drank Cotton Candy by DAVIDsTEA
1792 tasting notes

This morning’s cold brew. I actually don’t mind this one. It’s sweet but not uncontrollably so when prepared this way. Now that I think of it, this tastes like the candy shells of Smarties (the Canadian ones!).

Cameron B.

Are they basically the same thing as M&M’s?

Anlina

They’re very similar in that they’re milk chocolate covered with a candy shell, but they have a distinctly different flavour than M&Ms, and the slightly different shape and ratio of candy shell to chocolate gives them a different texture to.

VariaTEA

They are similar but I think the smartie shell is harder (not that that information is relevant in regards to this tasting note)

Fjellrev

Basically. The chocolate tastes a little different, and they have a thicker candy shell. Most people tend to prefer Smarties, especially for the chocolate-to-shell ratio. :)

OMGsrsly

Smarties contain wheat flour. :(

numbrsix

Do you have any extra Cotton Candy you would want to sell or trade? I’m on a hunt for a friend’s XMas present.

Fjellrev

I’m so sorry! I actually have one serving left and just happened to put it into the fridge this morning to cold steep. Hope you’ll be able to find some for your friend.

numbrsix

Aww, no worries! Thanks for your kind response! I’ll keep hunting.

drank Eggnog by DAVIDsTEA
1792 tasting notes

I see where you were coming from with this one, David, I really do. Nutmeg, nutmeg, some white chocolate, then some more nutmeg. The first sip was dat nutmeg, so you successfully made me associate this tea with eggnog with the snap of a finger.

But we’re talking about Scum Ring City here, which I was anticipating just merely looking at the white chocolate chips in here. For the love of… the liquor was so murky that I thought I was about to experience sewer water.

After about 1/4 of the way through my Nordic mug, there was no way I was going to be able to finish this on its own. So I grabbed that light egg nog out of my fridge like no one’s business and topped this freakshow off with it. Much better. It helped balance the oiliness and ultra sweetness from the melted white chocolate chips.

Never going back there.

Sip down. I now officially only have my Violet tea from last year’s S&V order. Go team.

Cameron B.

Hah! Cookies and I were just talking about S&V on the discussion boards. :P

Fjellrev

Honestly, in retrospect, their teas were kind of a disappointment. They’re cheap, but for a reason, in my opinion. There were a couple that I enjoyed, but still, there are better teas out there. Plus I find they don’t hold their flavour too well. Hope I’m not being a Debbie Downer!

Cameron B.

No, you’re totally fine. I’ve tried a couple of their teas and not been terribly impressed, but I feel like I might as well give them a try when they’re only $4 for 2 ounces. :P

Fjellrev

Yeah that is what sold me on it too. I’ll admit I ended up throwing out a couple when they got old and stale but I didn’t feel bad because of the price.

Cameron B.

Exactly! And some of them sound like they have potential. <3

Kittenna

LOL! I have Cinnamon Chocolate Brownie, Root Beer, Violet (omggggggg I wish I’d known you were getting it, you could have had mine), and Ginger Pear left from an order two years ago. Sigh.

Fjellrev

Haha aww, I’m impressed you are still holding onto them. Here it’s been only a year for me and I’ve resorted to using the trash can on a couple already. While I like the Violet, it’s still been a hassle to finish.

FWIW, the ones I’d say are most worthwhile to try are Root Beer, Caramel, and Gingerbread if you haven’t tried those yet, Cameron. :)

Cameron B.

Fjellrev, have you tried any of the holiday blends, specifically St. Nick’s or Winter Wonderland?

Fjellrev

I haven’t, but now that I’m looking at the ingredients, I’m shocked I didn’t get them! They sound pretty good, but I’m not sure if I would have liked them in the end since I learned that I don’t care for their chocolate flavouring. I heard that Candy Cane is pretty good, that is, if you don’t mind stevia. And I almost forgot that I enjoyed their Coconut Macaroon green rooibos.

OMGsrsly

I liked the gingerbread!

drank Chocolate Mint Rooibos by Zen Tea
1792 tasting notes

Sad sip down. This tea is pretty much award-winning in two ways: for being pretty much the best flavoured rooibos I’ve ever had, and for being pretty much the best chocolate mint tea I’ve ever had. I say pretty much just to leave a little wiggle room there, of course.

I just got back from grocery shopping and was so preoccupied that I grabbed my 1 litre of light eggnog, opened the sealed tab, and nearly poured it into this tea rather than grabbing the 1 litre of light cream. Thankfully I noticed just as I was about to pour. Don’t think that would have been a good combination!

yyz

So agree with you. Thisone is really good!

Fjellrev

It’s amazing how low their prices are considering how many awesome blends they carry, too.

drank Apple Custard by DAVIDsTEA
1792 tasting notes

Screw you, DAVIDsTEA, for sucking me in with your buy two get one free tea offers today. I came in only to try out an Apple Custard eggnog latte, and grab a bit of the Eggnog to try, but ended up taking home tins of the Glow, Apple Custard, and Redberry Tonic. In the end, it was a great deal since I love the Glow and go through Redberry Tonic faster since I cold brew it anyway.

This was delicious as an eggnog latte. However, I didn’t taste much of the tea, as I find this one to be on the delicate side. The apple and vanilla in this rather complemented the more domineering spices in the eggnog base.

OMGsrsly

Ohh, Redberry Tonic. I need to put a cold brew on now. Thanks for the reminder! :D

Fjellrev

Aerial high five!

OMGsrsly

I’ve been drinking it today, and yeah this is SO good.

Fjellrev

Ha, me too. Actually, I’m drinking it right now. Hope they’ll keep it around. :)

Cachou972

Eggnog lattes, YUM!! I’m intrigued by this tea but I wonder if it’s similar to Forever Nuts?

OMGsrsly

IMO the only similarity is that there’s apple in both teas.

Cachou972

Haha ok. I’ll try to get a small pouch of it next time I’m at Davids… There is a picture of an apple pie on the site for this tea so I was hoping it would taste like an apple pastry but people say it’s more like apple cider…

Fjellrev

Oh yeah, I can see how you would initially think the would be similar. Sniffing my 100g tin now, the two share similar creamy notes. But they’re still different in that Apple Custard is more vanilla-y, and the chamomile really switches things up too. I don’t even view it as an apple tea, to be honest. :)

Cachou972

Mmm.. Now I really want to try this tea! I love vanilla and creamy teas in general. thanks for the description! :)

Kittenna

Also, Forever Nuts is quite cinnamony. No cinnamon in Apple Custard. I’d strongly recommend trying it if you like vanilla/creamy and can tolerate chamomile (it’s not overly strong, but if you hate it you may notice it).

Cachou972

Good to know… I’m not a big fan of cinnamon so I don’t think I will miss it. I also wanted to try Bubbie’s Baklava but then I saw many people say it’s very heavy on the cinnamon so I’m playing safe! Now I just need an excuse to buy more tea. I placed a big Davids order right before they made their buy 2 get one free tin offer, sight!!

Ohh, I quite like this one. It’s a safe cold brew, meaning that it doesn’t go wonky on you, the hibiscus isn’t too crazily tart, yet it’s not special or particularly unique since this is a berry profile I’ve experienced in the past from other companies such as Bayswater and maybe even Tea Desire. I get primarily strawberry, rose hip, and a hint of hibiscus.

Such a thirst quencher. I’m thirsty and anxiously waiting for my brown basmati rice to cook. Two cups already gone.

drank Earl Grey Cream by Zen Tea
1792 tasting notes

Yesterday evening, I thought of the awesome sale that Zen had right after the New Year, and how I just had to pick up a lovely tin of this. I realized, whoa, that was almost a year ago already. And I barely touched this even though I absolutely love it. What gives?

So here I am sipping on a gigantic cup with light cream and vanilla extract. The dry leaf still smells almost as fragrant and delicious as it did the day I received it. But I still need to have this more often!

drank Bee Pollen Matcha by Matcha Outlet
1792 tasting notes

Muchly needed sip down. I still have quite a bit of French Vanilla to work on before justifying making another RLT order. I have an old coupon/gift certificate which I really hope is still valid.

If I play my cards right, maybe I’ll be able to make one by late spring or summer.

Morning cup because I realized that I really need to work on some of these older teas, especially straight blacks, in order to make room for the straight blacks I’m getting in from Teavivre. Keep the line moving, yo.

Starch and sweeter wood notes from this one. I like but I’m not completely blown away.

Wow, Swedish Chef, you fell asleep at the stovetop. I was sorting through my Butiki teas and couldn’t find this one anywhere. Then, I realized that I drank this without ever writing about it. Probably because I was all whimperingly nervous and scared that I could never do this tea justice or something, so I kept hopelessly crying in my lutfisk and procrastinating.

Very unhelpful note to passersby who wonder what this tea was all about (was, how sad) but clearly my tardiness with providing a more qualitative description is a sign that it was indeed good. Great. Fantastic even.

Exit stage left.

Stephanie

hahhaha, I like the note though :)
