From Harney & Sons

We order up this tea from the best garden in Assam: Dikom. It is difficult and expensive to make a tea that is golden buds, but it is worth the effort. It is truly a joy to behold and we enjoy its light body and whiffs of honey.

What can I say to describe this tea? The leaves are beautiful, like lightly toasted, spun gold. The liquor is a deep, rich red. I am a bit sock, and can’t describe the smell too well, though I recall the dry leaves smelling malty and earthy.
I normally take my Indian black teas with milk and sugar, and although this tea is no exception, I needed less sugar. It is naturally light and sweet, and almost airy for an Assam (somehow it is both airy and earthy…). This tea is a real treat, and I am happy to have had the chance to taste it. Thanks Harney and Sons!
I would say that this is a tea that even novices could appreciate, but that only experienced tea lovers could really understand. Maybe don’t go buy a ¼ pound, but I’d recommend that everyone try at least a sample pack of it.

Very good tea. No astringency or bitterness. That being said, I prefer a tea with more oomph. If you like a mild tea, you will love this.

Had this again this morning for the sipdown of this sample. The bold sweet potato flavor is still pronounced. It’s good, but not something I could have regularly, I think.

Oh my sweet T-Rex. This smells AMAZING. Snorting in the scent from the little sample bag it’s full of dried autumn fruits, brown sugar, and some hay. And the leaves are gorgeous. look like a moron over here at my desk with my nose stuffed deep in a bag. :)

Steeped, it turns into a warm leather, deep chocolate and yeast, sweet liquor with malt that is intense enough that I feel somewhat guilty drinking it at work. I don’t normally write tasting notes at work out here online, but I had to for this one. I must get some of this. More than a sample.

If I were being rational, I’d try this side by side with Assam Enigma and that other Assam I love from Golden Tips before I said I have to have a few ounces of this one. But rationality rarely enters into my tea purchases, I realize. I will, however, not buy unless it is on sale or with free shipping, so I should have at least a few days to do some testing. Harney seems to have had sales every few days for the last year or so. Some better than others, and not always a blanket X% on everything or free shipping, so I may have more time than I think. :)

Regardless, I am going to savor this sample.

oh man.. that sounds good.

Inkling

Wow, this sounds amazing! Wish-listing it for when I allow myself to buy more tea!

Mike

Oooh, add another Harney & Sons tea to the wish list! :)

I’m finding that if I let Assams cool to just above warm rather than piping hot, those malts deepen and they become sweeter cups. Maybe just me, but…

Mike

I do the same thing!! I’m going to get a thermometer today so I can make sure I can reproduce my favorite tea experiences…I usually steep at boiling then wait about 20 minutes.

Evidently I tried this before and rated it 78 (I had added milk)…. I don’t remember this!

Made it today at work and it was like liquid raisins! YUM!! No milk added.

Loved it! Bumping my rating up.

Very light and mild Assam tea. Still has some of the maltiness of Assam without much astringency. I prefer Yunnan golden buds though.

A hearty tea to get the day going! Pretty golden tips with a honeyed aroma to the tea itself. Substantial body with a lightness, if that makes sense. Malty with fleeting sweetness. Takes milk and sugar well but the flavor is somewhat muted.
