89 Tasting Notes

My one-liner for this tea would be In-your-face malty & astringent.

It didn’t seem so bad when I took the first sip, which was mainly a bready malty sweetness with a full mouthfeel in the top to mid notes, but the end notes are drying and astringent.

The full intensity in the first infusion is quite something – enough to wake me up of a sleep deprived stupor. But wait patiently for the second infusion which is perfect – a balance of malty yet mild sweetness; astringency & dryness much reduced

Incredibly sweet, with very light vegetal notes. Easy to drink, refreshing type of tea.

Purchased a small sample of this at the Toronto Tea Festival but could not resist sampling at the booth itself multiple times…:D

My first green puer cake…excited and yet nervous about messing any of the prep up.

Read through the website, did my first 15 sec steep, so this is the second infusion of 20 sec steep. Its very light, some faint barnyard notes and vegetal notes.

Third infusion is definitely getting more intense in colour, did this for 30 sec steep. Flavour is more potent, also beginning to feel some dryness at the end.

Out of curiosity I tasted the first infusion that you’re supposed to discard…and yep, its definitely not meant to be drank at all :P Very barnyard-y and nothing else.

Remaining infusions to be continued separately…

Second infusion report: The sweetness is definitely more muted, but still no denying that intense maltiness in the flavour. Astringency is more pronounced this round, thats the downside of it. I couldn’t stop smelling the tea and the leaves though…reminds me of malt chocolate drinks like Horlicks.

Had a sample of this tea today. The dry leaf didn’t smell remarkable to me, but once steeped, the leaves smell intensely malty, similar to how a craft brewery smells.
The tea liquid was a heady mix of sweet, malty, almost milky flavour. The fullness of the flavour just hits you in the face like…a cashmere scarf – in a good way, not like the way other hard objects do :P
The only thing I didn’t like about this tea was the finish, it felt somewhat dry and astringent. Still, that didn’t stop me from making 2 infusions.

Flavors: Malt, Sweet Potatoes, Yeasty

TGIF! Definitely made a healthy dent in this stash this week – I’m a little sad I left it at work now, gotta find another tea while I’m working this weekend. The more I drink it, the more I notice the chocolate notes, its interesting how a tea develops in your perception of it each time you drink it.

Steeped a teapot of this for the weekly Sunday Netflix binge. I added more chrysanthemum separately to supplement the lack of it in this ‘blend’. Had a heavy turkey dinner tonight (bought 2 turkeys on sale during the holidays so this was to use up the last one…lol). This was great to wash it down, including the dessert of vanilla mochi ice cream.

Ah I can’t wait to have space for a separate freezer so I can take more advantage of $0.99/lb turkeys around the holidays.

Brewed this at 2x strength = half the amount of water, then added heated milk to bring the ratio back to 1×. Much better than the last time I tried it. I think its best suited for either breakfast / afternoon tea with milk, rather than straight.

Really easy, drinkable tea. Its kind of like green tea aromatherapy since the pineapple is purely flavour with no chunks. See previous note on this tea.

Water wasn’t as hot as I’d like but still made a decent cup of tea, at least i could drink it right away. Trying to finish this tea as its one of the older ones in my cupboard.

finding myself in hot water again and again…

I grew up in a tea drinking culture, but my parents were seriously hung up on jasmine tea and oolong tea, so I never really had much exposure to other teas. My horizons expanded when I moved to Japan and discovered genmaicha (roasted rice tea aka popcorn tea). after that, I discovered black teas, red teas, and flavoured teas, how different teas could be by the region, processing methods, water used.

Now I can’t get enough of it!

I experiment with different teas, blending them sometimes to see what the outcome would be. I find my tastes to be quite diverse, but run away from the more floral side of things. Tie Kwan Yin is probably the only one that most people seem to enjoy, that I don’t. Otherwise I am game for most teas. Fruity? love it. Smoky? Mmm. Earthy? bring it on! Light and vegetal? keep pouring!
