drank Marco Polo by Mariage Frères
985 tasting notes

I have been a good girl lately, and decided to treat myself to a tin of Marco Polo. Thank goodness they carry it at Williams-Sonoma, and I was able to get some without ordering. I have to be quite honest in that I was not wowed. But I think I had this built up in my mind to be the perfect tea for me…..overblown expectations…I could definitely taste the strawberry and fruits, and it had a round and full flavor that was incredibly smooth, and something creamy going on. In the words of my heroine Elizabeth, it was “quite pleasant.”

Now that my initial taste is out of the way (I am sorry Marco, that my expectations were a little out of line!) I will have to try it again for a better read on it. But I am thinking it will take several tins for me to get the full effect. Better start saving my pennies…..

drank Decaf Mango by Adagio Teas
985 tasting notes

I am writing this one in retrospect…..all the way to yesterday! This was my evening tea….and I quite enjoyed it. It is too funny in that I was pretty sure I had Decaf Strawberry rather than Mango, but it was the Mango that was out this morning. I am pretty sure since I thought it was Strawberry, I had probably better stick to that one, and forgo the larger size once my sample is gone. It was definitely pleasant, and probably slightly less sweet than Adagio Decaf Strawberry. I do remember thinking that this was a similar flavor to Marco Polo (which I had my first cup of yesterday) but not quite as full and rounded tasting. Hmmm. Maybe I will need more once my sample is gone…….

On the search for a new breakfast tea. Yes, ever the bargain shopper, I was pretty certain I could replace my $10 for 3 oz. tea since I was not over the moon for it. This is my first breakfast blend sample from Upton.

I like this one, and can see it being the one, but I have to ‘date around’ a little more before I am certain. There is the very slightest hint of smokiness, but it really is perfect. My current breakfast tea smokes a little too much to meet the perfectly steeped bliss quota. Definitely in the running!

I ordered a sample of this because it was quite a bit lower in price than the China Rose Petal I had been buying at another vendor. Normally, I am not too concerned about a little cost difference here and there, but this time we are talking half the cost. Since samples were available, I figured it would be a fun experiment. The chemist in me took over, and I prepared them identically, using the same kettle boil, and duplicate infuser baskets (man, am I thankful for my tendency to overbuy on having two of the same infuser!) The dry leaves are very similar in appearance, down to the color of the petals in the tea. The smells are also comparable. In side by side tastings, they seem incredibly similar. I say seem, because I am not an expert tea taster having only been really into tea since last September.

All in all, I think I have found myself a new source for my rose scented tea. Price often is an indicator of quality, but not always. I am determined to find the exception where I can!

My morning tea. Amazingly, I have given up my morning cup of coffee. Really, I don’t miss it much. As for the Adagio English Breakfast, it is lightly smokey, but still smooth. I don’t think this one will make my all time favorites, but it is good.

drank Lichee Congou by The Tea Table

This was my afternoon cup for the day. It is a little more perfumed than I remember from the sample (I just opened this larger size today.) It brewed up to a pretty pleasing slightly sweet-tart cup. Overall, I am pleased.

4 bags in a 6 cup teapot filled to 3/4….added ice after a 5 minute steep. And then put it into my pretty glass pitcher. Good for iced, but I am pretty sure I will not repurchase once this tin is gone.

drank Boston by Harney & Sons

My morning cup for the day. The base is rich and full, just like I would expect in a Harney tea. The cranberry definitely smells heavier than it tastes. I take mine sweetened.

My evening tea of the day. This one has a light apricot/honey taste and is quite relaxing a pleasant. Definitely high on my list of decafs.

My motto: Drink the good tea!

Tea enthusiast, trying to keep up my cardio for the zombie apocalypse. I have come to accept that I am a western brewing black tea drinker as that is where my ‘tea heart’ lies. I started on loose leaf as a way to have my dessert and not suffer the caloric issues. Once I tried it, I was hooked.

I drink what I like, which is mostly China blacks, a few traditionally scented blacks and Earl Greys, plus a flavored tea here and there. I don’t mind spending a bit on premium varieties on occasion, but an expensive tea has to deliver. My favorite places to order are Harney & Sons and Upton Tea Imports. TeaVivre is great for Chinese tea.

My ratings are pretty subjective. If it falls under 70, I may not take the time to post about it unless I had something specific to say. If it is 70-80 I like it, but I will probably not rebuy. Favorites are over 80 and up, but sometimes the less expensive or more easily obtainable version of a similar taste will win out for my cupboard space.

Usual teapot steeping method: 24 oz teapot, 3 perfect scoops of tea (4 1/2 actual tsp), freshly boiled water, 4 minutes. Lightly sweetened.

Usual mug steeping method: 15 oz mug, 1.5 perfect scoops of tea (just over 2 actual tsp), freshly boiled water, 4 minutes. Lightly sweetened.

Usual pan method: 1 1/2 cups water, 2 perfect tsp chai (3 actual tsp). Simmer for 3 minutes. Add 2/3 cup skim milk. Simmer for 2 more minutes. Strain and sweeten.

Usual pitcher method:
5 or 6 Perfect Spoons of tea (this means about 7-9 actual tsp), freshly boiled water, brewed essentially double-strong in my 24 oz teapot for 4 minutes. Fill my Fiestaware Disc pitcher (about 60 oz.) halfway with ice. Add brewed double-strong tea to the pitcher. Stir it a little and enjoy. No additions.

(*SRP is my Sample/Stash Reduction Plan starting on April 12, 2012. I got so far, but just decided it was too fussy to keep track.)
