From DAVIDsTEA

Second nature

Darjeeling is known as the “champagne” of teas: if it doesn’t come from India’s Darjeeling region, you aren’t allowed to use the name. That might be why the best Darjeelings taste just like the mountains they were grown on. While the first leaves in the spring tend to be delicate and almost green in flavour, second flush Darjeelings generally have a richer, darker taste. This one is bright, woodsy and earthy, with notes of honey, fresh mushrooms and meadow flowers – like a forest getaway in a cup.

Ingredients: Second flush Darjeeling tea (grade FTGFOP 1) from Darjeeling, India.

I got this as a small sample the last time I went to their retail store.
Dry leaf smells of hay, dry forest, and slight citrus tree leaf.
Wet leaf is broken half leaves and small pieces with the smell of re-hydrating mushrooms and wet leaf pile. Liquor is clear dark amber.
First sip is moderately brisk but still balance. Fairly strong muscatel flavors and very woodsy. Tree bark, earth, and grass.

This is my first ever Darjeeling and it WILL NOT be my last. The more black tea I have drank the more I am starting to really enjoy it. I bought this as a sample on my last trip to davids tea. It was at the cash register and I figured for a dollar why not try it. I am sooo glad I did. Very earthy. Someone mentioned it smelling like the forest after it rains and thats a good description(not the wormy after rain smell, the fresh smell). I actually steeped it again after the first cup as I was soo impressed and my wife had a sip and really liked it as well. cannot wait to buy some of this on my next trip to David’s!!!!

EDIT: I have since been to Davids and bought a full tin of this tea!!! its my ‘go to’ morning tea and my wife really enjoys it as well. No milk or sweetner….just straight up and I love it!!

So this tea I bought a sample of it from DT for 50cents since it was part of the boxing day sale that they had. I think I may try and get a few more of these because I rather quite liked it. I have been reading up on tea and tasting stuff, and I would say that this tea was a paradox for me. I didn’t completely love it, but I didn’t hate it either. So it made me enchanted and confused at the same time. This tea is definitely a darker black tea with a woodsy/ earthy kind of taste. And then there was a mysterious kind of sweetness to it… I’ll have to drink it again to get a better understanding of that flavour. I also found that I may have steeped it too long because I got a kind of bitter, yet not overly bitter taste from it. It will definitely need a second tasting to give it its justice. Next time I will steep this one at home as opposed to out on the go… so that I may see the colour of the tea.

Got this as a free sample, otherwise probably wouldn’t be drinking it as I’m just not a darjeeling girl. There is something about the flavor that I associate with teabags (even though this is loose leaf); wish I could describe it better but I don’t know the proper term. That said, it’s still a decent cup, and a nice change after all the flavored tea I’ve been drinking.

i got this for my boyfriend so he could have a simple un-flavored black tea around for when he craved it. but i quickly found that he will always drink the mate first hah.
i only got one bag of this tea so it’s already almost gone. it’s mild. easy. if you brew it they will come.
i think i will add a tad of sugar to this cup in the future. i’m not a sugar or additives to my tea kinda gal, but i bet this one would come to life with just the slightest nudge of sweet support.

Sipdown! Sad to see you go, but excited for the Toronto Tea Festival this weekend, where perhaps I will find something else lovely and refined?

Got this one as a free sample with my order. Say what you will about David’sTea, they do take care of their customers. Now that I think about it, does anyone actually say bad thigns about David’sTea?

My nose is a little stuffed up, but it usually is, so the mild aroma could be either me or the tea. There’s a noticeable sharp, dry smell (I guess that’s what you guys mean by muscatel) mixed with something like butter. Interesting and difficult to place. Combine that with the grounding sort of flavor and pleasantly dry mouth this has, and I can see this as a good breakfast tea. Only halfway through the cup and my stomach has already quit complaining about waking up.

Liquor is slightly murky and the color of a 10-year-old penny. Mild flavor, but woody, a touch salty (particularly in the aftertaste), and a light malt to it. Definitely old living lumber, not cut wood. Starting to get some of the mushroom flavors Not my absolute favorite, but very happy to be drinking it. Kind of what I wish their Yunnan Black had been. Doesn’t help that the last black tea I had was from a sample of Verdant Tea’s Laoshan Black, which is like MOTHERFUCKER Y’ALL LIKE FLAVORS HAVE ALL OF THEM.

Second cup is much stronger (only brewed it 5 minutes), and has a sweeter, more floral character, sort of leafy. Despite letting it cool more than the last, it still has a warming feeling to it, and almost a numbing one on my tongue. A little orange as it cools off. Texture is lighter than the first.

Anyway, I enjoy it, and it’s not too expensive. If you like mild, woody black, I would not discourage you.

I got a little sample packet for 50 cents at Davids, and I’m glad I chose this tea. It’s very light, and really good. I don’t know a whole lot about different black teas, but I know that I like this one and will probably get more of it.
