Thanks to Brenden at Whispering Pines for this free sample with my order that came in the other day.

Dry and steeped, this smells like something my Dad used to call, “Hot Lemon Drink,” which is what we made each other when sick in my childhood: lemon juice muddled with honey, add some hot water, and voila! Hot Lemon Drink. As I’ve gotten older, I add ginger tea to this mix and whiskey, to make my own Hot Toddy. Usually whips my cold into shape in no time.

This smells so much like that drink, it’s blowing my mind a bit. Syrupy gingerness. I’m so excited to try this!

Again however, I’m worried my proportions are off. My bag says 1 tsp/cup, however on Steepster it says 1/2 tbsp/cup. I went with 1 tsp only because the bag is what I was looking at when I popped it all into the Breville. Well, it tastes lovely, if a tiny bit weak.. and I’m okay with that.

It’s subtly orange sweet with a hint of ginger kick (more ginger flavor than bite), with some tartness thrown in for good measure. I keep on smelling it, amazed at how great it is. Yes, I will definitely be ordering more of this; I will it will now replace my other (generic) ginger tea that I’ve used for years in my Hot Toddy mix. The only thing that’s throwing me a bit is the tartness of the blend, however it’s smoothed out nicely with a touch of sweetener.

I drink hot lemonade even when I’m not sick. :) It’s always best when my mom mixes it up for me tho. This tea sounds really interesting.

MissB

Aw, I love that. :) Parents always add something special. I’ll save you some of this tea, if you’d like – the sample size is more than enough for a few more cups.

JustJames

if it makes you happy your portioning is spot on…. by the way, did you hear that OMGsrsly’s tea may be going on strike? =0P

MissB

Heh. Yes. OMGsrsly and I may just have to meet so I can witness said strike…

OMGsrsly

I think you’re spreading rumours, James… (goes and consoles all the tea in the cupboard)

JustJames

(delicately extracts OMGsrsly from the tea because shoving is rude) poor tea. you are all lovely and shiny. (whispers conspiratorially to the shiny blends….) i bet your owner would believe me if i was captain reynolds from firefly. maybe i’m just not convincing when I say Shiny. =0(

4/5 (see my bio for more info on my new pared down scale)

Been drinking a lot of this cold steeped as it’s, you know, July. It reminds me a lot of jamaica agua fresca/Jamaican sorrel, the same pretty hibiscus tea color with some tartness, with the added dimension of warmth the ginger brings. Very refreshing and satisfying, aptly named as it feels more like a summer ade than tea per se, though there is a wonderful, subtle tea element (it’s a tisane though, so I’m not exactly sure where it comes from…warm spices perhaps?) that sets it apart. Betting my husband will dig it a lot when he tries it.

As a bonus, it’s very easy going to ice; I think it’d be hard to over steep it. I just stick it in a big mason jar in the fridge and strain it off glass by glass, topping off the jar as needed, and it’s always good. Can definitely see it becoming a summer iced tea staple.

I got a small amount of this in my latest order, I have not tried it yet, but your review made me excited to do so soon.
I had not thought of trying it coldbrewed, will have to do that too;)

ifjuly

yeah! apparently popular consensus on steepster is hibiscus=bad because people tend to like sweet over tart, so i should warn, i often like tartness (though strangely, not in hot tea). but if you’ve had jamaica/jamaican sorrel before and like it, then yeah this should be no problem! hope you enjoy it!

Hesper June

I have not had Jamaican Sorrel before (that I am aware of) But, I did know that there was hibiscus in this blend.
I do not mind a bit of tart now and than.
I actually got it more for health reasons, I always try to have a ginger tea around, it really helps with intestinal issues and a few other things.
Which is why I had not tried it yet, because I suppose I was just thinking of it as more of a tea to try when I have a tummy ache.
I do not mind hibiscus. I do not like it in everything, but I certainly don’t mind it in some of my herbal blends:)
But, I think this would be quite refreshing cold brewed.
I love ginger:)

Whispering Pines Tea Company

I don’t like hibiscus AT ALL…so, I spend a lot of time creating hibiscus teas that I enjoy so that the people that don’t like hibiscus can enjoy them too ;) There is an art to blending with hibiscus, and everything I sell that has hibiscus in it took me months to develop :)

Whispering Pines Tea Company

My favorite way to drink this tea is to steep for 5 minutes and then put it in the fridge. You can also use 1tsp for 16oz of water and steep for 15 minutes to save tea.

ifjuly

Whispering Pines, you can definitely tell how much care you took in putting together this blend! I know what you mean about hibiscus being tricky. But when it’s done right it’s so refreshing, yum.

And Hesper June, I love ginger too, so so much! You won’t be disappointed in that regard at all—the ginger is really nice here, with some fire but never harsh.

Thank you for the sample, MissB!

This tea is a hibiscusy mess. I knew it would be going in (and it’s only a mess because it’s not my favourite flavour). The ginger shines through in flavour and heat. The orange is discernible. I suppose the elderberries add sweetness, but I needed honey. Wow, did I ever.

I looked up the tea on their website rather than flipping the package over for steeping instructions. 1/2 tbsp for 5 min, OK I can do that. I had just over 1 tbsp in the bag for a big 16 oz mug. And then after I added the water and put down the packet, I noticed it said “1 tsp per cup”. So yeah. Let that be a lesson or something.

If you like hibiscus and ginger, this could be for you. It would be fantastic iced, for sure. I might do that with the second steep. Sadly it’s just not for me. The ginger is amazing, but the hibiscus is just too much for me without a spoonful of honey, and I’m trying to avoid that. :)
