugar, put this in the fridge, and use this free time as an excuse to sample some others. :)

Sipdown (189/191)!

Thanks Courtney for the sample! there was enough left I probably could have made two small cups, but I figured I’d over leaf a bit and see if that would create more of the flavour that the dry leaf promises. I also toyed with adding milk, but wound up passing in favour of using the milk for a match latte later tonight.

Overleafing, did bring out more flavour so this is a more enjoyable cup in comparison to the first one. What I like about this blend in particular, is that it’s pretty creamy and has strong vanilla notes but doesn’t claim to be a “float” tea – at least as far as the name goes (I haven’t read the tea description, though I probably should). However, it’s still really light overall.

I may have slightly oversteeped this (five minutes), which could have been a help and hindrance. It may have added to the strong rootbeer flavouring, but there’s also a little underlying bitterness that’s a touch unpleasant.

I hate to say it, but my favourite black rootbeer tea is probably still the discontinued DT version (please bring it back for summer or something!) despite all its floaties. Just because Cherry Cola was crap doesn’t mean that one was too!

In other news, I think I’ve finally stopped adding to my swap for Courtney – now I just have to find the time/money to send it.

VariaTEA

I had this today too! Though our experiences are quite different since I didn’t get any creamy vanilla notes and I wanted them (even though I had no reason to in a plain root beer tea). I do agree that it is weak in flavoring.

Courtney

Eep. Don’t send too much haha, or I’ll send more. :P

Usually flavor becomes more pronounced as tea cools but I swear this becomes more diluted and watery. Very, very strange.

Tastes and smells like rootbeer! I love root beer and I liked this tea hot but as an iced tea it would rock!
