From Taiwan Tea Crafts

This is possibly the easiest black tea to drink in our selection. It is very distinctive and unique in taste and, might we add, rare! It is made from a wild tea strain indegenous to Taiwan called: Shan Cha (mountain tea). There’s nothing bold or brash about this tea, we are not in the same category as powerful assams. This is a subtle charming tea, yet extremely satisfying, with a good body and with surprising stamina! The taster will be greeted with a pleasant aroma of baked oats with buttered sweetness and a discreet floral note of wild rose will charm the nose as soon as the leaves are heated by the boiling water. The liqueur is all smoothness with a very light refreshing tartness. The taste is all pleasant and round with evocations of pastries and baked sweets with fruit compote notes similar to japanese white peaches. This year’s offering (2013) also proposes an intriguing yet subtle spicy character that hints on anise and cinnamon. What surprises the palate is the inviting suppleness of this tea that makes you want to drink cup after cup after cup. If black is not your usual cup, this is the tea that will convert you! This is a must try tea!

After trying a few new teas that weren’t hitting the mark, I made this. This is such a delicious fall afternoon tea. There is something about it that reminds me of pumpkin pie. I also need to grab one of those “I love leaf hopper” magnets, because I seriously do. Such good little hoppers.

Soy sauce – that’s what the dry leaves smell like (not as pronounced after the leaves are steeped). While I’m on the subject of the leaves, they are very large and hand rolled (barely fit in the 100ml gaiwan when dry). Quite interesting how the dry leaves speak soy sauce, yet the liquid is more gingerbread. The cup is very tasty with its thick, savory and very sweet broth. Deliciousness in every sip!

While this may not be the most resilient Taiwanese black tea I have had it is certainly delicious. I got 5 delicious steeps (45*2, 50, 70,90s) out of it before the flavour started to fade into citrus spice and I got bored.

The dry tea smelled of rye bread, longan and flowers.

Brewed the tea released a scent that included sharp longan, and citrus note and hints of black currant, malt, sweet floral with spice and at time croissants, waffles, and bread.

The flavour included notes of sweet floral nectar with hints of clover spice, sweet fruit notes with hints of bosc pear, cherry, longan, citrus notes, and currant, honey, malt and faint cocoa underneath, cinnamon, waffles, croissant, fresh yeasty bread and mineral notes. The earlier steeps were thick and creamy whereas the last couple were drying in the mouth.

All together a very pleasant tea. Thanks TastyBrew for sharing a cup or two with me!

I used the rest of the sample from Cavocorax to make this morning’s cup. I was worried it was overleafed but as I continue to sip, I find it rather flat and flavorless. Every now and then I get notes of cocoa and a touch of fruit but really there isn’t much more going on in the mug. Oh well. It was fun to try so thank you Cavocorax but this one is not a sad goodbye. 171.

Oh dear, this tea is delicious. So fruity and flavorful. Must buy.

Light colored liquor, not a super potent tea, but still bursting with tastiness.

Yay, another sample from Sil! I am happy to try all of these TTC teas since Taiwanese black teas are a little hit or miss for me. They can’t be too fruity, which is weird to me, but there it is. I didn’t quite know how to steep this one so I dumped about half my sample in the cup (long, squiggly leaves always making things interesting) and tried out these parameters first… will likely try others with the next half.

This tea certainly smells very fruity. Apricot, perhaps, with a hint of whatever that note is that I dislike in Taiwanese black teas (hard to describe). A bit honeyed as well. I would say this cup is a little under brewed. I think I would go hotter and also possibly longer. The flavor in the main part of the sip is thin, but there is a lot in the aftertaste. This does remind me of Butiki’s Taiwanese Wild Mountain Black but it’s been so long since I’ve had that one that it’s hard to remember exactly. I am happy to say that the note that I tend to dislike has smoothed itself out in the flavor, and the honey and pastry notes make themselves a bit more known. As it cools the cup gains a smooth, almost creamy texture that is quite pleasant.

Overall this is definitely an enjoyable tea, although it edges toward the side of Taiwanese blacks that I’m not in love with, or at least I would never really crave. But obviously a very nice example of the type if you are into those sorts of things.

Ahhh, the joys of being a temp. That is, not knowing what the heck you’re doing from one week to the next, but assuming you’ll probably be working at least half the time? This week, it’s Engineering Science. Oughtta be fun!

Also, having lost my trusted crochet hook, I caved and bought a new one today. I expect that this means that my old one will turn up by Wednesday at the latest. That’s the law of these things. Now I can make more tea cozies!

Good Gosh, I do like this tea! It’s got the same sugared pumpkin/treacle/sweet soy flavours I got out of it before, but is that a hint of cinnamon I get too this time? Mind you, it’s only there about a third of the time, oddly. It’s a mysterious wee beastie. The second steep is lighter-bodied but still full of flavour – is that even an oddly ephemeral whisper of pipe tobacco I’m getting? Yeah, I continue to approve of this.

15019 tasting notes

Sipdown! Yay! Not that it really counts since I’ve purchased tea while on a vacation but at least it will be one less to a) bring all the way ack home and b) sipdown to try and make my goal when I DO get home.

My other half and I have settled in to a great routine in the evening here….we cook dinner, sit on the balcony, play a game, go down to the whirlpool and then either play another game or watch a tv show before bed. I’m really going to miss our evenings here when we get home so we’ll have to see if we can find a way to keep it up on week nights I don’t have to work heh

I feel like I’ve had this tea way more often than I’ve logged it. It’s a tea that is similar in profile to Stacy’s wild mountain tea….though different enough that the two are unique teas. I’m not sure how often I’d restock this as I’m partial to the sun moon lake Assam if I have to choose just one, but I’d be happy enoug rotating sample sizes of the lots in to my cupboard from time to time, esp with free shipping on those at 25$

Final count: 138 (however there are teas to be purchased here and teas probably waiting for me at home…)

So far, all the Taiwanese teas I have tried seem to have that distinctive spice note both in taste and aroma. I’m not really sure what it is, but it is very unique, aromatic and flavourful.

This is fragrant, fruity and spicy, but also smooth and creamy with notes of honey, and somehow savory as well. Seems bolder and more full bodied in a way, than the TTC golden dragon tippy black tea I had earlier, but both are similar to me. Delicious!
