25 Tasting Notes

this tea smells great, tastes great too. it smells of coco and malt in a compost kind of way.. not a bad thing. it tastes like it smells imo. it yeilds a nice reddish color. its not as thick as i would like in the mouthfeel. ive had this tea for a while, drank it once or twice in the past, now i review. theres a noticeable watery, slightly acidic dimention to this one. i dont remember this tea being like this in the past.. still good but maybe my temp shouldnt be 90C, idk.

i just steeped it again for less time and that undernote is less pronounced. this is the third steep. i used 6g for a 130ml pot. its a good black, would probably buy again, or something similar.

i like wp’s jabberwocky more though.

this tea comes off as mild in astringency/bitterness. its creamy/buttery i find; i often like teas like this, but sometimes i want the hard “sour-ish” taste. i went into this wanting the sour but got soft flavor.. which i dont mind at all.

the liquor is a nice deep amber color on the 2nd steep. some astringency appears, but not much, just enough to feel activity on the tongue. im feeling surprisingly lit up with qi already- right behind the eyes and in my face. it smells similar to what the inside of a ping-pong ball smells like. my nose is starting to run.

3rd steep and yea theres something medicinal about this one, chemical and milk combined, and probably some sort of dry dry hay or pale grass where it hasnt rained in almost a month in the dead of summer and the heat seems to radiate up from the ground. take that and add some dandelions for florals and you have 2004 Yangpinhao.

good enough but i dont expect to buy this one again.

i ordered this one at the same time i ordered my strainer from ys (i seemed to have lost my old strainer in moving, but this one is far finer and wider.) shipping came fast so thank you ys. this tea is supposed to be a mutated da hong pao, which i find amusing, and it interested me enough to try it.

ive only ever tried one other dhp, from whispering pines (the wild crafted,) so i cant pick apart the differences too easily but i’ll try.

my wildcrafted stuff is nearly finished and all thats left is small leaves with some tea scraps. the que she though, is laden with full leaves which when smelled delivers a strong dark chocolate aroma.. its really nice.
at this point im on my second steep of about 8 sec and honestly i cant really tell what im tasting, maybe cacao.. some sort of sweetness in. lemon! thats part of it. the mouthfeel is weak and i think its because of this acidic quality of the tea.. like it fills your mouth and then circles around the sip and clears out the body from the surface of your mouth.

third steep in and im picking up some nuttiness, like roasted almonds. the acidity has died down. This is no doubt a mutation of dhp.. less oxidized, soup is lighter color if i recall. The leaf in pot smells more like dhp, but tastewise- no, not totally. i like it and i’ll see how many more steeps i can get from it. i also am loving this strainer- nothing gets through it !!!

k one more steep (4th.) when i smell the cup of tea something makes me pick up frosting, like from frosted flakes, also clean spring water and leaves. the tea has gotten bolder and the sip leaves me with sandpaper tongue slightly.

thanks if you read this.. i know my reviews are pretty scattered around and impromptu.

mrmopar

Nothing wrong with being impromptu.

i dont know why this is so bitter, but it is, and it seems to draw the moisture from my mouth. i used 3g in a 60ml gaiwan which may be too much, however this is the first steep.

it smells of campfire, menthol, molasses, and seaweed.
second steep and the taste is really harsh; my whole mouth feels dry and pasty. i need milk- i dont even drink milk, but i need it to put out the fire in my mouth. if theres any upside to this tea right now, its the qi im feeling even with such a small quantity. Im just going to sit through this.

on a good note, ive just set up my tea space again after a year or so so now i can gong fu. im at a new apartment too and my room is a good size. unfortunately my tea table must also be used for my painting spot which takes priority in this case so i may have to move tea spot to the dining room table.

leaves have opened up now after maybe the 7th steep, and the brew is actually sweeter and more bearable. and wow i feel kind of stoned. just staring out the window, feeling the buzz.

ok the bitter has died right down. i feel a slight cooling of the mouth on inhales.. pretty nice. thats it im done with this review. this tea is like a chinese finger trap, once you’re in you dont get out.

i bought two cakes of this tea just based on the hope that it was similar to the mirkwood blend.. and it is. its very smooth and easy to drink lots of i find- its my favorite shou ive tried so far. even without the mushroom morsels its very “mushroomy.” i think i could have brewed it longer than 4 min to get a richer, darker brew, that would help me pick up flavours in its true form. its almost syrupy with some coco/caramel stuff going on. im also drinking this out of my new mug i got for xmas- it looks sort of rustic with white lining the inside so i can see the teas colors better. good qi to if i m not mistaken, even though i havnt drunk much yet.
anyways thanks for reading and happy teaing and happy new year.

oh yes this can be drunk daily. this is a good value sheng. at first smell of the dry leaf i wasnt sure if id like it.. but the brew is sweet in that raw type of way, slightly grassy with the pure tour de force of sheng which hangs in the mouth after drinking. i see a possible cake in my future. i can be picky with sheng, and although its not like the 2015 bosch i had yesterday, it still hits the spot. i want another pot.

i received this sample from mrmopar. on the label it says shou at the end, but this sheng is all i could find on the site.. typo maybe? im almost positive this is a sheng, and by sight you would agree. the dry leaf smells great with sour to sweet or sweet to sour, on the inhale. broken up i see the leaves are full and intact, the same as when wet.. they just open up into leaves.
the brew is a lot like the aroma, i mean it is s&s with astringency, its sort of delicate and subtle as well. i hope the cold brew brings out more sweetness. i dont know what it is today, but im somewhat underwhelmed by this tea.. its still drinkable, and maybe ill get some cha qi in the process. seaweed & sand, seaweed & sand. i dont hate it though, i like the small bite it has on the tongue. again western style, so this review may be useless.. oh well. adios

this one really does taste like hay, which surprised me because the smell was rich and sugary. i get mostly dryness from this and not much else. i know right away this wont be a favorite, or even a daily drinker, its just to plain. it doesnt even taste like the tobacco i smoked earlier; i thought it would be a nice follow up, but no. i think ill be tossing the rest of this even though i hate to waste tea. that is all, g’day.

i should note, i drank this western style tho.

this tea punches me in the face a bit, with some sour/bitter sweetness. im not sure what to say about this tea, it tastes low-key. i think it smells a little like fern plants and tastes like sandalwood. there is some citrus that comes at you with a dry bite to it. this is another tea mrmopar sent me and its unlike any other sheng ive tried so far.. its kind of offensive but in a good way.
