From Numi Organic Tea

Numi’s Emperor’s Puerh comes from China’s majestic Yunnan Mountains where organic wild-harvested tea trees are up to 500 years old. Hand-picked broad leaves are fermented into black tea then ripened, resulting in an earthy aroma and dark sienna hue. Puerh boasts a deep bold body, smooth and slightly sweet with hints of malt. This rich, energizing tea is deeply satisfying as a coffee alternative. Numi is proud to reveal the centuries old tradition of Puerh – a highly effective healing tea.

I enjoyed this with milk. It had an almost chocolate earthy smell. This was my first Puerh tea and I enjoyed this.

This is my first tasting note! I sipped this tea without reading any of the reviews (although I did research its background), and as I contemplated the scent, it reminded me of sitting in a quiet forest, next to a creek. I was delighted to discover that, indeed, “mud, Earth, and mushrooms” are among the flavors noted by the experts! I steeped one teabag in about 8 ounces of water, for 5 minutes. Wonderful flavor – not watered down – and no bitterness.

Re-steep: 6 more oz of water at the same temp, and the flavor and aroma are still there. However, both are sweeter. It would be interesting to try a fresh bag, and this time do a 1st steeping in 4oz, and a 2nd steeping in 10 oz to further distinguish between the two.

Ummm…..I am most certainly not ready for pu-erhs I guess. Dry—this smelled exactly like goldfish food to me. Not exactly wonderful. Brewed, it smelled exactly like mud and ash. It tasted pretty ashy and smokey, as well. This was not for me. I’ll definitely try more pu-erhs over time…but probably not for a while and maybe I’ll start with the flavored ones I’ve seen.

This glass of Numi Emperor’s Puerh, prepared from a filter bag, has many of the stereotypical features of puerh familiar to me. It actually smells a bit mushroomy, and is definitely earthier than either of the loose-leaf pu-erhs I’ve tried recently. Last time I tried this tea, i added cream, but I decided to drink it au naturel this evening. To be honest, it’s a bit much for me. The flavor seems rather rough hewn. The liquor is very dark reddish amber. I am seriously debating adulteration at this point, about a third of the way through the glass…

Perhaps the inability to rinse is a factor here? Does anyone out there ever attempt to rinse the contents of a filter bag?

I would still rinse it, just a quick 5 second one.

Thanks, madametj. I ended up drinking it with cream. Is the purpose of rinsing to remove the sometimes offputting odor of pu-erh? I read somewhere that people rinse also to remove pesticides and dirt, but Numi tea is organic, so hopefully pesticides are not a issue.

They have a brick of pu-erh which I’ll definitely try.

If it’s a really strong pu’er, I do two rinses. And I never have pu’er on an empty stomach, as otherwise it gives me stomachaches.

I’ve never had one with the offputting odor, but that would be one reason. I think it would also take out most of the mushroomy taste. Though, I hear when they smell like that it’s a sign that the they weren’t stored/aged properly…

Pu-erh has a very distinct aroma, and some may find it off-putting, but I love it. The aroma reminds me of a rich, earthy, smell, almost similar to a pile of autumn leaves. As to be expected from a fermented tea…it smells like it has been fermented! I find this Pu-erh really brings out the earthy aroma that a lot of bagged Pu-erh teas lack.

The flavor is very rich and again very earthy. The packaging claims that the flavor is supposed to be malty but to be honest I do not taste the malt (which is not a deterrent in my case since I do not like malty things) The flavor is very good for a boxed Pu-erh and it fills the craving until you can get loose (or brick)

I was pleasantly surprised with this tea. I usually steer away from Puerh because the few that I have had in the past tend to be strong and taste to much like dirt….for a lack of a better word. This was nice and smooth. Cocoa, earth, and some light smoke on the nose. No bitterness going down.

I’m a huge pu-erh fan and collector. I like this tea as a simple, easy to drink, easy to make, everyday shou pu-erh.

The first time I had this I was hooked, I do 2 teabags that will last me for about 4 hours. It’s a mellower black tea, not tannic at all. Added blule agave and vanilla soymilk to make a latte…yum!

Got this when I was out of town in a place with barely any good tea available. It was pretty good, but maybe it was due to my weekend long lacking of connoisseur grade teas. Had this after a big breakfast and it was brewed in an insulated paper cup with an espresso steamer. After a solid 4 minute steep I decided based on smell that it was ready. Has a smooth finish and very sweet smells. I would like to try this loose leaf next time.
