I found a sealed 50g bag of this living in the back of my tea cupboard, so whisked some up today and gave it another chance. The first time I tried it, I was not expecting the powdery mouthfeel from the beetroot powder and the fact that the green tea taste is just completely absent. I had brewed some up in my DT matcha maker while at university one day and ended up dumping it because I could not get over the bitter Kool-Aid flavour.
This time I armed myself with the knowledge from my last experience and whisked up a cup of this with a little bit of rock sugar to take the edge off that bitter orange flavour. I still find the orange flavouring alarmingly synthetic, almost like orange Jello, but the addition of some rock sugar made it much more tolerable. I think it’s important to note that I can taste the beet powder in this, I noticed that it has the same flavour profile as Just Beet It. If you liked that, you probably won’t mind this!
The colour of this is so weird! I hate how the froth on top of my bowl was brown, not a gorgeous green like other matcha. Davids Tea must’ve been going through an alternative phase when they developed this… I like to imagine that they wanted to make an “edgy” tea that looks like old blood.
