This 2009 Tianjian heicha has been our go-to post meal tea ever since it arrived. It has a gentle and warming smoky flavour that doesn’t overdo it. Having undergone pine-smoking during as a result of processing it also has some very pleasant pine and spice notes.
The soup is smooth and enjoyable, coating the mouth and leaving a cooling sensation in the throat after it’s gone.
Speaking of being gone, this tea will be available in limited supply, with only a few 2kg bamboo baskets in stock.

Yunnan SourcingThis was a nice tea to try, but even if it was still available, I wouldn’t be buying more of it. Ultimately, I found it to be fairly unremarkable beyond the pine-like aftertaste. The pine note is not overpowering but also unmistakable. Besides that, there is an aroma of unripe walnuts and forest floor. As for the taste, I found it to be mostly crisp and sweet with a mild spiciness and a resinous quality in the aftertaste. The mouthfeel is smooth and milky.

Though I find this tea leans a little closer to being medium bodied over full, it tastes so deeply of resinous wood and pine sap that the robustness of those flavours almost make the liquor seem thicker in mouthfeel than it actually is. On top of notes of wood and forest undergrowth, there’s also a pleasant unctuous brothy quality and a surprisingly sweet, clean finish followed by a cooling sensation of camphor in the back of the throat. The flavour of this tea is pretty direct and it’s not a heicha I feel like I would need to actively be present with mentally to appreciate, so for those reasons I can really see this being a good. Definitely a bit work from home contender!
