24 Tasting Notes
I prefer Nozomi from the same company, but this is also amazing! I haven’t been able to brew it in my Kyusu yet, so that’s worth noting.
It has all the flavor bells and whistles of a Japanese green with a nice unique creamy note, almost like cornbread. Maybe a light milk? Whatever it is, it’s really good and mellow.
Flavors: Kettle Corn, Milky, Umami, Vegetal
Preparation
This is absolutely my favorite herbal tea at the moment. At first I was turned off because I brewed it at boiling. However, when brewed at 85C western or in a Testubin to boiling (I recommend the second option), it’s amazing! The tea has notes of milk chocolate, rich cream, and sunflower seeds. Plus, it’s insanely healthy as a bedtime tea as it’s a good source of L-Theanine and Oleamide.
Flavors: Chocolate, Grass Seed, Irish Cream
Preparation
There’s a reason this tea has won so many awards in its home country. It has a nice umami, marine, rich flavor like many high quality Japanese fukamushichas, but also has some nice undertones of freeze dried strawberries that really ties the tea together!
Flavors: Marine, Seaweed, Strawberry, Umami
Preparation
I brewed this tea Gong Fu as I do for most teas.
Somehow, this ripe pu’erh is better than the Yunnan Sourcing Cozy Pu’erhs, a hard feat to accomplish. The steamed leaves have a typical pu’erh scent with a nice creaminess indicative of a well aged shou (much like the Cozy pu’erhs). The tea liquor itself, however, is insane. It has amazing notes of cocoa, acorn, old DRY wood, and a pleasant creaminess in both flavor and mouthfeel. Whenever I drink this tea, I feel like I am transported to an old Japanese village in the woods.
Flavors: Cocoa, Cream, Nuts, Wood
Preparation
I brewed this tea Gong Fu style as I do with most teas.
Who doesn’t love a cute squirrel? The steamed leaves have a dark woody smell with a touch of sweetness that develops when washed. The tea itself has excellent notes of cream, hardwood, and earth. A perfect example of why I love Yunnan Sourcing so much.
Flavors: Dark Wood, Irish Cream, Wet Earth, Wet Wood
Preparation
I brewed this tea Gong Fu style as I do with most teas.
If you buy this tea to drink and not to age, you are a psychopath. While the steamed leaves have a nice honeysuckle aroma, the tea itself is too astringent to be enjoyed properly. This tea needs 5 years of careful aging AT LEAST to become anything worthwhile.
I am currently aging it, I will review it then. I do have high hopes for it!
Flavors: Astringent, Honeysuckle, Sour, Tannic, Tart
Preparation
I brewed this tea Gong Fu style as I do with most teas.
I cannot recommend this tea enough. The wet leaves have an insane fruit sweet smell; almost like that of a watermelon jolly rancher. As for the flavor, it is very similar except a pleasant floral aspect – almost like peony – is added. It is insanely light and smooth, but not too light that you cannot appreciate the flavors.
Flavors: Candy, Floral, Peony, Sweet, Watermelon
Preparation
I brewed this tea Gong Fu style as I do with most teas.
I’m honestly torn about this tea. The steamed leaves have a nice chestnut, toasty aroma that grows kelpy when washed and these excellent flavors come through in the liquor but not well at all. If the scent is a wagyu beef burger, then the flavor is McDonalds – a muted replica. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this tea.
Flavors: Chestnut, Seaweed, Toasty
