Yunnan Jig is a black tea from the Yunnan province of China, the birthplace of tea itself. Yunnan black tea is easily identified by its abundance of soft golden tips, and savory cocoa and black pepper flavors. It is a very forgiving tea; it will not taste bitter when over-steeped. Our Yunnan Jig black tea has a sweet, almost creamy aroma. Rich and savory flavor, with a slight cocoa powder finish. Earthy and spicy and soft, smooth mouthfeel and finish. Classic Yunnan.

The word jig has three definitions. The first, and perhaps most common, is as a lively dance. The second is as a tool designed to guide or hold other tools or work pieces in place. The third, now antiquated definition, is as a trick or practical joke, from which we get the Elizabethan idiom “the jig is up,” pertaining of course to when someone’s trick was discovered. We’d like to humbly submit a new definition though: delicious black tea.

Mmmm. I think that TeaEqualsBliss said that this was bold yet comforting, and she’s exactly right.

This is my first Yunnan tea. The dry leaves themselves smell a bit peppery, and they’re a really pretty gold/black color. Steeping these was really fun, because the leaves proceeded to twist and jiggle their way around until they unfurled and grew to enormous lengths. When poured, the cup is a very pretty amber color.

The best way I can describe this tea is robust. It tastes a bit earthy, but a pure earth flavor, not like dirt. More like if dirt were refined and recycled into an absolutely delicious substance. I don’t know. There is a slight edge of bitterness, but it was more on the side of malty. And there wasn’t any astringency to speak of.

I kept trying to taste that unique Yunnan peppery flavor, but I really couldn’t detect it. Maybe my tastebuds and tea knowledge aren’t up to snuff yet, or perhaps this tea isn’t the highest quality Yunnan out there. I sat in my chair with my hands cupped around the mug, sipping this quietly and reveling in the flavor. I really enjoyed this cup!

I have absolutely no idea if it’s even active anymore. My boyfriend used it early last week. I’ve heard that other people got Vanilla Jasmine and not Rose. LOL you know no idea how long I spent trying to find the supposed ‘peppery’ flavour of this tea. I tried different steeping times, water temperature, etc.

Eventually I steeped it once for 6 minutes and when I resteeped the same leaves (7 minutes) the resteep had something that might possibly be pepper. Or not.

I am convinced that this peppery flavor doesn’t exist. Bah! LIES! I think it has somewhat of a peppery SMELL when dry, but I probably wouldn’t have smelled that unless someone had told me about it.

Maybe higher quality Yunnan teas have a “peppery” taste? And Jillian, you resteeped this? I haven’t been resteeping my blacks just because they’re… blacks. Yeah.

Ricky! BUY SOME TEA. And I’d love to know places around NYC to purchase tea. Dean & Leluca apparently has Harney & Sons and the famous French blender Mariage Freres. There’s a place near me that sells Numi Tea, and Whole Foods has Rishi, Mighty Leaf, and The Republic of Tea. There’s also Radience Tea House and Subtle Tea here in NYC. Tavalon used to have a tea bar in Union Square but it closed and I’m not sure they’re opening it up again.

YES! :D It’s only 1-2 cups for each tea (although some people have gotten 3-4 cups out of it), and a lot of the teas have potential for multiple steepings. It’s exceedingly rare that you’d ever be able to taste a company’s entire catalog in one go, so it’s pretty exciting! :)

Yay! I love coercing people to join in the fun! All of the samples come in these heavy duty foil bags. Which is adorable, but a bit annoying at the same time, since you can’t sniff any of the teas without ripping the bags completely open. :( But there’s a full spread of every type of tea here, so I’m pretty excited. Man I love my boyfriend!

@ teaplz: I only re-steep certain whole-leaf black teas. The chinese blacks seem to hold up pretty well for a couple steeps (although not as long as other types of tea).

This was the first Yunnan that I had ever tasted and immediately became one of my favourites. I owe my love of Yunnan blacks to this tea. I still have a little bit of this to finish off and it’s been hard to re visit it incase it just isn’t what I remember it to be. I have tasted so many fine Yunnans that I’m afraid this will become meagre in comparison and I feel it still deserves a place in my heart.

A nice man called Philip is fixing my back gate after someone broke into my garden and completely busted the gate down in the process. Hopefully when I have enough money next year to buy a place it will be far away from this neighbourhood.

I’m pleased to say that this tea still holds up pretty well. It’s got the rich malt Yunnan taste but there is also a sweet, honeyed quality to this blend. Something that I could still drink every day. :)

Long live the Yunnan Jig.

Thanks Lala The garden is alright, had a few things (sweeping brush for one) broken and a lot of rubbish dumped but it’s nothing my husband can’t fix. A few hours when we get the time and it will be as good as new.

We were in a nicer area a couple of years ago and when my husband had cancer our landlord wanted to rip us off and charge extortionate rates so we had to move into the first place we could. We just didn’t know how bad it would be here. Well this time next year my husband would have saved roughly £8000 and my mother said she will give us another £5000 so we have enough deposit for a nice house in a nice area. I can’t wait. No more broken gates, no more poop on my doorstep, no more drunken arguments outside my door, no more of everything.

She did suggest sampler packs as well and I think they are a good way to go for trying several of their teas without spending a buttload of money right away :)

Oh thank you! Finally someone else who can find the smokiness in Yunnan! I think of it as sort of in the vein as Lapsang Souchong, only milder, but that if you don’t like one, chances are you won’t like the other either. I’ve stopped mentioning that because people kept looking funny and started talking about pepper. I can’t remember having found any pepper either. I was beginning to think my memory had been playing tricks on me.

Exactly! I had pepper on my pasta for lunch and it sure the heck didn’t taste anything like this tea does. It reminds me more of the Russian Caravan teas that I drink – although it has different undertones.

Has anyone — other than the guys who write the descriptions for the tea companies — ever tasted pepper or spice? With Yunnans, I taste maltiness and a caramel thing. But spice? I haven’t found one Yunnan that matches that description. I think we’re onto something here.

I have on occassion encountered something that I’ve described as having a spicey taste, but how we perceive flavour is so individual so that might easily be my own definition of a spicey taste that someone else would describe differently.

Sometimes I pick up a taste that tastes like my pepper mill smells. I assume that’s what they’re talking about and go ahead and call that ‘peppery’, but that’s the closest I’ve really gotten (because the way a pepper mill smells and tastes are two different things… not that I go around licking pepper mills or anything).

Another Jillian tea!

The leaves are pretty! They’re golden yellow, large and twisted. The smell mildly smokey. Long ago I had a Golden Yunnan that I thought was rather smokey in flavour, but since then whenever I’ve mentioned that I have been met with disbelief, until I finally began to think I was remembering it wrong since I seemed to be the only person in the world ever to have thought it was smokey. I’m also picking up a note of honey, a really flavourful kind of honey so strong that when you eat it you almost have to cough.

That note goes quite well with the honey-golden colour of the brew. The aroma after steeping is the same kind of honey, but not so much on the smoke. It’s just to throw you off, really. You almost expect to get a mouthful of liquid honey and instead you get a prickly mouthful of smoke. I still agree with myself that it’s a very smoky tea. I am getting a small note of honey, but not nearly to the extent that I would have thought from the aroma.

I’m trying to find the peppery note that people have been talking about and so far I’m failing. I get some pricklyness, but that’s from the smoke I think. I can’t find any pepper.

Back in ancient prehistoric times when I last had a plain yunnan, I remember not liking it much. I believe my tastes have changed. I think it’s a type I’ll have to stock up on again next year. It’s not one that I think is OMG fantastic! But it’s a nice one to have in the cupboard.

I think it’s probably the same flavour but recognise it differently. It was the same thing with the white cucumber I got from Ricky a few days ago. Others had found a cinnamon like flavour, but to me it was like a mouthful of dill.

I don’t know…I found some smoke flavor in the weaksauce yunnan I ordered the other day. It was on the tail end of the sip, and showed up primarily after the cup had cooled down. Now I’m going to have to make a cup of this and see if I can find the pepper in it.

Surely, there are Yunnan bud teas available over there — it’s Europe, the cradle of fine food and drink. Try Le Palais des Thes at www.palaisdesthes.com. They have a Bourgeons de Yunnan that’s an all-bud Yunnan. They’re French and they ship to the United States (and the French are so ambivalent about us Americans), so surely they’ll ship to Denmark. (You guys are such an uncontroversial lot, except of course when the local newspaper publishes a cartoon of Mohammed, but, hey, I digress.)

Anyway, Le Palais Des Thes, I think, even has a store in Oslo, so surely they can hurl a sample across the Skagerrak or the Kattegat, or whatever body of water it is that separates you guys.

I haven’t tried their Yunnan bud tea myself, but I bet it’s pretty good. I found a link, but it’s to the American version of their site.

I’ve always considered drinking a fine tea an affordable luxury, something that can be enjoyed for a fraction of the cost of a good wine. But at $40 for a shipment, I can see why you’d want to avoid American-based tea purveyors. And how’s the Euro against the dollar these days?

Ouch, couldn’t you just list it as a gift? Would you still have to pay customs for that? When I order stuff outside of the US that’s what companies usually list on the customs form.

I can’t, so far as I can see, control how they send it. And I’m not sure there wouldn’t still be VAT on it. On the other hand, I’m not particularly comfortable about the customs labels being fiddled with like that. I haven’t bought from Teaspring (who otherwise have very reasonable shipping!) since the time I ordered for some $75 tea, and when I got the package the customs label read ‘Contents: Card. Value $10’. I was lucky the customs people didn’t decide to try and open that one! O.o

I’ve had Adagio’s Yunnan Gold and enjoyed it so I was happy when I got a sample of this from the lovely teaplz.

When I poured the water over the leaves, it was like I had just opened a container of cocoa powder. Really strong. And nummy. The tea smells lovely, too. Not as cocoa-y as it was at first but sweet and faintly earthy. There’s something else, too, but I can’t figure out what it is. It’s sweet. I like it. Brown sugar maybe? Cane syrup? Something along those lines.

The taste is a little heavier and not quite as smooth as what I remember of Yunnan Gold. But it’s got a nice thickness to it and rich flavor that reinforces the cane syrup idea. There’s a little prickle on the end that I’d have to say is the peppery, but it’s not quite the white pepper I’d occasionally get from Yunnan Gold. Can’t say it is overly black pepper either but it is something. Almost an acidic aftertaste like coffee but not quite. A little roasty if I slurp. When I hold the tea in my mouth for a moment, some cocoa notes pop up which is really cool.

This tea is bolder than Yunnan Gold but I really like it. I’m having trouble giving it something below a 70 but it’s not quite a 4-star tea for me but rather a high 3. If this were at the store, I’d totally pick some up but I’m not sure if I’d go out of my way to order it.

ETA: I’m getting a pretty good caffeine rush from this one – it would be a good morning tea!

I got into work an hour early this morning because I have to leave early for a doctor appointment and of course the cafeteria isn’t open at this hour so I couldn’t get milk for my tea. I typically take most black teas with milk because I like the creamier taste and feel better than just plain. This first mug of my pot, I am drinking without milk. It tastes…sharper. Heavier. Just all around more strong and also quite a bit more…sour I guess is the word I’m looking for. I don’t enjoy the lingering aftertaste as much as normal.

It kind of seems like I’m having a straight-black-tea-a-thon lately, doesn’t it?

We received our black sampler from Adagio today, from the sneakpeeq deal with the IngenuiTea… so a big thank you to whomever posted that on the forums! I’d go look it up… but… no.

This is a very smooth tea with a dark, coppery color in the pot. The smell is… well… about what you expect from a straight black. The beverage itself has a somewhat medium weight to it, it isn’t thin by any means, but it doesn’t have that mealy thickness that some teas get. Not that mealy thickness is a bad thing, by any means.

There is a malty, light grainy flavor to the tea, with a somewhat noticeable honey flavor in the aftertaste. It’s a fairly solid tea, and I could see it being kept around. I would compare this to the tarantulas from Teavana that I have made a few times before (really, my only straight Yunnan comparison). I think the tarantulas were a slightly higher quality and richer flavored Yunnan than this one. Though, this isn’t a discontinued product… so it should probably* get a couple points for that.
