From Kurihara Tea Farm (Yunomi)

For the outdoor lovers out there, this camp style tea may be for you! How do you bring your Japanese tea with you when you go on outdoor trips? While of course, there is the option to bring small packets of tea leaves with you, this powdered tea may be another way. Yes, you can enjoy Yame gyokuro tea in the mountains!

Nationally recognized, award winning gyokuro tea farmer Akio Kurihara is also a fan of camping and trekking, so he created single serving powdered gyokuro and sencha (!) in order to easily enjoy Japanese tea while being in nature. In fact, Kurihara-san hopes that his customers will be able to refresh themselves with this tea amidst magnificent scenery during outdoor activities such as backpacking and rock climbing. He notes that because Japanese green tea consists of theanine, it has relaxation effects which may help one to destress and sleep well amidst nature. On the other hand, please note that even though we suggest enjoying tea indoors with an actual teapot (kyusu) and tea leaves, this powdered tea may also be perfect for those of you who want to enjoy Yame tea at work.

I can never resist a gyokuro, so once I figured out what this was in the TTB I was super excited to give it a try. Leaning into the camp/travel theme, I made this for a long drive we had over the weekend. I settled on a plastic travel bottle – safer than glass, less likely to impart a taste than metal. Unfortunately, I had trouble getting the powder to dissolve in room-temperature water. Stirring with a spoon was minimally effective, and even after using my trusty milk frother there was some silt at the bottom of the bottle. I kept shaking the bottle as we drove/as I drank, but never really got rid of ALL of the sediment/small clumps. But that happens with powdered teas, so ::shrug:: Much weirder is that this absolutely smelled and tasted like steamed broccoli. Savory, umami, no astringency, vegetal, but very very specifically like steamed broccoli. It’s not something I would necessarily seek out but was intrigued to have tried.

A very pleasant surprise. The powder is very smooth and blends perfectly for someone on the go. I did blend it as one would matcha as I was curious and it frothed up nicely! The liquor is a nice color and the powder stays suspended quite well. The flavor is perfect. Nice, round umami with no silt and barely any astringency. There is a pleasant, slightly grassy after taste as well.
