From DAVIDsTEA

Earl Grey goes east

There are a lot of legends and tall tales circulating about Earl Grey, but what about the tea itself? According to the Grey family, Earl Grey tea was specially blended by a Chinese tea merchant to complement the water in Howick Hall, their family mansion. This Chinese twist on the original blend is a tribute to that innovative tea blender. With oolong tea, jasmine flowers and schizandra berries from China, it’s a fresh, floral take on the classic. (MK Kosher)

Ingredients: Organic: Oolong tea, schizandra berries, orange peel, jasmine flowers. With organic flavouring*.

Another sipdown!

I haven’t had this forever apparently.

I still really enjoy this blend. The light earl grey and berries. Jasmine is present, but I would rather enjoy jasmine by itself. I am going to decrease the rating just a smidge.

This resteeps well at 5minutes.

And it is also fairly decent cold.

Sipdown!

This one came from the samples I bought from Janelle! The first time I had it was hot, and I really didn’t like it too much, so for my last cup of it I decided to try it cold despite my not really liking Earl Grey teas cold.

So, the last little bit of the sample (just over 1 tsp.) in boiling water, steeped 6 minutes or so. This was poured into my water bottle, and now I’m drinking it cold. Honestly, it does taste better cold despite my thinking it probably wouldn’t. The Bergamot is very light and there’s a cacophony of floral notes, Jasmine being the foremost. It’s perfumey, but less so than it was hot.

Thanks Janelle for the chance to try this, though I’m not disappointed this is a sipdown. I am happy I found a way to enjoy this just a bit more than my first time having it, though!

This is one of the teas my mom and I picked up on the weekend.

The aroma is strong and delicious, of an earl grey with something else playing around. Presumably it’s the berries, but I have never tasted them, so can’t be sure.

The flavour is definitely not what I was expecting, but I like it! It’s a light earl grey (a bit lighter than the Earl of Lemon, in my opinion), with a tasty berry flavour that I can’t quite place. No astringency, which sets it apart from regular earl greys. At this point I’m undecided as to whether it would be a re-purchase, but that’s only because I have so much tea! It’s quite good! Mom thought it was different, but ok. She opted for the Yunnan Jasmine White over it though, for her second evening cup.

I’ve drank a lot of earl grey blends, but never an oolong-based one before. The dry tea just by itself is interesting to look at with loosely-rolled green oolong tea leaves, bits of orange peel, jasmine flower buds and what I at first thought were juniper berries but later I realized were actually schizandra berries (thankfully).

The first steep brewed up quite a light gold colour with a delicate citrus-floral odor. The flavour was quite smooth though tangy with a subtle floral finish that isn’t too perfumy. I’ve never tried schizandra berries before so I have no idea how they tastes and I really couldn’t say if they’re influencing the flavour at all.

The second steep wasn’t any darker in appearance and there was an odd sour note (from the citrus maybe?) that made it not as palatable as the first steeping. I’m also not getting the usual sweet flavour I tend to taste in green oolongs as they cool off. So not a good re-steeper in my opinion but an intriguing novelty over all.

“I have a surprise for you!”
“Oooh, what is it?”
“Well . . . let’s just say that there was something new . . .”
gasp! New tea at David’s!”
“And it’s one of your favourite things . . .”
extragasp A new Earl!|”
“And one of your favourite teas . . .”
“Green? GASP OOLONG?!”

Needless to say, I was excited to get home and try this one. My amazing wife even had a cup waiting for me. On the first sip, I could taste the beautiful buttery oolong – David always does a good straight oolong – and a hint of Early bergamot. Unfortunately, that bergamot disappeared beneath jasmine the further into the cup I got. I think I’ll need to make another few cups of this before I make a final decision – come back, bergamot!

I was really pleased to see a nice, light Oolong in this blend. It smelled kind of perfumey, but pleasant. I really like my Earl Greys but don’t find myself reaching for them often at home, for some reason. But, I will always try a new Earl Grey blend.

This is pretty evenly balanced between green, floral Oolong and fresh citrus. This tastes more on the orange/tangerine than typical bergamot side, to me. And they don’t mention bergamot in the description, which makes me wonder if it’s perhaps not bergamot flavouring. The jasmine flowers are a really interesting addition, playing up the tea’s floral characteristics and make for a nice silky feeling on the tongue.

Like it, will happily drink it, don’t know if it’ll be a re-buy.

None of the new oolongs really spoke to me, but I had to get this one for the wife, of course. We look forward to trying it!

Yeah, they all seem enjoyable but not too exciting hence my only buying one (I usually have zero control when there are new teas).

I just saw this when I was looking through the DavidsTea site the other day and noticed it hadn’t been reviewed on Steepster yet. And now here’s a review! I am definitely looking forward to trying it (I am now amassing a list of teas for when DavidsTea opens in NYC).

I also wondered about the odd absence of bergamot in the description, but am assuming it falls under ‘natural flavouring’…? The description makes it seem like ‘citrus jasmine oolong’ rather than an earl grey, which may be why I’m not running out to try it.

De

I’d agree with the ‘citrus jasmine oolong’ rather than Earl. I got a faint hint of bergamot, but that was quickly subsumed by the jasmine.

nomadinjeopardy

Odd! Their regular EG lists just natural flavouring as well, but the Cream of EG lists oil of bergamot as well as natural flavouring. Who knows.

I have had this minute 12g for weeks now and I will admit that part of le knows that a full tin in my collection of Oolongs at home. I like that there is not heavy burgamont, I’m not a huge fan – the jasmine is a favourite flavour to me.

I love the Oolong used for this tea and will purchase more when I need it, one scoop of leaves lasts me a full morning of sleeping; brilliant!!

2nd steep, and I might have been a bit unfair after the first steep. Increased my rating slightly, as the berry taste has almost disappeared the 2nd steep and I can start to taste a bit of the bergamot and classic earl grey taste.

Aha, we found the lemon! Second time is a charm? This time when I tried the tea was much better than the first. It is a light tea, almost too light. The earl notes are prominent, although there is definitely a side of perfumey here. Upping rating slightly this time but I won’t be restocking.
