Iced Tea!

Brought some of my personal stash of this one with me to work to make a cup of it there because I was craving that sweet, smooth tropical fruit flavour! This was just a super satisfying drink, and really refreshing. Primary flavour was DT’s trademark passionfruit taste but there were apple undertones too and I even got some of the apricot in the blend as well! This is one that I’m actually really happy that I stocked up on!

Friendly reminder that I do not numerically rate DAVIDsTEA blends as I’m currently employed there and it would be an obvious conflict of interest. Any blends you see with numerical ratings were rated prior to my employment there. These reviews are a reflection of my personal thoughts regarding the teas, and not the company’s.

Had a pot of this one before bed a few nights ago.

Normally I’m really into this one, but maybe I just over did the steep or something ’cause this time around I found it almost sickly sweet and borderline generically fruity. I mean, a whole lot of apple and some pineapple notes but mostly just like a really sweet fruit syrup. Almost like the cocktail syrup in canned fruit cocktail? It was just a little too much right before bed.

Ironically I drank this blend at about midnight last night, as my last tea of the day.

It was quite nice though; and I mean it always is so I’m more pointing out its lovely consistency rather than saying so because it was any time of surprise. Lovely sweet, smooth milk chocolate/fudge notes with earthy and malty undertones and almost a sort of sweet, rum like undertone? Also a little nutty in the finish. Just a very good, well balanced dessert flavour overall though.

drank Angelwater by Silk Road

Midday tea earlier last week, meant to break up the several caffeinated teas I was drinking that day. It was soft, soothing and calming with A LOT of very sweet spearmint notes to it. That’s not a bad thing at all, I just know that there are quite a few different things in the blend so it’s always just a little weird when you get such a concentrated blast of one of those ingredients and not the other ones. I mean, I got a little lavender but honestly not a lot. Just TONS of spearmint.

First tea that I decided to crack into from my AQTT Black Friday order! And how could I not, with a name like George Daddy!? I mean, where does a name like that even come from?

I tried this one hot because while I’m sure it would make a lovely iced tea something about it seemed better suited to me as a hot drink. I also did half the cup straight, and half the cup with added in milk. I enjoyed it both ways, but I think I liked it just slightly more with a touch of milk.

As a straight tea, there was just this thinness to it both in flavour and in mouthfeel. I mean, still pretty delicious with milk chocolate/fudge sort of notes and a really sweet banana flavour! The banana reminded me heavily of the banana flavoured Penicillin medicine or those spongey banana marshmallow candies. Just wicked sweet and artificial, but also so, so good. Together, the chocolate and banana was a little banana split like, also. I didn’t really taste the graham, to be honest. I also thought the oolong wasn’t particularly oolong-like? Maybe that’s why VariaTEA liked it though, since she doesn’t love oolongs. For me, it was more like a really light bodied/weak black tea base.

With milk, I just felt like some of the ‘gaps/thinness was filled out a bit more and it made for a profile that felt just a touch more complete/whole. The mouthfeel was thicker, and there was some creaminess in the flavour with compensated for the thinner base, and strengthened that Banana Split sort of imagery. It was more satisfying, not that it was bad on its own. Actually, it was still pretty great straight – this was just a hair better. I’m definitely excited to drink more of this though because I see it being an EXCELLENT dessert tea option!

drank Coco Colada by DAVIDsTEA

I always forget that this tea is a thing, and that I have a fair bit of it left at home…

Found it while doing a stash reorg. earlier in the week with my little sister; we were trying to make more storage space for some of the incoming Black Friday/Cyber Monday stuff, and this one was shoved way in the back of my herbal teas section. I made a hot cup, and it was delightful! I mean, not surprisingly – I love pineapple teas and pina colada flavours are even better and that’s basically what this one is. A really rich, sweet and bright pina colada with subtle apple/mango touches. It just feels like it’s been so long since revisiting this one…

Cold brew!

I wasn’t as crazy about this one initially as I was about the Peaches & Cream from Sloane. For starters, it’s very jasmine heavy and I wouldn’t mind that so much if it weren’t for the obvious fact that jasmine is coming from the green tea in the blend, and not on its own or with the white tea. I don’t mind a little green tea added into a white tea blend (like DT’s Cherry Blossom, for example) when the primary base flavour is STILL the white tea but this felt like more of a green tea to me.

It’s also really ginger heavy, and I hadn’t really realized there would be so much ginger flavour when I purchased this. Like, I knew I was gambling with the jasmine notes but my assumption was that the citrus/pink lemonade elements would outweigh any potential ginger notes and I actually thought that the citrus was the mildest flavour out of all of them. So I was disappointed. I mean, I’m not writing it off or anything – I definitely need to try it hot and experiment a little before I come to any sort of definitive conclusion. It just wasn’t the most thrilling/exciting first tasting.

Looking at my queue of tasting notes from the week, I think clearly what I was really in the mood for this week was August Uncommon teas. Not that weird truffle one that Dexter was on about though; I have a sample of that one but I think I’ll be staying away from it for a while…

This was actually quite lovely though; it was very smooth with some great milk chocolate/cocoa powder notes to it and a nice malty backbone to the sip. I mean, I pretty straight forward and basic flavour profile overall but I definitely still enjoyed it a lot.

Sil

how did you steep this if you remember, since it was forever ago? haha

Roswell Strange

I don’t 100% remember, but it was likely 95C water for four minutes since that’s usually my default for all black tea.

I’m really, really trying to have an open mind when drinking these sort of green teas since I know they’re something that usually isn’t up my alley, but it’s very hard for me when they taste like this one. I mean, I totally think you’d be all over this if you liked green tea but for me it was just so insanely buttery with these really thick, robust creamed spinach and seaweed notes that I just could NOT get into.

Not for me.

This one smelled so rose heavy and floral when it was dry, and even as it was steeping but when I took the first few sips of it that lovely rose was gone! Ahh! I mean, it’s still a nice shou but I want the rose. What’s the secret? How do I get it to taste like rose consistently!?

Profile

Bio

Hello! My name is Kelly, though many people in the tea community call me Ros or Roswell.

I am a mid-twenties tea addict, blogger, and all around nerd. I grew up in the Prairies, but a few years ago I relocated to Quebec to pursue a career with DAVIDsTEA in the tea industry! I’m still working on getting my French language skills down…

My first introduction to tea, in any form outside of instant and bottled iced tea, was about seven years ago when I happened to stumble upon DAVIDsTEA while looking for a birthday present for a friend! I tried their Birthday Cake rooibos blend, and I’ve been hooked on tea ever since! In those seven years; I was introduced to the online tea community, expanded my interest in flavoured teas to include a deep love and appreciation for straight teas and traditional brewing methods, got a tea themed tattoo, started reviewing teas, amassed a sizable tea and teaware collection, became a TAC certified Tea Sommelier, & even came full circle by beginning a career in the tea industry with DAVIDsTEA!

I consider myself a Jack of all Teas, and strive to have a knowledge and appreciation of all tea types, formats, and styles of drinking. I don’t like to feel boxed in to just being a “flavoured tea” or “straight tea” drinker – my expectations may vary depending on the type of tea or how it’s been processed/prepared but if it’s good tea, it’s good tea no matter how it’s been made!

You name it, I probably drink it- and I’ll absolutely try anything at least once.

My default method of preparation is hot, Western style, and straight – but I’m not opposed to additions if I’m in the right mood. If I ever add something to a tea or use a different method of preparation I will ALWAYS call it out in the tasting note though.

I like to listen to music when drinking tea, especially when I’m brewing a large pot at a time or steeping Gongfu. Often I curate very intentional tea and music pairings, and sometimes I share them here in my tasting reviews. Music is something that I find can deeply affect the experience of having tea.

I’m also one half of the “tea and fandom” podcast GeekSteep where, weekly, we discuss newly explored fandoms over tea as well as try to figure out the perfect tea to pair with each fandom. You can find us on Spotify and Apple & Google podcasts.

Favourite flavour notes/ingredients: Pear, lychee, cranberry, cream, melon, pineapple, malt, roasty, petrichor, sweet potato, heady florals like rose, hazelnut or walnut, sesame, honey (in moderation), and very woody shou.

Least favourite flavour notes/ingredients:
Lemongrass, ginger, strongly spiced profiles (and most Chai in general), mushrooms, seaweed, chamomile, stevia, saltiness or anything that reminds me too much of meat that isn’t supposed to taste like meat…

Currently exploring/obsessed with: Sheng from Yiwu, Yancha (Qilan in particular), anything with a strong sweet potato note. Also, I need to try ALL the root beer teas! Searching for a really good caramel flavoured blend, ideally with a black tea base.

Please contact me at the instagram account listed below if you would like me to review your teas.

Currently I’m employed in the tea department of the DAVIDsTEA head office. While I’m still sharing my own personal thoughts on new & existing DAVIDsTEA blends, I am no longer numerically rating them due to the obvious conflict of interest. Any comments expressed are a reflection of my own thoughts and opinions, and do not reflect the thoughts and opinions of the company. Any DAVIDsTEA blends you currently see with a numeric score were reviewed prior to my being hired there and have not been adjusted since becoming a DAVIDsTEA employee.
