Milord's Grey

I started tasting this and quickly decided to read the Steepster reviews. This is NOT typical earl grey so don’t let the name confuse you. This is highly caramel and with the strong black base it comes off as kind of burnt caramel. Very nice. The fruity flavors stay way behind and add support to the cup. Like. Thanks Nicole.

When I went online a few weeks ago to order a few Kally Tea’s, I had trouble with ordering off the website so I made a call and ordered over the phone. I have to say that the 30 minutes or more chatting with the owner was a fun time. He lives in the ‘High Desert’ in California and is passionate about his tea. I hope to see Kally next year at the Boulder Tea Festival!

I notice when smaller companies attempt interesting blends using real fruits, flowers, nuts and natural flavoring. When I can afford to, I give them a try and support their effort.

This Earl Grey was a pick for me because of the flowers, caramel and apples. I don’t drink much EG…so this combination sounded interesting and delicious.
The package recommended a 3 minute steep, but after steeping my tea for that amount of time, I would hold back a bit to 2.5 minutes if you plan to add cream and sugar. A 2 minute steep would be enough for plain tea.

Wheee this was bold. In fact, I had to add cream and sugar because the tea was almost bitter it was so strong.
There was the Earl Grey bergamot flavor which you look for and a hint of caramel apple. Instead of those flavors taking over and hiding the Earl Grey, those flavors are enhancements in the background.
Why even buy an Earl Grey then cover it up!

This tea has a nice flavor but you need to cut down the steep time. When I have this again, I’ll make any adjustments to my steeping and the rating.

Enough here for three tea bags by the looks of it so I can brew a teapot this morning of this for me and my husband. He loves when I get the teapot out.

This tea whilst raw is dark brown in colour and amongst it I can spot large whole purple flowers, some dried apple pieces and a few tiny blue cornflower petals. It’s nice to see that each ingredient listed can be seen easily in the tea itself.

Once brewed the tea has become a light almost reddish brown in colour with a sweet and floral finish, smelling very much like your classic Earl Grey.

Side note – I will be having a drop of milk in my tea but no sweetener.

The taste is very pleasing and it was a nice surprise. At first sips it tastes like your average Earl Grey and it bears some strength but then a sweet and fruity apple tang comes into the after taste and it’s finished with a subtle floralness. It really does go well together, better than I thought it would when I read the ingredients.

The more I drink the sweeter it becomes thanks to the apple, so much so that if I added my own sweetener it would be too sweet. The drop of milk has also made this a very smooth and creamy blend which is perfect for me in the morning.

It’s a shame that Kally Tea doesn’t ship to the UK because I would have liked some more of this. :(

Basically replace your stereotypical bold bergamot in an EG with a subtle Apple and Caramel here and that’s what you have! It’s in a class all of it’s own, really. It’s a nice flavored Black. It’s creative! It’s a bit floral but more so on the end sip on to the aftertaste. It’s memorable!

LOVE! This is the second tea from Kally that I’ve tried, and I love it! I’m really loving this company.

This is a beautiful twist on the classic Earl Grey. The bergamot is subtle, and mingles well with the hint of apple and caramel in this blend. The floral tones stand out at the start, but subside as I continue to sip, with the caramel and apple tones becoming more apparent as I make my way toward the bottom of the cup… sigh this cup disappeared way too fast!

This one goes on my shopping list, because I need MORE!

I notice the caramel right off. No distinct apple taste to me, but there is a slight hint of sweet that might come from the apple. The bergamot is very light in this, almost to the point that I’m not sure I’d call this a “grey.” It’s very nice, though. One of the better caramel teas I’ve had.

The brew is a lovely deep mahogany color but be careful not to let it steep too long and in fact, you might want to go on the short side. This does get bitter quickly.

Slight hint of sweet, possibly from the apples.

Another interesting Earl Grey variation. I’ve had the Earl Grey with lavender and the Earl Grey with citrus but I haven’t had Earl Grey with apple, calendula, and caramel. It’s interesting, I like the apple flavor and the caramel but I’m not a fan of the calendula, I think it’s giving it a waxy taste. Also I love Earl Grey and I’m losing the bergamot to these other flavors, it’s pretty much a flavored black tea now. Not bad but not my thing.

This is my favorite creamy Earl Grey. It’s a stronger tea than most cream EG’s use, and it has more bergamot flavor. The blend fits together perfectly. I love it with milk and sugar. And the scent of this tea is wonderful, I can sit sniffing it for hours.

While I was traveling I ended up cold steeping this in my travel mug before I went to bed each night. Like magic I woke up to a great cup of cold tea each morning, it was heaven! It tasted heavily of vanilla, with hints of bergamot— the exact opposite of how it tastes when I steep it according to the package directions. I think I prefer this cold steeped since it doesn’t dry my mouth out as much, but either way it’s a delicious tea.

Sipdown! I grabbed this because it was an earl grey, and yet this doesn’t taste much like an earl grey at all. It’s more like a breakfast tea with a sweet burnt sugar/apple aftertaste. It’s actually kind of watery, and I’m having trouble thinking of it as an EG at all. It’s fine, but I don’t think I’d reach for it again.
