I have been drinking a lot of this tea, cold steeped and sweetened with homemade simple syrup. I am logging it today because I tried something a little different. Instead of plain simple syrup, I made a lavender infused syrup to sweeten this. (Lavender is also really good in Tulsi.)

The syrup tastes a lot like Chowan’s Lavender candies or Parma Violets. Added to the strawberry and lemon flavors of Lady Londonderry, it made a really foofy, girly glass of iced tea to go with lunch. I have been craving sodas because it is so hot outside, so I am using cold steeped tea to beat those cravings.

If you don’t like lavender, you wouldn’t like this syrup at all. But if you can handle the floral taste, it is nice switch up for summer tea. I am really enjoying this one cold steeped. I wonder how a vanilla syrup would taste in it? Next experiment!

Other food experimenting is taking place today. I made home made ketchup, and for the first batch I decided to experiment and use malt vinegar in place of white vinegar, and added Penzey’s chili powder and made a few other little changes. It was really good with hamburger meat – more or less it was a sloppy joe. Next up will be actual plain ketchup.

JacquelineM

Yum to all of the above!

ashmanra

The ketchup didn’t smell like ketchup at first, and really didn’t smell appetizing to me, but after it simmers it is wonderful! I love being able to control how thick it is, how sweet, how tangy, etc.

OMGsrsly

Ooh, I think I’ll head into the kitchen and make a lavender simple syrup. I bet that would be good in my evening chamomile tea as well! I’ve made some tea flavoured simple syrups, and they’re so good with club soda or other sparkly water. :)

ashmanra

That sounds great! How did you make the tea flavored ones? I have only done cherry and lavender.

OMGsrsly

I followed these parameters. :) I only made half a batch, though. I just don’t go through it fast enough. http://www.silkroadteastore.com/recipes/canton-orange-syrup-tea-recipe/

ashmanra

Thank you, thank you! Love the link! Do you have any special tea blends or certain flavors that you feel work best?

OMGsrsly

Anything you like iced, really! I’ve used some herbal teas, fruit teas, and Royal Abkhazi. I’m thinking of trying La La Lemon and a blood orange tea. :)

ashmanra

Great! Thanks!

JacquelineM

Earl Grey Tea Soda come to mama! Thanks for the tea syrup recipe, OMGsrsly!

ashmanra

I thought of you, Jacqueline! I still don’t have my Primo but maybe I had better get on the ball!

Ahahahaha! Fair enough! Is this kind of an earl grey? And $14/pound is crazy cheap, my brain tells me. Lucky you love it :)

Azzrian

Nope no bergamot at all! Just a lovely fruity floral tea that is AMAZING! :)

Emilie

I made a cup of this a while back, but spilled it all before I got to try it at all. You’ve made me want to go try it now!

Azzrian

Emille it is so wonderful truly you should get more – I mean for the price its astounding! So sad about the spillage :(

Violet

Not for trade buddies………I won’t say anything then. ;-)

Azzrian

LOL I was kidding girl – I have a good sized bag of this if you want some I will put some in your next box. Double check that I didn’t already send some though I usually include it in trades if I remember to do so because I love it so much and want others to try it :)

Azzrian

Oh and I made that note before I bought a big bag of it :)

Kittenna

Ooh, after the above discussion I have now tacked this tea onto the list of ‘teas I want to try from Azzrian’! :D

Azzrian

It is good stuff! Start a list woman!

Kittenna

Let me assure you the list was already in existence :D

I’ve finally added a large portion of this to my stash! Drinking it with some milk & sugar while hanging out with my kitty. He keeps sticking his nose in it, I guess it smells good to cats too! It is so so delicious, one of my favorite everyday teas. Up there with Paris for sure! Thanks so much to Azzrian for introducing me to this awesome tea.

Azzrian

Yay! I love this stuff glad you do too!

CupofTree

Even our kitties have good taste :)
Mine got a little too frisky though because one day I noticed one of my sample bags with some flavored tea in it had little kitty bite marks on it! Had to transfer the tea to a tin and now I dont leave any sample bags of tea out anymore haha

Alphakitty

Mine seem to love flowery teas—they go nutso over jasmine and try to chew on the leaves. It’s pretty cute, but I try to keep them away from the bags haha

Thank you Azzrian! I can see why you love this!!

This tea…I don’t know how to explain it properly, really. I highly enjoyed this tea. But there were some complications, I guess you could say. I’ll explain in my tasting note, so don’t worry.

Smell: Dry, in the bag. It had a floral aroma, with a hint of something citrus. Reading over the ingredients/tea description, it mentioned strawberry and lemon, so that makes sense. It’s a nice scent, and not too strong. Dainty, light, sweet. :-) Steeping it was about the same, though I find that steeping for most of my teas always kind of mutes the scent. It’s not bad, it’s just how it is. The color was nice, too, a dark reddish brown.

Taste: This is where I faced problems. It was REALLY GOOD! It was!! But I can’t really find the words to describe what I was tasting. One of the tea descriptors was “malty” and I don’t think I know what that tastes like yet. It also had a floral, sweet taste too it, which was nice, and that citrusy/fruity taste, but I couldn’t place the tastes. It was very yummy despite not being able to properly describe it, and I am very pleased with it. I’m glad I have enough for several cups, which also means a little bit of experimenting, but not TOO much! Oh, just because I always put how I make it: two packets of sugar in the raw. I think next time I may try a bit of cream. Don’t know though.

I also steeped this in a mug, like my other tea, but it turned out better because this mug held about 8 oz, and I properly filled it. So no diluting for today! :-)

wow this sounds incredible!! it’s not an earl is it?

Violet

No, it’s just a floral, citrusy tea. I don’t think it is black, either, because it’s got a very dark reddish brown color. I need to check the tea description again….

The above link has a video about it too! I love that english tea store does videos for their teas :)

Azzrian

Violet you were right about the malty flavor! Its subtle though.

Violet

That video was awesome! I loved how he gave several ways to make it, i.e: milk, or no milk. Lemon if you want to bring out a bit more of the lemon flavor, what to eat with it, etc. I really did love the tea, and can’t wait to try out the other ideas! (Especially trying it with milk!)

Another Sipdown (299), this one came from Alpha Kitty, thanks, wherever you are!

Admittedly, this one doesn’t really work for me too much. It’s a little astringent, the strawberry flavor is in front & a little on the tart under-ripe side.
NEXT!

ashmanra

Cold steeped and sweetened it can be pretty awesome! But I admit you have to get everything just right. When I do, it tastes phenomenal.

Azzrian was awesome and sent me a bit of this! Thanks so much!!!

Dry – this smelled a little citrusy but also a little like loganberries or currants.

Wet – this smelled more like an herbal-lemon.

It has a deep-rich red/brown color to it that is very vibrant and lovely.

It’s a nice medium strength SWEETER type black tea taste on the tongue. It does have a mouth-watering citrus-berry combo that is almost like a sweet and/or fruity wine-type tingle on your tongue!

Thumbs up! Thanks again Azzrian!

ashmanra

I love this one and would love to send it to my daughter’s boyfriend, but it’s name would actually be considered quite insulting and provoking where he lives! I will probably order some for me, though!

Azzrian

Glad you enjoyed! Wish I could have sent more but was very generous in other trades and now need to re-order more of this! This is one of my household staples for sure. Always a lovely cup!
Ashmanra – I am curious to know more about why this would be insulting. Educate me please? :)

ashmanra

The Loyalists, who are primarily Protestant, call the city Londonderry. The Republicans, who are primarily Catholic, call the city Derry. The city is divided and the Catholics (bf) live on the other side of barbed wire. It was the site of Bloody Sunday years ago. Nearly everyone of all faiths want everyone to just get along, it is really based on politics and not religion, but there is a handful on each side who are more radical and sometimes violent. When my daughter is there, she and the whole family stay in on certain days because of parades that will lead to “trouble.” Several times in the past two years she has been close to a bomb going off or a riot. They introduce her, “This is The American, she is Protestant!” glowingly, because they are not prejudiced. I laughed and told them we are non-denominational, not Protestant, but they said there are only two things – Catholic, and not Catholic! I once called the city Derry to an Irishman I met here at the beach, and right away he wanted to know why I called the city that, and when I explained he told me that he knew all he needed to know about her BF. The Irish man was, by the way, married to a Brit, and told me that as soon as they ran “her lot” out of the country it would be united again. They both laughed!

ashmanra

Oh, and this tea is EXACTLY the flavor profile he loves, which is why I am thinking about buying it, shipping it to me, and repackaging it with another name on it! He wouldn’t mind the name….much…I think…but I just wouldn’t want to wound anyone!

Azzrian

I am SO sorry I never got back to this post. Thank you for explaining all of that! I love learning.
:)

Azzrian

So I have read over this more in depth. So this is based on a city in London specifically? What about people in other cities in England? Do they just not care? I would like to introduce this to someone I will be seeing in St. Louis next week who is from Manchester – am I safe? LOL
Well I would talk to your daughter about this and ask her if it is okay to send him some even if you changed the name what if he asked where he could get it or what it is called? You could end up having to tell anyway!
Great story too! Thank you for sharing that.

Thanks to Azzrian for a sample of this tea!

Unfortunately, we had another case of flavourless tea this morning… Again, I swear I didn’t underleaf, but the result doesn’t taste like much (except there’s some astringency with this one). I really don’t know what I did wrong. Luckily, I have enough of this to try and fix my obvious mistake(s)! Putting this in the travel mug may have been mistake #1…

You know …. this could just be too old babe. It may not be fresh enough this was one of the first teas I got when I first started drinking tea 9 months or more ago and I know I sent it to you ages ago as well.

Kittenna

It is possible, although I have older teas from you that still are just fine. I suspect that the remaining flavour was too weak to hold up in the travel mug, so I will try it next time steeped normally!

Sipdown tea #3!
Finished my sample of this. I really liked the flavors in this one.

Rob Rauschenberg

I like that one too. I steeped it a 2nd time and put in the fridge and it was really good cold too.

KallieBoo!

Ooo this one would be a good one iced.

Rob Rauschenberg

Its nice if you use the 2nd steeping because its not as strong and works well cold too. I’ve been trying to make the most use out of my tea.

KallieBoo!

That’s good though! I try to but I always forget about resteeping the leaves after I dump them.

This one intrigued me with the promise of berries, citrus, and florals, so I asked for some in my last swap with Alphakitty and she was kind enough to send me some!

To me, the leaf looked suspisciously like a black green blend, but no one has mentioned this at all, so I thought I was probably just hallucinating something. I went ahead and brewed it boiling, and most of the leaves in the infuser appear black, though I will say there are a few greenish-tinged ones that are intriguing.

Nontheless, the resulting tea isn’t bitter or scorched like a green might be when steeped at that temp, so I guess everything is ok. This tea is super duper berry-licious. It is berry to the max. I can’t really pick out a specific berry, necessarily, but it’s definitely berry. Maybe some black currant, yeah. It’s honestly perhaps a bit too much berry for me, and I would like it if the berry might step back a bit and let someone else have a bit of the spotlight. Because there are other flavors, playing in the background. A bit of bright citrus, for sure, and a hint of florals. Not really that floral, just a bit of orchid somewhere in there. Anyway, it’s a pretty tasty tea but it’s a little too in-my-face with the flavoring and I’m not quite feeling that this morning.

I think the berry flavor on this one is strawberry, it’s very strong!

This sample came to me by way of Azzrian – thank you very much!

The dry leaves smell quite good – I smell berries!

I brewed up 8 ounces of water and poured over a teaspoon and a half of leaves. Tasting the tea liquor its just a tad bitter for me, so I end up adding a little rock sugar. It mellows out the bite a bit and brings the lemon and berry taste forward. I can see why this is a favorite of Azzrian’s. Thanks for passing a tasting along! :)

I bet this would be tasty as an iced tea!
