After my disappointing visit of the Dammann Frères shop, I was so frustrated that I decided to visit the nearest Mariage Frères shop (not a big walk…450 meters ! )

My 10 years daughter was with me and she saw a beautiful canister(Sakura 2012 green tea), she sniffed the blend and she absolutely wanted me to buy it…but it was 22 € and didn’t want to spend so much just for the canister…So to replace I took the Sakura 2000 which is available in loose leaf.

Prepared it yesterday night and I had no problems to sleep behind (theine level shouldn’t be too high)

Well I just need to say it’s a wonderful tea :

the smell is a wonderful bouquet of cherry blossom
there is absolutely no astringency with the liquor, the first sip is highly floral and sweet.
the after taste is clearly fruity with a delicious sweet cherry.

You keep the taste a long time after finishing it, it is delightful.

I highly recommend to discover it.

love Sakuras, something so soothing about cherry blossom flavour and tea! Votre fille a beaucoup de goût, mais un peu dispendieux cependant! :-)

Ysaurella

it was my first Sakura and I am very happy she “forced” me to buy it, thanks god I found this 2000 edition at 8 €/100 gr. Oui elle déjà un petit côté parisienne snob :)

darby

I’m SO jealous that you can walk to the Mariage Frères shop!

TheTeaFairy

Darby, that’s exactly what I was thinking! I just wish I was a «snob parisienne», widow shopping my tea in Paris!

Ysaurella

I know ! but you have David Teas I don’t :)
Look, they are opening a new corner in London (just a little bit nearer from the US) :http://style.selfridges.com/whats-in/mariage-freres-opens-first-uk-concession-selfridges-london

Mélissa

(Unrelated but I can’t wait to place a huge holiday order at Mariage Frères. Every post about them just adds to the excitement.)

Your daughter has wonderful taste, my compliments! And thank you for sharing. Just had a cup and trying to write something about it, but it is beautiful indeed – reminded me a bit of Vert de Provence while being pretty different, but the base, the tea body, how sublime the perfume is.

Risking the danger of hopeless cultural stereotyping ( pardon aux français pour ce que se suive), wow, french and scents, they really get how to make things smell sublime. Mariage Fréres particularly included in that – I swear I would buy Vert de Provence to wear as perfume and this is another tea I would just buy and wear as perfume. It smells indeed sublime – some sweet green tea underneath, a bit of fruity cherry, and something floral and wonderful. I would call it roses, tea roses (no relation to tea actually) since I do not know what sakura smells like but it would make sense if it was sakura.

A warning, consider that I am in a mood where I do not seem to really love flavoured green teeas and this is of course a flavoured green. Despite that this of course, evidently wonderful. Cherry blossom green tea was one of the first flavoured teas I liked, and it has became ubiquitous companies now seem to have a take on it. The last few blends I have had of it have been quite bad, so much so they left me with a bias that no, I do not like green tea with cherry after all and have been avoiding it ever since. Trust Mariage Fréres to do sakura tea right and remind me how awesome the idea really is.

Brewed up around 80C and for maybe 3 minutes. It was a very very smooth base with a strong note of red fruits (the cherry) and a very strong rose-like floral note. Lovely.

I never exceed 80°C for this blend and leave it steep for 4 max.
Well as a French I prefer hearing we are good at making perfumes rather than we are moaning all the time or arrogant :)
I am happy you liked it (even if you’re not in love with)

cteresa

I am not sure i am able to be in love with a flavoured green right now. Or a new green tea, I seem to have an exception for a couple of my staple green teas. Dunno, just my mood I guess – OTOH I think I have finally fallen in love with white tea and am learning to love oolongs, so not all bad.

This reminded me so much of Vert de Provence, maybe a similar base, the sublime perfume blends.

Oh and did you notice with sakura that as the tea cools it becames more and more floral? Just out of steeping you get the fruit oh so strong. But I was sipping from my cup and it was cooling noticeably (December, sigh. And in Portugal central heating is for wimps, or hotels or hospitals), as it cooled the flowers became more and more dominant. So interesting!

Ysaurella

I sipped this one so quickly I never had a chance to wait to try it cooler !
But you know I visited Lisbon in december…12°c…it wasn’t cold for a froggie ! today we had -3°C in the early morning in Paris ;)

cteresa

Yesterday has been pretty warm, and I think it is going to be warm indeed for the next week or so, say 10 to 16 usually. But when temperatures are around 4 or 5 and it´s very foggy and humid from the atlantic I would take your paris -3 in an instant. Specially with non heated houses and the damp gets to the cold! The russians and ukrainians complain often of the cold which is sort of funny poor things (non heated houses are just different) and the old joke is that portuguese emmigrants to France and Switzerland and so on do not come to Portugal in Christmas break because it is too cold, LOL.

A light and flavoured green tea which is one of my favorites! Easy to drink it may also be appreciated by tea haters! One of Mariage Freres best selling reference.
J’ai récemment fait un post sur mon site à ce sujet http://www.monarmoireathe.com/2014/01/test-the-vert-parfume-sakura2000-mariagefreres.html

Ysaurella

this tea is absolutely delicious even for me who isn’t a huge fan of greens. Agree on the fact it potentially can really be appreciated by tea haters

All you tea companies, if you put out a sakura flavored tea, I will buy it.

This one was ok for me. I prefer a greener sencha tea base. The green tea base was just okay. I was interested in their variation of sakura blossom flavored tea. It’s such a distinctive flavor, it’s hard to get right. I had no problem drinking through the 100g I got. It was lovely iced and hot.

A sample from Ysaurella, and the second tea I’ve tried from the MF selection she sent me. I used the parameters she recommended — 4 minutes at 80 degrees. The resulting liquor is yellow-green, and surprisingly smooth. 4 minutes is a longer brew time than I’d typically give a green tea, so I was expecting some bitterness or astringency. Interestingly, there’s neither.

The main flavour that comes out is cherry; sweet, floral, almost syrupy cherry. The biggest fruity-floral hit comes mid-sip, before it tails off and the mildly vegetal green tea base makes its presence known. It’s on the edge of bitterness right at the end of the sip, to my tastes, but it hasn’t tipped over. I think next time I may nudge the brew time down a little to 3.5 minutes, just to see how that works out.

The scent is beautiful, thought. Cherry blossom through and through! It’s such a spring-like, happy smelling tea! It’s impossible to inhale, take a sip, and not smile. Another MF I’d consider purchasing when I make my long-planned pilgrimage to France.

This sencha sakura smells disgustingly sweet—not only is it flavored/scented by cherry blossoms, but the recipe uses quite a bit of cherry oil as well. It smells almost like Dimetapp, a children’s cold syrup. And it tastes like it, too. There is no subtlety to the flavor. The smell overpowers and delivers the same medicinal taste. I can hardly taste the Sencha, because the cherry overpowers so much.

I must admit, I do not usually like fruity/scented teas (other than jasmines), so if you do like strong scents/fruity flavors, this tea may be for you. However, I have had sencha sakuras that are scented/flavored with cherry blossoms alone, and they were much more tasty and subtle in flavor. The cherry just enhanced the sencha—rather than taking over the entire experience as it does in this tea.
