My mother went out of town to take an injured baby bunny to a wildlife vet (my sister’s cat got to it) and she stopped at a natural food store there and bought a few different RoT cans; mostly bagged as that is what they had available (it’s not a really big store).
I took samples of each to try myself, this being one of them. Not sure about the honeysuckle flavor, it’s kind of unusual. I don’t know if it’s the flavor alone or how it blends with the white tea that bothers me. The first few sips were alright, but the more I drink, the more the strange hay-sweet flavor seems to build up and offend my taste buds.
Backlogging
I’ve enjoyed the Guava Pineapple white tea from Republic of Tea, so I decided to to pick some of this up and give it a try. I bought it a few months ago and I remember not being impressed when I tried it. So, I decided to pick it back up and see if there are any changes.
Unfortunately, no there weren’t any changes from tea or my palate. At first sniff the tea has a honey scent and a slight floral scent with hay underneath. But there is a very odd sour scent that is very off-putting. My best guess is that it’s the additional flavoring that was added to the tea.
Upon steeping it still has that odd sour scent, but there is still the other notes of hay, honey, and floral. Tasting reveals the same. There is a nice honey mouthfeel to this tea, hay notes underlying with some hint of a floral note. I could taste the paper of the teabag too. But there is still that sourness that seems to overlay everything no matter what.
It’s still a drinkable tea, but not one I’d get again. I passed it off to my sister who loves flavored white teas and doesn’t mind teabags as much as I do. She thought it smelled delicious when I opened it for her, so she’s already off to a better start than I am.

It really does taste like honeysuckle-in hay, that is. I couldn’t help but think of early autumn and the first afternoon chills when I drank this. It has a sweet, thick smoothness that put me to sleep despite its spark of caffeine. I might pick this up in fall if I can’t find a better organic loose white to stash.

I was only able to microwave the water to tepid and we were at the tail end of our sugar supply. I’m deliberately not rating this one, because it turned out so strangely and I’m not sure if it’s my fault or a characteristic of the tea itself. It’s very faint, with a slight hint of straw. For the most part I’m just tasting the microwaved water. Next school year an electric kettle just has to be on my school supply list!
The honeysuckle on our road just bloomed yesterday. I love it. The scent reminds me of sweetened jasmine. I love white tea as well. I can’t imagine the combination being anything but fabulous. Then again I have never had a RoT that overly impressed me. Their bags tend to contain about half the tea needed for a cup and what little dust there is can’t overcome the paper bag. I may pick up a tin just to see.
The honeysuckle on my back fence is also blooming, & probably all over the neighborhood, as the air is thick with it’s sweetness, which I don’t mind. Sadly, the air is also thick with tree, grass (especially), & now weed pollens.
@K S: It really wasn’t bad for a tea bag, I don’t think. It’s just the honeysuckle white tea blend that doesn’t work for me personally. My mother was smelling in the tin all last night in pure bliss (don’t know if she’s brewed any yet though), so it might be just fine for you.
