Gunpowder tea, traditionally made using green tea, is named for the fact that its visual appearance resembles that of gunpowder. The tea leaves are specially selected for quality, size, and style so that they can be rolled into very small, tight pellets. Temple of Heaven Gunpowder (also called Pinhead) comes from the Zhejiang province of China and is the highest grade gunpowder available. The leaves for this tea are only plucked during April and May when the quality of the green leaf is at its highest. The leaves are then steamed and tightly rolled in a time-honored process. Gunpowder tea keeps for much longer than other green teas and is favored because of this characteristic.

while making a delicious breakfast this morning of cheesy scrambled eggs and potatoes i decided i would try my new wonderful green tea from the Tea Table. i got this as a sample with my last order and i love it. its a smooth earthy-ish green tea with a lovely golden yellow liquor. when i brewed it this morning i did a quick rinse and then a 30 second steep. i then re-steeped it several more times adding about 15 seconds each time. i felt the more i re-steeped it the more a a soothing smooth texture the liquor had. this is a wonderful tea especially in the morning for those who dont like black teas.
I was excited to receive this as a sample with my order from The Tea Table. I had never had gunpowder green tea before, so this was a new experience. The dry leaves smelled slightly vegetal and smoky. I brewed the tea using 1 teaspoon for a 16oz mug using 205 degree water (per the instructions). I was tentative to use such hot water since I typically use 165 for 45 seconds for most greens. The wet leaves smell like tobacco, which is very off-putting for me (I just won’t smell them next time). The tea is a light yellow-green color and smells lightly vegetal. The flavor is very light and sweet. After thinking about it for a while, I feel like it tasted “yeasty” which isn’t necessarily bad, I just can’t find another flavor to describe it! It definitely doesn’t have the same “seaweed” or “steamed green bean” flavor that other green teas have. There’s a slightly smoky element to it. Overall, there’s nothing to make me say “wow” about this tea, but there’s nothing wrong with it either and I’m looking forward to the next cup.
