From DAVIDsTEA

Just because this matcha is unsweetened, doesn’t mean it won’t wake up your tastebuds. With a zesty orange twist and a natural sweetness (thanks beetroot), it’s the freshest way to sip the benefits of stone-ground green tea. Colourful and packed with bright juicy flavours, it’s our new favourite way to wake up in the morning.

Matcha green tea, beetroot juice powder (beetroot juice from concentrate, maltodextrin, salt, citric acid), strawberry powder (strawberry, maltodextrin, citric acid), natural orange flavouring.

Price per 50g: $11.98

I found a sealed 50g bag of this living in the back of my tea cupboard, so whisked some up today and gave it another chance. The first time I tried it, I was not expecting the powdery mouthfeel from the beetroot powder and the fact that the green tea taste is just completely absent. I had brewed some up in my DT matcha maker while at university one day and ended up dumping it because I could not get over the bitter Kool-Aid flavour.

This time I armed myself with the knowledge from my last experience and whisked up a cup of this with a little bit of rock sugar to take the edge off that bitter orange flavour. I still find the orange flavouring alarmingly synthetic, almost like orange Jello, but the addition of some rock sugar made it much more tolerable. I think it’s important to note that I can taste the beet powder in this, I noticed that it has the same flavour profile as Just Beet It. If you liked that, you probably won’t mind this!

The colour of this is so weird! I hate how the froth on top of my bowl was brown, not a gorgeous green like other matcha. Davids Tea must’ve been going through an alternative phase when they developed this… I like to imagine that they wanted to make an “edgy” tea that looks like old blood.

I LOVE this one! It did not start as love at first sip, but I have learned to adore it made as a matcha lemonade. It recently went on sale and I ordered 750g of it for fear of running out! I really wished that they would not retire so many teas.

I finally got the chance to try a cup of this to go – also purchased 50g. Definitely not sweetened, haha. But I wanted it plain so I could get the full taste effect. I taste the orange flavours, not so much the strawberry. This really reminds me of the pu’erh tea ‘Juicy Orange’, which I wasn’t a fan of for it’s weird aftertaste – but this is drinkable. I was drawn to it because it’s the first red-ish matcha I’ve tried, and I could smell the orange citrus notes in it. I think what would make this better would be adding lemonade like they suggested, or adding the matcha to a smoothie. :) I will definitely make use of what I got. Interesting tea.

So because I am very, very much not a morning person I have reverted back into my old morning routine of prepping all my stuff the night before (lunch, shower, work clothing, travel mug & tea that I intend to steep for the commute, etc.) so that I can wake up as late as humanly possible before I have to boogie on out of my apartment to catch the metro. I’ve gotten it down to about fifteen minutes awake and in the apartment before I leave to walk to the metro station…

Part of this “morning routine” now include bringing everything I need to make breakfast with me to the office and making breakfast there and eating it at my desk. Ultra efficiency! A few days ago, breakfast of choice was oatmeal – and because I’m in a lab surrounded by tea I thought it would be interesting to try adding matcha into the oatmeal and see if that made it better. I think I may have done this in the past, but more with “sprinkling” the matcha on top and less with mixing it directly into the oatmeal? I’m not totally sure though – don’t quote me on that.

I was having peach oatmeal though, so I thought either a fruity matcha would work well or the vanilla matcha – and the first thing I saw was the sunset matcha which seemed to make sense in my head. I mean, it’s basically a strawberry matcha and strawberries and peaches go together, right? It actually did taste really nice as a pairing, I was just clearly a little heavy handed with how much matcha I added in (three perfect matcha spoons of it). Like, the strawberry notes were just so strong. I think two spoons would have been the perfect balance, actually!

But 10/10 in terms of concept. Would t-oatmeal again.

Friendly reminder that I do not numerically rate DAVIDsTEA blends as I’m currently employed there and it would be an obvious conflict of interest. Any blends you see with numerical ratings were rated prior to my employment there. These reviews are a reflection of my personal thoughts regarding the teas, and not the company’s.

Sounds like a good idea! I struggle with mornings too, and even though I prefer tea always, I usually go for coffee in the morning for the caffeine boost as I can’t function enough to properly prepare matcha. This could do it!!
