From Teapigs

Full ingredient list: green tea, toasted rice.

This tea has flourished from humble beginnings – Japanese peasants used to mix green tea with toasted rice to make it go further. Now, a celebrated tea in its own right – popcorn tea (or genmaicha tea to use its official name) is a truly unique blend with a wonderfully nutty undertone. Perfect for those who have always longed for savory sugar puffs!

I was totally unaware of what this tea was, until I looked it up :). I like it – but would not go crazy over it. It does have the roasted flavor which is nice. Overall, okay tea, I think if you like this kind, you would like this version.

Please do not that i may have inadvertently exposed the tea by keepin it in the provided plastic bag that was frayed for over a week.
Light golden brown, lighter than the mao feng. Very light green tea nose too and abundantly toasted rice smelling. The initial flavor is of toasted rice, sweet! Followed by a very light green tea flavor with subtle body. There is a lingering taste that’s grassy and a touch astringent.

Ive had a more balanced genmaicha with a $0.20 tea. This one unfortunately is too light for me. I prefer the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf genmaicha for the price

Sipdown!! (185)

Try all the genmaichas!! This one isn’t bad. The rice is toasty and flavorful which makes for a nice cup. Right at the end, the green base, which is sorta vegetal slips in to remind you it is there. Definitely a nice take genmaicha. Thank you Nattie for the chance to try this tea!

Recently sipped down, and now back in my cupboard thanks to my aunt and uncle! They bought me four Teapigs teas for Christmas, of which this was one.

The instructions on the packaging say to brew at boiling, but I ignored that and went for 80 as I have grown less fond of green teas recently, and higher temperatures usually lead to unwanted astringency. For the second time tonight, lowering the temperature of a tea was a good call! The popped rice is the focus of the flavour this way, with the mellow green tea present mainly in the background. And I don’t mind it! My mam, who actively dislikes the majority of my teas, agreed to try this after smelling it and even seemed open to me leaving her a couple of bags! Big success. I think this was my favourite way having this tea too, and I will likely follow these steeping parameters in the future.

80-85 is normally my preference for these teas, particularly for Teapigs greens. It really brings out the best in them :-)

Nattie

That’s what I’m going to stick to, too. (:
