This is one of those perfect fall teas. I ignore it all year only to come back to it every October as soon as the weather turns colder.

It’s very smooth and clean to me, as if Dammann had managed to bottle up the exact taste of street-roasted chestnuts —definitely not candied chestnuts. I only get the faintest hint of vanilla and the gentle nuttiness of the oolong. It’s lovely!

Sipdown! (13 | 86)

So I had to look up what “châtaigne” is. I’ve always seen chestnut as “marron”, so it’s interesting that there’s another word for it. I learned a new French word today! :)

Anyway, I quite like this one. The base is a fairly generic oxidized oolong with a nice cozy autumn leaf sort of flavor. There’s some soft woodiness there as well. It goes really well with the vanilla and nut flavors that are added. The vanilla is very light but adds a nice creaminess, and the nut does reminds me of chestnut with its rich and toasty flavor. I’m not sure whether I get chocolate, but I tend to have a hard time with that anyway.

I’ll have to consider this one for a reorder in the future… It’s so cozy and would be perfect for fall! Thanks for the share, Courtney!

This is a great cold-weather tea, the nutty flavor feels so cozy and comforting. It reminds me a lot of DavidsTea’s Brazillionaire, which I love and miss to this day. So I find myself disappointed that there’s no raisin-y flavor here – it’s just nuts and toffee, which is still delicious but dammit, I want Brazillionaire again.

Oh, definitely! I also noticed Davids has Vanilla Orchid labeled as a ‘last chance’ tea, so I might need to get some of that before it’s apparently gone for good… which would break my heart.

Oh no! I feel like I’ve come across other vanilla-y oolongs that may be tasty. I was actually really intrigued by Bird & Blend’s Peppermint Cream (and I usually shy away from most minty teas)

I made this cup to enjoy with an amazing carrot cake that Lex whipped up to brighten the day! Then I finished enjoying it while we decorated the Christmas tree!

Now that I’ve decided it’s all hazelnuts and cocoa, I’m thoroughly enjoying it!

This makes a surprisingly good cold brew. I wasn’t sure how the notes were going to translate this way, but you know what? I say it’s more complex this way. Cold brewing in the fridge for nearly 24 hours has allowed the chocolate and nut notes to develop more as opposed to when I prepare this hot. The aftertaste is still predominantly the roasty base but there’s more going on here. I swear I just caught a whiff of Amaretto as I was taking one of the last swigs. I’m finally getting chocolate covered nuts. I’ll definitely enjoy it this way from now on.

A delight after spending 75 minutes on the elliptical. So tired and want to go to bed but must shower. Tea gone, thirst successfully quenched.

I decided to drink through few of these tonight and started with the worst smelling one so they would get better :)
Not sure what the heck is going on this mix… there is really dark pieces of oolong and then green oolong in there. The battle for what this is suppose to taste like clashes against my taste buds and I have no idea what I should be tasting :(

Sipdown #17

I’m disappointed in Microsoft Office. I downloaded a trial on my new laptop and then bought a license a couple days later. Once my trial expired, it asked for the product key which then it wouldn’t accept. After an annoying conversation with a Microsoft customer service rep whose native language isn’t English, I finally got my answer. I have to remove the software from my computer (uninstall it and then reinstall it) all because it won’t accept the product key code. Are you serious? This is such a stupid solution. And of course, it took several hours to get all this sorted out and then another hour to do it. I’m so annoyed. But FINALLY it’s done and I can get back to blogging.

ON TO THE TEA!

Thanks to JustJames for this sample! The first infusion is subtle and tastes like an unflavored tea. Although it claims to be an oolong, it actually reminds me of a Darjeeling. The base doesn’t have a whole lot of flavor though. It’s rather lackluster and doesn’t strike me as particularly oolong-y. There are slight hints of woody elements and…I want to say roasted, but it’s not really a roasty-toasty kind of flavor either. I’m at a loss to describe this one.

The second infusion is no longer flavorful and seems just to be a cup of warm water and a mere whisper of what it used to be. I definitely am not getting chestnut or nut of any kind in either infusion. It has a flavor, but it’s very subtle and…I can’t describe it as delicious. It’s just…there, kind of like how nearly everything has a flavor but that doesn’t mean everything is edible.

Overall, this tea is unremarkable. It’s not something that I would probably seek out again in the future. Wow, sorry for my rather harsh criticism. I fear my bad experience with Office has tainted my view of the tea. I think I need a hug.
