From teabento

Happy Panda is an non-smoked hand-picked First Flush Lapsang Souchong from Tongmuguan Village in the Wu Yi Mountains. The small reddish-black dry leaves have a warm, biscuity and floral aroma with tones of cereals and dried fruits. The infusion produces a silky, smooth mouthfeel with a rich, deep “oaky” flavour and underlying scents of dried plum and orange peel, followed by a delicious malty-sweet aftertaste. A must try for all black tea lovers!

This sample was graciously provided by TeaBento. This is the first time I’ve had unsmoked Lapsang, and I’m very much enjoying it! It’s a delicate black tea and reminds me of biscuits with honey. I’ve been happily sipping it while reading my book and it’s very soothing, with light honey and malty notes. A hint of earthiness rounds out the tea nicely.

Unsmoked lapsang! I might have to look at this one next time I make an order from there!

Smoked Lapsang is what got me into trying the unsmoked Zheng Shan Xiao Zhongs and now I cannot drink the smokey again. Consider yourself warned and proceed at your peril.

Happy Panda is not making me happy. Unsmoked Lapsang is one of my favorite styles of black tea. I don’t like this one. It’s just flat. No chocolate, no malt, a tiny bit of fruit. This is just black tea, boring, uninteresting. My least favorite of the teabento blacks I’ve tried so far. That’s disappointing – I should love this one and I don’t…. sad panda….

hmm, I seem to recall that steepster peeps were quite happy with one of the teabento pandas and not so much with the other one. This must be the sad panda one then. I can’t comment as I don’t think I’ve tried either one yet.

Too bad, because unsmoked Lapsang when it is good, can be stellar.

Hope your tea day gets better.

Yes, I love unsmoked Lapsangs! This LS is deep woodsy, orange, creamy, and malty. It reminds me of a chocolate orange. It does get dry and bitter in the later infusions. I got 7 reinfusions.

Are you gonna try the oolongs? I’ve been curious, but I am on the fence.

Oolong Owl

I have 5 of their oolongs. A review will be coming eventually.

Another sample graciously provided by Teabento. This one is easy to enjoy. It reminds me of a quality “red” or Dian Hong style black tea. Very smooth, malty taste that lingers pleasantly.

My first cup was the initial rinse prepared at the suggested 1-minute, 205° pre-boil which produced a deep golden liquor. The second time around I jumped off the suggested trail and went a full 3-minutes. The resulting cup was darker, but still a beautiful golden-red, and the flavor was significantly more intense. Still smoothly malty, and the stone fruit in the aftertaste was much more pronounced.

Overall a very nice tea for black tea fans – but if you think everything called Lapsang Souchong is smoky…think again.

Flavors: Malt, Plum, Stonefruit

What-Cha’s unsmoked Lapsang is one of the best I’ve had personally.

#adventageddon Day Fourteen – 2/6

Gongfu! I’m deeply treasuring my advent from teabento right now because it’s really been my only source for Gongfu sessions/straight teas this month, aside from a few off days where I got in some extra non-advent teas.

Today’s session also featured a brand new teacup from Bitterleaf Teas, as well as some yummy sticky toffee pudding flavoured cheese! Dessert cheeses really are the best. The tea is full bodied, with prominent and more savory notes of pine wood, smoke, malt, and black currant which really nicely offsets the sweetness of the decadent toffee, raisin, and caramelized nut notes of this cheese, while still complimenting it so nicely!!

noms. Another sample from teabento (thanks again!). This is a non smokey lapsang for those who are interested in trying it. There’s a fruity aroma to this one but the taste is largely malty, smooth and delicious. I had some spicy food while drinking this one, so more to come next time i have this one heh
