1792 Tasting Notes

Thanks to Angel for generously sending me an oolong sample package! I have been rather curious about a few of these for quite a while now, but admittedly kept stalling on ordering since I’ve been waiting for the black pearls to go back in stock. Her generous offer actually sparked me to go ahead and make an order the other day, anyway. :)

This is a wonderfully delicate and light oolong. I’ve only steeped this once, but so far, I’m picking up on sweet floral notes nuttiness. As this cools, the nuttiness is overpowering the floralness.

Mmm, there is a bit of creaminess there too.

I’d talk about subsequent steeps but I’m about to indulge in some Tikka Masala, which will clearly cloud my judgement.

Looking forward to trying the others, and of course, to get my BF parcel in the mail.

Cameron B.

I want the Black Dragon Pearls and the Bai Hao as well! :(

Fjellrev

You know it! I’ve yet to try Bai Hao but it looks so rich and roasty.

drank Vanilla Cacao by Tisano
1792 tasting notes

Sample time! This was a rather unusual blend, but in a good way. The vanilla lent a smooth creaminess to the cacao husks, and the rooibos peaked through juuust a bit. The resulting flavour? Something akin to Tootsie Rolls.

Cameron B.

Yum, I want Tootsie Roll tea! :P I’ll have to keep this in mind.

Fjellrev

Funny, I used to hate Tootsie Rolls when I was a kid but this was a pleasant surprise. I would have gladly sent you some had I bought a full tin. :)

Cameron B.

I love Tootsie Rolls. :P I’ll have to order some samples, I’d like to try the Original and Mint versions too. And that Green Cacao tea looks interesting!

Sil

haha tootsie rolls are yum.

Fjellrev

Oh yeah, the green was out of stock when I ordered. :/ Looks really good. I still need to get off my butt and review the others. I’ll already say that their chai cacao is my favourite.

Cameron B.

I’m not a big fan of chai, but I’d probably order samples of all of them. And email them to see if they’d do a sample of Green Cacao so I didn’t have to buy a full tin. :P

Kittenna

Green cacao? Intrigued! Weird that this blend has rooibos though. I’d probably prefer straight cacao with vanilla.

Fjellrev

Not sure what dragonwell and cacao husks would be like, so it’s too bad that they don’t offer samples of it.

I was surprised that they would put rooibos in this too, and would have preferred it without too, but it wasn’t as woodsy as I thought it would be.

drank Rose by Janet's Special Teas
1792 tasting notes

Onwards with the sip downs. This cup was better than the last. I didn’t steep it for as long so that must have done the trick. Now the rose is stronger whilst the base isn’t as loud and astringent. It’s winning more at life this way.

If I were ever craving rose tea and didn’t have a better one around, I could definitely see myself making a trip up to Janet’s and grabbing some more of this.

drank Hello Sweetie by Butiki Teas
1792 tasting notes

Classic me, drinking nearly the entire pouch of tea yet not writing about it until I’m already on the last cup. I was excited about this one because as most people know, I’m ever so slightly obsessed with coconut, and banana chips are addictive as hell. Oh, and Assam? My favourite black tea. So ideally, this should be a winner.

Yet somehow I’m not that excited about it? The coconut is nice, but rather faint. I think the main problem is that my palate isn’t finding that these flavours mesh well together. Something doesn’t fit. It kind of reminds me of Foxy Roxy’s, but man, that one just works. It’s packed full of flavour and there’s a harmony there that this one is lacking.

Come to think of it, the coconut in this reminds me of the coconut that David’s uses in blends like Stormy Night, which I’m not really crazy over. Maybe that’s another subconscious issue I’m having with this.

I mean, it’s good, but there are so many better Butiki blends out there, IMHO. This just makes me want to grab a cup of Foxy Roxy’s!

drank Maple Pecan Oolong by Butiki Teas

Goodbye, my beautiful, luscious friend. :(

Stephanie

Oh my gosh, I will never taste this one again :( :( :(

Stephanie

Oh my gosh, I will never taste this one again :( :( :(

Kittenna

I either am done with this one, or have a cup or so left. Luckily for me, though, it was never an absolute favourite.

Fjellrev

And that’s how I felt about Creamy Eggnog. We balance the world out. :)

Kittenna

Excellent!

OMGsrsly

Aww. :(

And here’s another example of how the last cup tasted the best! Must seriously be due to the flavour dust left at the bottom of the pouch. Mmm. What a beautiful, natural, healthy dessert tea.

Sip downs are bittersweet since I’m always trying to keep my stash down, yet especially sad when I finish off a Butiki tea for obvious reasons. OBVI.

Sil

i probably can send you more of this

Fjellrev

Nah, it’s cool, but thanks for thinking of me! It’s great but not one that I would have repurchased anyway, if that makes sense.

Sil

yeah heh

Kittenna

I still haven’t tried this properly. I bought an extra bag of it on spec, and think I like it, but I’m not sure! Haha.

Fjellrev

Haha yeah I bought it only because it was shiny and new. Maybe my tastebuds are whiny, but I found it really difficult to get the flavours out.

Now for some cold brew to wash down some of that lingering pu-erh flavour.

In a nutshell, this basically tastes like Rockets (or Smarties as they’re called in ‘Murca). To non-North Americans, it’s basically like powdery fruity candy. The apple is one of the strongest notes, followed by berry (this has blackberry in it but it doesn’t distinctly taste like blackberry), and the hibiscus is on the light side. Not crazily tart at all. It’s one of those teas that while you’ll enjoy drinking it, its not a repurchase.

Still anxiously awaiting an email from Bare Minerals, especially since the parcel is already back in their city. I’m worried that by the time they get to my email, it may be too late and they would have already dismantled the parcel or something. Makes me want to just call them but that would be very expensive.

Cameron B.

Aw, “Rockets” is far cuter. I will now call them that forever. :)

Sil

ROCKETS….

Kittenna

Speaking of rockets, I just found like 7 rolls of them in my boyfriend’s cupboard. I think they are 2 years old. Ick.

Fjellrev

Yech, run away. True story, one time in grade six, my classmates crushed up Rockets and tried snorting them. I chickened out. But later a friend and I crushed more up and sprinkled it on top of our orange juice.

Now imagine doing that with Smarties. The Canadian version. :/

Sil

hahahahahah

Cameron B.

I remember people snorting Pixie Stix when I was younger… :P

drank 1989 Suncha Blend by Butiki Teas
1792 tasting notes

Uh oh, it’s a pu-erh. Thanks for the sample, Stacy! This will be quite the adventure for me since I’m normally not a fan.

Although I’m still not a fan, I’d say it was the best one I’ve had to date (with the exception of Chicago Garden’s Sticky Rice Pu-erh). This smells heavier on the camphor than it actually tastes. Granted, I didn’t steep it for long so that probably played a huge role in that.

It’s something I would never buy but it’s nice to revisit this type of flavour profile to check on my tastes in tea.

drank Lattakoojan Assam by Butiki Teas
1792 tasting notes

Ooh, I love this one. Thanks for the sample, Stacy! It’s a lighter Assam than others I’ve tried, as in, it’s not as bold. A little more delicate. And then this fruity note swoops in and changes things up a bit too. Beautiful!

Such a fool, I am. When I flew over to Alberta to spend time with my mom for a couple months, I brought all of my fruit blends from Janet’s thinking I’d cold brew them all while I’m there. My mom doesn’t have a jug in her new apartment, and we ended up not spending any time at the house (which was the original plan, to pack and organize stuff to eventually sell it) so I ended up bringing back every single gram of these fruit blends to the Island. Only now am I getting to them. I always shake my head whenever I pack something and end up not using it.

So this tea is absolutely beautiful. Golden hues, delicate wispy calendula with generous chunks of tropical fruits. It’s like nothing I’ve seen before. And no hibiscus (which while I don’t mind, can get a little boring after a while)!

It’s awfully yummy, too. I detect mostly pineapple with a hint of papaya. One thing I love about this is that it’s not overly sweet. This is what I wanted David’s Tropicalia to be, which to me, was like drinking pure sugar. There is no weird sweetener going on in this, either. For an extra special treat, I’d imagine Malibu would be amazing in this.

I’ll definitely be purchasing more of this in the future.

Sil

mmmmm pineapple….this sounds delicious!

Fjellrev

Want me to save you some?

Sil

that would be awesome :) i dunno what SB is sending me but i can handle overlap heh

Fjellrev
