Oh, hello new matcha friend!
There are a few returning matcha flavours and matcha dusted teas online now, but this bad boy is brand new – and also… unsweetened!
Don’t get me wrong, I’m definitely still a sucker for a sweet matcha but I don’t always want my matcha to be sweet and I personally really believe that unsweetened flavoured matcha can be just as good at the sweetened stuff. This technically isn’t DT’s first unsweetened flavoured matcha, but it might as well be – the others we’ve carried were Kale Matcha (which had actual kale in it) and Sunset Matcha (which had strawberry and orange powder). So, this is kind of the first “pure play” flavoured matcha we’ve done…
I feel like coconut matcha was a good flavour to start with to “dip our toes” into this zone. We’ve had the Coconut Water Matcha before, but not a true coconut. I find the flavouring pretty mild, but that’s to be expected – when you go from something where the flavour is being considerably carried/made richer from the sugar the unsweetened version is bound to feel a lot more subtle/delicate. What I really like about it is the creaminess – the matcha base here is already preeettyyy naturally creamy but the addition of coconut just makes it seem all the more light, fluffy and refreshing to me.
I decided not to take any of this one home for myself, as hard as that way, because I just don’t crave coconut flavoured things too frequently and I already have a frankly excessive amount of the Coconut Water Matcha – but it was a hard call! I’m really working this tea at being disciplined with the tea I take home given how accessible it is for me just within the office. So, I’m patting myself on the back for making that call.
I just really hope that this matcha resonates with people – I would really like to push more towards diversifying the sweet and unsweet matcha options in the DT line up, but there has to be a clear interest in that before it’ll happen. So far my favourite way to enjoy this is iced with a good splash of milk – it’s just a really refreshing cup that way!
Friendly reminder that I do not numerically rate DAVIDsTEA blends as I’m currently employed there and it would be an obvious conflict of interest. Any blends you see with numerical ratings were rated prior to my employment there. These reviews are a reflection of my personal thoughts and feelings regarding the teas, and not the company’s.
