Earl Grey Creme

Slow morning. It looks like this week will be more normal since I’m not sick anymore, nor the husband. Though, the weird thing is that my husband’s work contract ended, and during his downtime, he’s farting around the house. Maybe this be a good time to teach him how to make me a good cup of tea?

I haven’t had a good Earl Grey in awhile and I found myself craving it this morning. I took a chance on some bagged earl grey on the ship and it was disgustingly bitter and flat citrus. Yum, luckily I have good earl grey at home! I like the creamy and the smooth black tea base. No flat or bitter at all! Since I voted 2 weeks ago already, there’s nothing to do today prior to hunkering down for the results tonight with some Chai and All-American Hot Dogs. I cleaned house just in case my choice for President doesn’t win and I’m glum tomorrow. (Hope that doesn’t happen!)

Everybody in my family is voting for different people and issues. I must have raised my children right because they think for themselves and allow discussion of issues without any character attacks. One is further left, one further right and me, I suppose I’m moderately…not going to tell!

Now that I have a clean house, it’s time for tea!

Dhart1214 sent me a lot of little sample packs from The Persimmon Tree and I’m almost through the bundle.
I was in the MOOD for some Earl. The day is bright and sunny. I’ve had all the windows open, airing out my condo with a fresh Fall breeze.
Now, with a light vanilla candle lit on the kitchen counter, and a cup of Earl Grey, I can sit and relax.

This tea was sweet without adding any additional sweetening. The French Vanilla was tasty and the Bergamot oil fragrant with a pleasing citrus briskness. There wasn’t any acidity, but a smooth, creaminess that made the cup enjoyable.
Some Earl Grey’s don’t hold up to additions very well but this one does. I added half & half and additional sweetening which is the way I like my Earl Grey.

The Persimmon Tree tea’s have been hit and miss. This one is pretty good.

Ahh, Earl Grey Cream, one of my absolute favorite teas. I’ve been thinking about that thread—the “if you could only drink one tea for the rest of your life, what would it be?” one… and EGC might be it for me. That or a nice brisk assam, or bao zhong. Okay so I could never choose one, BUT Earl Grey Cremes are near the very top of the list. I have tried a ton of them, but mysteriously this one slipped through my fingers even though I have tasted a ton from The Persimmon Tree. So how does it stack up against the myriad of other EGCs?

Well, it’s impossible to go wrong here really. Earl Grey + Vanilla? This one, though, is one of the creamiest I’ve had. Well, not creamy, but vanilla-y. Often the flavor comes out as just plain cream, but here it’s distinctly nice vanilla—not boring vanilla extract, but actual whole bean vanilla. It’s very complex and gives the tea an almost pudding-like dimension with milk and sugar (which I used on my first steep). Rich, decadent, very dessert-like. Towards the end of the cup I’m reminded of a vanilla cupcake with lemon zest in the batter, or I guess bergamot zest if that’s a thing you could actually bake with.

While the bergamot isn’t in the forefront in the first steep, it comes out loud and strong in the second one and the vanilla smooths out even more. It’s less prominent, but still distinctly an EGC—just with more bergamot than most, which is good because many go light on the bergamot and super heavy on the cream. Here I think they’re nicely balanced, and I definitely have enough to try my favorite EGC method, cold brewing! Thanks to The Persimmon Tree for this sample, it’s divine!

The aroma is lovely. It’s creamy and has nice flavor to it. I think I like earl grey with vanilla and cream flavors rather than earl grey alone. It adds an extra little something. Thanks again!

Earl Grey cremes are my favorite type of EG. This was from a sample order that came in a few days ago. I put it in my tumbler as I was going out the door this morning with a bit of honey and milk. Creamy and delish. The bergamot comes through as well as the vanilla but the vanilla presents to me more as general sweetness. I usually keep Teavana’s EG creme because theirs smells so intoxicatingly well, and compared in smell profile this was less odorous (I did also have a smaller quantity).

This was the first tea that I tried out of the set of tins I won in Persimmon Tree’s Facebook contest. It was really, really good! I love Earl Grey, so I have tried a lot of them. This one was nice and strong, which I love. But the strength wasn’t from bergamot, it was from the base and the cream taste. The bergamot was there, but it was really nicely balanced. The cream flavor was almost a caramel. The wet leaves smelled great too. Now I’m looking forward to trying the other ones.
